any advice on what dh (aged 50) should wear for arty interview

Would appreciate any help. DH is 50, a techy art worker. He's been in the same job for 18 years and now having to job search. He's been told smart casual for upcoming interview. But he's an unusual shape. An inverted triangle, fairly short. And we've kind of lost touch. So I'm thinking jacket and dockers/chinos. Any ideas? What kind of jacket? He's distinguished/attractive/young looking facially. Any ideas for a jacket that's a bit arty but doesn't make him look like mutton?

I'm going to bed now but if you have any thoughts in the morning, thank you.

Whatever he wears being well groomed, is always a good thing. Get him to make a hairdressers appointment for the day of / day before the interview. Just for his usual cut. He can look after his hands and nails extra well, also a new razor on interview morning (If he's a shaver) is good.

Can he maybe try on loads of stuff? It's the easiest way.

I work in an arty industry and think this would be a good interview outfit (ignore odd 'running for the bus' pose). I'd avoid jeans, even though jeans may be the usual attire in the office, I think an extra effort should be made for an interview situation.

P.S I say a firm 'nay' to a bomber jacket! Grin

'A bomber jacket? Really? He looks a bit like Ardal O'Hanlan. I need to see pictures.'

Here you go...............

My Dh is arty and in a senior role he wears the Zara black chinos for work they are great for skimming the leg, he has big thighs ! I would then invest in a nice shirt and Jacket, we have a Paul Smith outlet here, or try Cos ?

prettywhiteguitar · 03/04/2016 07:28

Quirky shoes are always good to make a plain outfit more interesting , maybe some brown brogues ?

As long as it's good quality he will look great ! Good luck with the job !

Aye. Forget the bomber jacket! Even not looking like father Ted, it probably looks too preppy.

I like the look posted above. Even DH would be comfortable with that.

I've noticed that all the smart young uns are really channelling the 80s geography teacher look, right down to the particular type of check shirt! There's a lovely menswear shop near us, called Woven. It's hipster paradise, but has some really good quality smart but not banker smart stuff in. No idea whether it's a chain or just a local thing.

blobbityblob · 03/04/2016 09:13

Yes Mitzy, thank you that's perfect I think. And Pretty we'll go to Zara and have a look at the trousers. Sadly we're nowhere near the Woven shop. But a grey tweedy jacket and dark trousers I think would work. Thank you all. He has some nice shirts and brogues. And yes we'll have a look at the grooming. I do hope his interviewer's not reading this. Love the picture of Ardal.

Good example from Mitzy there.

Are the shirts he has reasonably fitted? That's pretty important, tight isn't good but big and billowy is dreadful on most men. Zara and Cos (again) are good for fitted shirts. Maybe also try Massimo Dutti for trousers if the Zara ones aren't right on him.

Post wine I agree about the bomber Blush

Boden usually have a men's suit in cotton drill ( I.e. like chinos) that comes in navy or beige. Sounds like the right sort of thing. Or does he have a linen suit? It's becoming warm enough, and they're smart, but can be less smart v easily. ,( plus, he could re-wear later, for weddings etc).
He's their perfect market age-wise.

guerre · 03/04/2016 10:22

A moleskin jachet is usually nice too, with chinos.
I'm imagining Tom Hollander in the Night Manager BTW, sorry if I'm way off the mark!

ouryve · 03/04/2016 10:50

moleskin is the fabric I was trying to remember last night Blush

What about Banana Republic? this kind of outfit bananarepublic.gap.co.uk/browse/product.do?cid=87883&vid=1&pid=000174762U014-17346

MrsJohnLuther · 03/04/2016 12:22

Dh is a creative director and usually wears jeans/shirt and a jacket like the Zara one lettuce linked to. He has 2 jackets, both bought from an independant menswear shop. One is fairly tweedy (but not like a geography teacher jacket!). I think shirt, jacket and dark trousers will be fine.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 03/04/2016 18:46

If your husband usually wears black jeans then new, smart ones could be perfect. With a shirt and jacket.

Smart causal for an arty job would mean smart jeans are definitely OK.

Ilovetorrentialrain · 03/04/2016 18:47

I hope your husband gets the job by the way, good luck to him!

blobbityblob · 03/04/2016 21:21

Thank you so much. DH has a lovely new outfit. Found a jacket in Whitestuff that just fitted him perfectly. A shirt from TS Lewin and some new Chinos. Went with the colours suggested. The summer stuff seems to be coming in so a lot of linen suits and shiny stuff. But I think we managed to find some nice things, once we had an idea of what to look for. Hopefully it will help. Really appreciate you soending the time to help.
