PEARS!!! What do you wear on holiday? never found a pair of shorts that fit!

I've just booked our summer holiday - it's in 3 months time and I am currently 3 stone overweight Sad

I've never found a pair of shorts that fits me - I have HUGH thighs!

What do other pear shaped women wear on holiday? Has anyone found the holy grail of perfect shorts?

I wear short light skits or tunics with knee-length leggings. So long as the top covers your bum the leggings can be quite thin. And if you have enough pairs you don't need to wear pants.

busyboysmum · 06/04/2016 20:39

I'm on holiday at the moment and am a size 14 pear.

In my wardrobe are several pretty dresses and cardigans. Also maxi skirts and fitted t shirts. And lightweight Capri pants in navy and white with floaty tunic tops.

Potterwolfie · 06/04/2016 20:41

talkmedown I wear really lightweight flesh coloured cycling short length undies underneath maxi skirts and dresses (until recently we lived in place with 100+ temps) and they worked really well...will try and find a link. I'm not overweight but really, really perspire a LOT in hot weather!

TalkMeDownPlease · 06/04/2016 20:47

Potter thank you! I would love a link if you can find one. Had a quick google but there's so much choice and range of prices.

TalkMeDownPlease · 06/04/2016 20:49

OP sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread!

ThornyBird · 06/04/2016 20:53

TalkMe I have some Sloggi long knickers/shorts. They are high waisted and go to just above the knee - tan is what I tend to go for as I can wear them under anything.

Snoopydo · 06/04/2016 20:56

Slim pear shape here. I look awful in shorts and would never wear them in this country.

Even though my legs are not great I have two pairs of shorts that would look passable on holiday if I was tanned - a very short navy smartish pair which go with anything and a pair of board shorts I could wear on the beach. I think short shorts look better on pear shapes.

Behooven · 06/04/2016 22:47

Next have some lovely linen dresses, above knee length so ideal for the heat with microfibre boy short pants underneath.

Sonotkylie · 07/04/2016 09:07

Try shorts a size larger and shorter than you think. I am an hourglassy size 12, so I wear size 14, 4 or 5 inch inside leg shorts. The temptation is to go for knee length and they just emphasise the thigh, giving that lovely scout master look.
But I agree, skirts and dresses and cropped trousers can look much better anyway. Although sometimes, only shorts do it!

Potterwolfie · 07/04/2016 09:32

Hi talkmedown I can't do links on here but if you search Amazon for Sloggi women's basic long brief, they might be what you're looking for.

MrsPear · 07/04/2016 09:49

Nope don't do shorts. I am around 10 on top and 12/14 bottom. I wear a line skirts with fitted t shirts, cotton dresses and 3/4 trousers with kaftans for beach.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 07/04/2016 10:00

I also cannot wear shorts. They just look ridiculous on me (big thighs, wide hips, small waist)
I mainly wear A line skirts with a vest top, or I have a few H&M jersey wrap dresses that they sold a few years ago for £2 or something stupid like that! I bought one in every colour Grin
I do also have a couple of pairs of cropped trousers/jeans that are OK but verging into frump territory. Also a really nice loose pair of linen jeans (also H&M) that I roll up but I've lost weight since I bougt them and they are now a bit big Sad

RhombusRiley · 07/04/2016 10:13

Yes! I'm a tall, size 14 pear and have always found this. I'll happily display my big thighs and knees in a swimsuit, and it all looks fine and in proportion but there's something about shorts, any shorts, that makes me look like benny hill at scout camp.

On holiday somewhere hot I wear floaty maxi skirts or dresses, or sometimes knee-length dresses, with a fitted top half. If it's not that hot, cropped or wideleg jeans with a fitted top half also works.

twentiethcenturybitch · 07/04/2016 10:22

In agreement with the consensus that shorts just don't work for us pears. I bought a combat style and material, knee length black skirt years and years ago from bench. Back then (skinny and pre kids) it sat low on the hips, these days (considerably less skinny) it sits higher but miraculously holds in the tummy and still looks a good length. And all the pockets/zips make it just as functional and casual as holiday shorts. It's like the holy grail of holiday skirts. No idea if they still do it (purchased ca 2005) but there must be similar out there.

AuntieMaggie · 07/04/2016 10:51

I bought a few pairs of jersey shorts in Sainsburys last year a couple of sizes bigger but I tend to only wear them by the pool/on the beach as they ride up if i'm walking around in them!

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 07/04/2016 10:55

Haha! Benny Hill at scout camp is exactly right! Not a great look...

Bryt · 07/04/2016 11:00

I am a pair shape with larger upper thighs. I don't wear shorts on holiday to walk around the town but I do wear shorts on the way to the pool or the beach or in my garden. The ones that I can get away with are NEXT linen ones (I'm not sure if they still make them) and a wonderful pair of chambray ones I bought at a Monsoon at an airport in desperation. The Monsoon ones have two front pleats in them which give a more flattering fit over my thighs. I don't wear stretchy t-shirts with shorts though. I draw attention away from the thigh area with a longer, floatier top like a sleeveless blouse or gypsy top.

Bryt · 07/04/2016 11:00

pear shape not pair shape

sweetheart · 07/04/2016 11:22

I wish I looked as good as Benny Hill at scout camp in a pair of shorts!!! Blush

Whilst looking for something else entirely I just stumbled upon the fact that H&M do those sloggi type things - cheaper than other places I've seen - no idea if any good though here

OP posts:
EarlyInTheMourning · 07/04/2016 12:03

The H&M ones are not cotton so that could be a problem for many. The Sloggi ones are 95% cotton and they're excellent. I am a size 10 though so I find it annoying the smallest size they do is 12, but it is better than nothing.

vitaminC · 07/04/2016 12:34

I'm tallish (5'7") and a very hourglass size 12-14 (14" difference between waist and hips) and shorts make me look like I'm wearing a nappy Blush

Give me a short, floaty skirt, any day!

BarbaraofSeville · 07/04/2016 17:25

Well I've been to try on the linen dresses at Next mentioned upthread and unfortunately I don't think they are any good for curvy figures as there is a lot of excess material around the waist if I get one that fits on the hips, which makes it look a bit sack like. I don't know if it would be possible to take them in as there are no zips, which would make getting it on and off difficult.

Shame, as they were in nice material and a good range of colours/patterns

RaisingSteam · 07/04/2016 18:39

You can get those kind of surfer dresses and skirts - Patagonia do them, stretchy but in a beach kind of way here

My shorts are actually a pair of mountain bike shorts from Go outdoors - bit of stretch means they aren't way baggy and are quite a trim fit and they have a toggle to pull them in the waist. maybe these

A lot of it is about getting the top/shorts/shoes proportions right IMO

JohnCheese · 07/04/2016 22:47

I have these and I really like them. Shorts but skim my thighs nicely.
