How to get the dewy face look when you're late 50s and rather wrinkly

Currently use some powder on a brush which is doing me know favours, but am clueless as to what else to use.

Guidance, please, wise ones.

I'm not 50s but wrinkles are appearing! I use bb cream and some under-eye concealer, a blush stick and a highlighter which I think gives me a bit more of a glow than powder. But I'll be watching with interest for any better advice as I'm currently massively sleep deprived and look like an extra from the walking dead!

I use; Benefit Benetint lip and cheek colour and CHANEL VITALUMIÈRe. I also use a touch of concealer, lip balm and occasionally a bronzer.

Also;Mac Lustre Drops.

Good luck Flowers

Try a regular facial! They do dewy things. Dermalogica is a great range!

HI Wendy,

I'm in my 50s and get told I look years younger - so I must be doing something right. I haven't used powder for donkey's years.

Get your favourite moisturiser and mix it 70/30 with your favourite foundation. You can mix and store it in an old make up pot (or even a tupperware kitchen container) - anything with a lid. You can of course buy tinted moisturisers, but I have never been able to get on with them - found them too drying - lots of tint but not much moisture!! By using the products I like and mixing them myself, I get much better results.

Use that as your make up base and don't use powder - the worst thing possible as
you get older as it sits in the wrinkles.

Leave the moisturiser/foundation mixture on your face for a good 10 minutes before applying any eye make up, blusher, lipstick etc. and instead of powder, just use a bit of loo paper or kitchen roll to blot up any excess moisture. Then proceed with your usual make up routine.

If you want an extra 'glowing' look, just use a big brush and waft a bit of highlighter sparingly over brow bones, cheek bones etc.

Mineral powder makes everyone look like Miss Havisham, ime.

Ditch that and you'll look infinitely younger, instantly.

Don't use Touche Eclat under your eyes - it's really drying. The No. 7 version is way better.

Number 7 Stay Perfect foundation is a good balance between getting rid of shine and looking like a statue, I've found.

Nars Orgasm is a good blusher, if used sparingly, particularly for evening.

timemaychangeme · 05/04/2016 19:36

Mid 50's here. I've found primer (I use Benefit Porefessional) and foundation applied with a damp beauty blender has helped to get a less mask-like appearance. I'm very pale and have found the most flattering blusher for me is Benefit Dandelion Powder. As Fontella says, a sweep of highlighter along your browbone will add a subtle glow

I used to use mineral foundation but mid-40's it just started looking grim instead of glowy. I would maybe try lancome counter as they do a lot of flattering foundations, and ask for some testers of whatever they think is the best foundation for you. I've stopped buying new stuff until I've tried a few days of tester at home. Too expensive to keep buying it only to find it's not right.

If you use eye liner steer clear of black as it's v ageing. Dark brown is better, I've found.

Lipstick - depending on your colouring - a pinky/peach with a bit of a gloss is good. I use a clear lip lining pencil to get a sharp outline as my lips are starting to 'blur' a little.

For eyeshadow I've stopped using anything even slightly sparkly and stick to matte as otherwise it seems to highlight any lines.

WendyWithers · 05/04/2016 19:42

Thanks so much for your ideas - will certainly try the moisturiser / foundation mix and get some samples from the Lancome counter.

Make sure you prepare your skin well before using foundation/BB cream etc. So regular exfoliation, drink lots of water, eat lots of fish and or take fish/krill oil supplements. Also try using a primer before your foundation. I use a bare minerals one but there are loads out there and you may need to try a few before finding one that works well for you.

Fontella · 05/04/2016 20:06

timemaychangeme is spot on about anything sparkly. Stick to matt.

This is the golden rule once you pass a certain age!

I'm a graphic designer who does a lot of photo editing. One of my clients is a photographer who specialises in 'glamour' shoots and I get sent the photos to do the final Photoshop edit. It's high-end stuff, nothing tacky and all very tasteful, but often features older ladies. She employs a (so-called) professional make up artist and I despair sometimes at the images I am expected to work on. Sparkly eye shadow that sits in every crease (and which is almost impossible to edit out) - lip liner that is drawn so far outside the lip edge that it makes them look like pantomime dames. I swear I could do a better job myself.

OP, if you go on youtube - there are lots of videos of older ladies going through their make up routine. Some are better than others, but it is certainly worth watching and you can pick up some useful tips.

cream blush
Highlighter - ask your fave make up brand, the Kevin Aucoin candle lights is good
chanel vitalumiere if you have dry skin/

LostMyBaubles · 05/04/2016 23:14

Im a make up artist and fontella kinda hit the nail on the head kinda thing.
Its an amazing way to get the dewy look. Dont over do the ratio though as it could make you look more oily thay dewy.

And a good cheap highlighter that I use o myself everyday is by a brand called mua cosmetics it's the undressed skin highlighter a white one iridescent gold I think its called. Its amazing. Just above cheekbones and under the brows inner corner of eyes and lil over the brows and cupids bow on the lips

elephantoverthehill · 05/04/2016 23:34

Place marking to have a proper read tomorrow. I really like the idea of mixing foundation and moisturiser. I have always had really dry skin and never really got on with foundation even with moisturiser underneath, or indeed 'moisturising foundation creams. BB, CC and DD creams make my face feel puckered.

JackandDiane · 06/04/2016 10:31

I didn't use powder for years. Then found that it keeps my dewy foundation set. If avoid powder blush. I get loads of compliments on my make up specially since I used the highlighter

specialsubject · 06/04/2016 11:50

remove specs, look in mirror. Job done. Or photoshop.

you aren't 12. Isn't it great?

BestBeforeDate · 06/04/2016 12:02

Grin special subject . I have no problem being in my 60's but I DO want to make the best of myself and I'm grateful for some of these tips.

specialsubject · 06/04/2016 13:48

as long as you realise that nothing (except surgery) removes wrinkles or gives a youthful skin texture, no matter how french the name, how posh the packaging or how expensive the sleb endorsement.

it is all lies.

the best of yourself is clean, tidy and smiling.

elephantoverthehill · 06/04/2016 17:13

Baubles could you post a pic of the highlighter you use? I went to look for it in Superdrug as they sell MUA but couldn't see it for the life of me. Many thanks.

Floisme · 06/04/2016 18:48

Nothing will bring the dewiness back. Once it's gone, it's gone. But yes to mixing foundation and moisturiser/sunscreen, And a tiny, tiny bit of vaseline along my cheekbones just to highlight them. No to anything powdery or glittery. I like a lipstick too these days if I could only learn how to put it on.

elephantoverthehill · 06/04/2016 19:31

Thank you. I tried the moisturiser and foundation trick today and was really impressed. I have also bought some primer. I have never been a make up person, but have always moisturised my skin daily but I think it is time my face could do with a bit more help Grin

Annarose2014 · 06/04/2016 19:36

Am I the only one who mixes a blob of luminizer in with their moisturiser?

I have Mac Strobe Cream but the L'Oreal Lumi one is exactly the same. Makes you look alive!
