Time to retire my black leather jacket?

Here I am clearing out my wardrobe again. I just pulled out my biker jacket after it’s latest several year hibernation and am reminiscing about my almost but not quite, and let’s face it mainly aspirational rock chick days in the 90s. Since then, this is a jacket, or at least it’s aspirational offspring (that upped a size as I had babies and the earlier jacket disintegrated with use), that used to come out every so often for a while and retreated every so often. But I’m beginning to wonder if it needs to remain in the wardrobe or in a memory box. I’m in my mid 40s now, greying all over, and thinking I could do with losing a stone, probably more. I love socialising, I love food and drink and I have no will power. But I can do it, I have done it before. And besides I could do with getting a bit fitter too. Perhaps I should consider colouring my rapidly greying, wiry hair, or going back to highlights. I gave up on my hair after my youngest a couple of years ago. It is just so much faff, and I resent spending so much time and money on stupid hair that just grows back. BUT even if I did all of that I don’t think I can carry this lovely little jacket off any more.

I am not glossy, tall or sinewy and nor will I ever be considered “fit”. In a line up I would be more Miriam Margolyes than Kate Moss. (I think both of these epic women are extremely cool, so no shouting at me. Although for the record, Margolyes is obviously cooler.) Then I wondered. If I shed the stone, and maybe the extra bit, and got the hair colour, could I just about carry this leather jacket off? I know it’s impossible for you guys to say without seeing a picture and that is SO not going to happen. I love the feel of this jacket, the reassurance of it and how it reminds me of me. But when i look in the mirror I think I look kind of ridiculous in it now.

Buuuut I don’t see why I should stop dressing as I used to because I have quite noticeably aged over the last 5-10 years. I tried doing a search for threads here on Mumsnet, but it was all “I’m in my 50s but look barely over 35, because of my great genes and because i work out and drink kale.” and all that jazz. There don’t seem to be many saying, like me, that I look older for my age, and will look my age no matter how many workouts or green juices I drink, but I still want to dress as I always have but not look like an idiot. In my case there is a lot of genetics to blame, all my forebears wrinkled and greyed early and profusely. But it seemed to matter less in those times. In photos all the women seemed to be wearing a pinny around their generous waist. The photos look like me. Short, frizzy, a little plump. Happy. But in an apron.

I'm nearly 51.
I've been wearing biker jackets since I was 15. In my younger days I had many genuine bike jackets bought from bike shops. As I got older and moved away from the biker scene I still loved my biker style jackets. I have the fashion versions of them now and my last two were from River Island and I think Whistles (or was it Oasis)
Anyway I'm not giving them up anytime soon.

Sacrilege!
I mean what if Daryl Dixon calls round to take you out on his motorbike?
You'd regret it then.

A middle aged woman in a leather jacket is always going to look more cool than a middle aged woman in Boden. IMO.

Also, there was a great thread on S&B about embracing grey hair a few weeks ago, with lots of pics. It was very interesting.

Sorry for the late return to this thread. Easter break craziness. Thank you, I think I’m in love with all of you right now. (Especially MsBojangles!).

I have been spending too much time posing in front of the mirror.

James May (him from Top Gear. No not him, the other one.) kept staring back at me. But not in a good way.

So I took my black biker jacket off, stroked it, hung it nicely and put it back for my next jacket crisis, or for my daughter in a couple of years. Even if she wants to point and laugh at it. And then I went to [imagine a name of a well known high street supplier of leather jackets] and purchased a suede brown biker that is much more forgiving and that I can barely afford this month, but am trying to justify it through cost per wear. And besides, it looks really, really HOT.

Sod the hair, it would cost the same as the jacket just to colour it for 6 months. And I couldn’t be bothered sitting in a salon for two hours when I could be doing something else instead. Thanks for your input. It was warm, well needed, and very much appreciated.

Mmmirren is a bit of a girl crush of mine. Sadly I could never pull it off like she can. I saw photos today of her with black leather trousers, and totally rocking the grey hair thing. But that is kind of my point. She really is quite exceptional. Hardly anybody can look as effortlessly cool as she can. I couldn't look so effortlessly cool even if I spent three weeks in a starvation/pilates clinic and being lasered and transplanted all over.

It annoys me a bit, much as I like her, because she is put out there as a "Look ladies, you too could look this good at 70!" or "See, women? Newspapers DO feature women over 65 in adverts and newspapers!"

Yes, but it's bloody Helen timelessly beautiful Mirren. Hot international movie star. Not Linda wondering when the hot flushes will ever stop, from Human Resources in Newcastle, or Marie flooring it to get to work after the school run in Glossop.

Awwww I'm so glad you went and got another one that suits you and that you can love here and now Smile

I think Helen Mirren is great, but let's face it, she has the time and money to stay slim and put a lot of effort into her appearance, plus she hasn't had children. If I hadn't had two pregnancies I don't suppose my body would look too different now at forty than it did at twenty, and the same again at 65...
