what shoes to wear with jeans apart from ballet flats? (And where to get them? Size 9/43 foot)

Help me oh style and beauty gurus.

I'm aged mid-fiftes and mainly live in jeans when not at work especially when socialising. Jeans with boots get me through winter but as the weather gets warmer I need another option.

I'm 5'10, don't mind a bit of a heel up to 2 1/2 or 3 inches but want to avoid anything too high (5 inch heel court shoes for example) as I'm already far enough out of the ground. Plus I'm worried there may be a certain "mutton dressed as lamb" element if I go too tall and I also know I develop that knock-kneed bum sticking out walk that doesn't look good.

I also wish to avoid brogues as (personal opinion alert) they look too masculine on me, they look great in smaller sizes on shorter ladies but once you get to a size nine they just look like boats. Apologies in advance to any size 9 brogue wearers out there.

I like ballet flats but they don't give a lot of support so need to find alternatives.

AND can you point me towards shops/suppliers - most of the usual shoe shops still seem to be unaware that any women with feet above a size eight exist. And I am definitely a nine. AND a nine is a 43 in European measurement, not a 42 as New Look and others seem to believe. (I'll stop before a soap box rant develops.)

I realise this is a big ask, nice shoes that don't make my feet look massive, can be bought in high street shops and look good with skinny/straight jeans. And don't make me look like I'm trying to be 18 from the ankles down.

Stealth - know what you mean about the price . Also they remind me of something my mum would have worn in the 1970's although at my age any fashion development reminds me of a previous decade so my fashion-ometer may be awry.

I am a narrow 43 and struggle. I buy from Crispin's in Chiltern St when feeling flush...can even fit into a 42.5 sometimes .
Long Tall Sally have a better range of shoes this season.

Oh I'm mid fifties and six feet tall ...
I avoid brogues as I feel too masculine, as I avoid "feminine" clothes because I resemble Grayson Perry if I do.
I try and go for an Audrey Hepburn cigarette trouser look.

I have size 8 feet but am only 5ft 4" so have to be very careful to avoid the clown feet look, I tend to avoid skinnies for this reason as I think they just accentuate large feet, straight jeans are much more flattering or even a very slim bootcut (close fitting all the way down with just the tiniest flare at the ankle). Simply Be do lots of size 9 shoes.

Savage - am from oooop north, Crispins in Chiltern Street - what city? If they stock size nines on the shelves that you can actually try on it might be worth a visit. I hate wandering in to shops and being told they do go up to 9 but don't actually carry them in the shop as "there's little demand" (of course there's little demand if you don't physically have the damn things!). But of course you can order on line and go back next week to try them on. Which takes the fun and spontaneity out of the shopping experience.

Penny - that's definitely more what I had in mind, I think it's being conscious of having big feet, I worry a block heel adds to that look whereas a slightly undercut heel takes away from it.

Please keep them coming - I am also open to quirky designs and colours if you know of any.

I am a size 9/10 at 35 I struggle with shoes and get annoyed at the lack of trendy styles.
I buy a fair few pairs from hotter shoes-my husband is a podiatrist and that's who he recommends.
I have a lovely pair of brown suede loafer slip ons, really comfy and support the foot really well.

Would people wear those low heeled courts with jeans?

As someone who originally hails from warmer climes, I find that I can wear boots for most of the year. (Ankle boots - I wouldn't wear knee highs over jeans.) For the three months when boots are not needed, flat sandals or trainers of some sort will usually look all right.

I don't do brogues either. They just never look right on me, to my eyes.

Crispin's is in London.. Only sells from size 8.
There's also Magnus and Totally Large shoes in the same Rd ,( and LTSally) so if you're in London it's a road worth visiting.

Clarks are too short for me.

I'm 45 and size 43. I tend to wear brogues, Blundstone boots or Converse with jeans, so I am probably not the best style icon.

Duo, or whatever they are called these days, do a 9 and have a shop in Manchester.

Land's End do a 9 (US11) in a lot of their styles, and they are very good quality shoes. Lots of styles. They are mainly mail order, but have a shop in Rutland I believe.

Apart from Clark's I have pretty much given up on high street shoe shopping, but I have found that White Stuff size 8/42 shoes can be very generous indeed and they often fit me.

It's the utter frumpiness of larger sized shoes which makes me angry. All Velcro and designed to be worn with American tan tights.

Savage- forgot to ask what are Superga that you mentioned? Know what you mean about Grayson Perry, I avoid frilly and floral for the very same reason, nothing shatters the ego faster than overhearing "is that a bloke?" when you walk in somewhere. I've had two successes with Clarkes but know what you mean about too short, they're not overgenerous with width which means the length can suffer.

Sn1ce -I like converse but don't want to go too casual on nights out. Am a funny bugger when it comes to shoes, that which looks cute on smaller people sometimes loses something when translated to size 9

Everybody - know what you mean about clown feet, I have a shameful pair of mock crocs that are only ever worn at home in the garden. With a red nose and honky horn I would be a shoo in for a job with Billy Smart's Circus. How good is the fit from Simply Be? Are they fairly accurate? If online shopping there is such a crushing sense of disappointment when they don't fit and there's the hassle of returns....

Sanity - I know what you mean about sandals, I do go that route when the weather is warm. However it's that time inbetween boot and sandal weather, I suffer with cold feet a lot of the time hence wanting something to bridge the gap.

Next have loads of size 9s, i just order lots and send most back. They have some lovely split point flats at the moment but they probably are too flat- their loafers or mary janes would be better. I wear converse etc like everyone else!

I'm a size 8 and with jeans I wear birkenstock mayari or superga trainers.

On a night out I have some pretty flat sandals in silver.

Superga are a bit like Converse...I like the linen ones. Office sell them or loads of places online

Simply Be : they do different width fittings so sometimes it is a game trying to get just the right fit, also have to watch out for a lot of synthetic materials. There's usually codes knocking about for 20% off/ free delivery etc and they do have some shops now as well as online.

I am very envious of people who have neat feet and can walk into a shoe shop and buy what they actually like as opposed to just buying what fits!
I have to start an outfit from the feet up and consider what shoes to wear before choosing anything else. So frustrating that I've had huge feet since being a teenager and yet shops assume if you have large/ wide feet you are a pensioner.

Savage, ah yes the frumpiness. I dislike those shops that have their shoes shelved per size and you see a lovely one in a six, seven and eight and then the nine section contains the sensible beige flats and not a sniff of the range available in the smaller sizes. I may be in my mid fifties but am not yet ready to give up re looking interesting. I like the look of the Crispins one that you've posted, can't quite nip to London on impulse, do they do online? Will also look up Superga

defineme - Next come closest to my sense of what is stylish, just wish they'd stock my size in the shops. How many size 6 do they need on the shelves fgs. Online is looking like the way to go.

imsorry - Brantano have just closed their branch in my town, the wailing and gnashing of teeth could be heard for some distance.

busy - those pink ones are surprisingly nice, maybe I need to concentrate on strong colour and not worry about heels etc.
