Mine is non-existent. Facecloth and water at night, micellar water and moisturiser in the morning. I exfoliate once in a blue moon, use Clarins Exfoliating Toner now and again. And go through phases of using Lancôme Cream Cleanser but really that's about it.

I'm getting older and had best start giving my skin more time. I've noticed that my foundation sits in patches on my cheeks and seems to absorb into my chin. I've been using Benefit Porefessional. Need to sort the foundation issue but suspect skin condition is the problem.

Can anyone recommend products or where to start please?

Thanks.

I like almond oil too. I don't have any crow's feet and have never used eye cream. I have a few lines on my forehead, probably from raising eyebrows at pupils! I definitely use sunscreen spf50, but usually whatever I have to hand. I have used it for most of my adult life (not spf50, though, as it wasn't around when I was younger) I also don't really go in for sunbathing, so I think that really helps!

Ponymagic · 02/04/2016 13:48

Ancienchateau , can you recommend a Vitamin C and Retinal A serum? I stumbled across Salli Hughes last night and her top serum recommendation was £2.99 from Superdrug - no idea what's in it though!

Ponymagic I buy mine from my dermatologist, it's his own range. It needs to be topical iirc so it might be worth asking at your GP? Or visit a dermatologist/cosmetic clinic and see what they have.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 02/04/2016 14:14

Pony- is that the Superdrug Pure serum? I have that, for moisture.

You can get Vit C serums cheap as chips from ebay/amazon etc. They aren't worth spending a lot of money on as they won't keep if the Vit C is in the right strength to make a difference, as it's apparently a volatile ingredient. (in other words all those bottles of lotions and potions sitting on Boots shelves flaunting themselves as Vit C are probably worthless in skincare terms)

If you have a few months hours to spare, have a read of the Amazing Faces quiche threads from last year. We all got a bit carried away!!

Not many eye creams are recommended as making much of a difference. One I've read good things about and keep meaning to try is Hylamide Sub Q. I have, in the past used Dior, Superdrug, Elemis, Body Shop - all sorts, and tend to agree with the pps who say they don't do much that a moisturiser/serum doesn't do. I currently am trying out a glycolic eye cream from Amazon that a MNer recommended. Was about £8.

If anyone wants to go for facial oils, buy them from Amazon as well, rosehip oil is rosehip oil whether it costs £4 from Amazon or £24 from Trilogy.

Remember there is a difference between Retinol and Retin A. Retin A is the hard stuff that you are supposed to be prescribed. You can also get it from ebay from Vietnam and Thailand, it's perfectly OK (johnson and johnson brand) if you want to go down that route. Lots of creams have retinol in, but the concentration needs to be worth paying the extra £££ for. La Roche Posay redermic is spoken highly of. I just got a tube of that and after 2 days of looking like I've been on a grill plate have decided maybe it's not for me.....

Oh, meant to say, on the Amazing Faces threads, there are recipes for home made serums inc Vit C if you really feel like rolling your sleeves up. Grin

fredabear · 02/04/2016 14:30

45 here and I really like the dior star foundation. Also had the M&S advent calendar and my best product so far from that is the Rodial dragon's blood sculpting gel which is £££ so I'm eeking it out!

One of Sali Hughe's recommendations is the Vichy Aqualia serum which I really like for hydrating. I use Origins never a dull moment cleanser, but do have quite tolerant skin, I don't think it would be good on drier/more sensitive faces.

BennyTheBall · 02/04/2016 14:32

I double cleanse use acid toner and have the odd facial.

I always get asked about my skincare regime. I'd like to say it's because of products, but it's because I have Botox. Grin

Ancienchateau · 02/04/2016 14:36

Ooh yes I've used the vit c serum from SR Skincare as recommended on one of those s&b threads. Really cheap and effective. Lasts up to 3 months I think. Active Formulas is another website worth looking at.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 02/04/2016 14:38

The Superdrug Pure serum is the one which is apparently a cheapo version of Aqualia.

I have just started re-reading the AF threads, and can feel my hand sneaking its way to my credit card again damnit. Grin

fredabear · 02/04/2016 14:42

Might have to investigate Superdrug thenlater - perhaps I can then justify the dragon's blood...Halo Hmm

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 02/04/2016 16:46

Micellar wipes. And 5% benzoyl peroxide gel. That is it.

I feared I was the only 50-ish still using BP gel as a night cream! Grin

cressetmama · 02/04/2016 17:03

A cleansing oil, followed by facecloth, then Bioderma Micellar in the evening. Finish with Bioderma Hydrabio serum. Dermologica special gel cleanser wash in the shower in the morning, more Hydrabio serum. Job done; more products seem to make my skin worse. Biore Watery Essence SPF50 on sunny days in summer/overseas.

CointreauVersial · 02/04/2016 20:21

Fredabear - I just started using the Rodial Dragons Blood from the M&S calendar today! It has left my skin very soft. Do you think it needs a moisturiser on top - I can't work it out.

I liked the Pure grape moisturiser as well, but that's all gone.

fredabear · 02/04/2016 20:29

I use a moisturiser on top, treat it like a serum - not sure that's right, but its working! I have just seen M&S are doing a dragon's blood freebie at the mo...

MorrisZapp · 02/04/2016 20:37

There's a brilliant you tuber called 'hot and flashy' who does loads of videos about skincare and makeup post 50.

Ponymagic · 02/04/2016 23:13

Might have to find a few hours and check out the Amazing Faces threads thenlater, sounds like there is a mine of information contained within them.

Have been shopping today and have come home with the Nip and Fab pads, Dior Star foundation and a nice new Dior blusher. Hope I made the right choice with foundation. I've used Diorskin Nude in the past and was colour matched with 020 shade. Today the machine colour-matched me with the same shade but the assistant thought 022 might be an alternative. It looked awfully pale so I stuck with 020 and she did my full face. It looked super in the store but in daylight I had a real tide-line. I'm hoping it was down to heavy application rather than the wrong shade! I've got a little of the same shade in the Nude foundation so will try that tomorrow before I open the new one.

I'm envious of those of you who have been able to improve skin through dietary changes. I just love chocolate and cakes too much to give them up but really must increase the amount of water I drink. Have spent a lot of time mirror-gazing over the last couple of days and am depressed to see that my skin is definitely starting to sag. I don't mind the crows feet around my eyes and they're not too bad but around my mouth .... it's ageing!!

OP posts:
HormonalHeap · 02/04/2016 23:47

48 and dry skin but it's the recent sagging that gets me. Use Simple cleansing lotion as doesn't irritate my eyes, and Creme de la Mer which deals with the dry skin but not of course the sagging. Yes expensive but dh says he's saving on botox..

I'm not for surgery but my mum has a turkey neck and if mine's heading the same way than yes that's probably the only thing I would have done, as it changes the shape of your face.

We have a friend who's just hit 60 but looks my age with botox, fillers and who knows what else. You can't hold it all together forever, can you?

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 03/04/2016 11:46

Apparently, rumour (and urban myth possibly) has it that Creme de la Mer and Atrixo hand cream Shock are very closely related in formulation. I read that on a MN thread so it must be true! Grin

I definitely look younger than 51 but it's the sagging and the 2 deep lines between nose and mouth that get me. If I could just walk upside down I'd look 25. Maybe I'll look into some facial exercises. A year or so ago a MNer recommended a Roc roller ball thingy, that was being sold off as cheap as chips and we all got one. The cream inside was fairly average, but there was something about the roller ball that definitely seemed to lift saggy bits. Might dig it out and try that again.

Which Nip and Fab did you get Pony?

I need to buy a sunscreen this week- I am in Italy, and really cannot go without. I might order the watery essence that I know the Asian Beauty threads recommend. Either that or the Roche Posay I think.

UhtredRagnorsson · 04/04/2016 19:12

Protect and perfect do an spf 50 BB cream that seems to be ok.

BennyTheBall · 04/04/2016 20:30

One of my sisters went to a talk recently by skin scientists (she works at Cambridge uni).

They totally dismissed Creme de la Mer and its ilk. They said the only cream that has scientific evidence to slow down/improve wrinkles is good old Number 7 Protect & Perfect.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 04/04/2016 20:55

Hmm that gives me tight skin and a rash if If I perservere.
