DP used to have an itchy scalp. He tried everything, (honestly the amount of lotions and potions in the bathroom was crazy)! He now uses VO5 and has lovely soft, itch free hair!

Monkeyfeet12 · 23/03/2016 07:36

I've tried loads, used neutrogena t/gel for 6 weeks, scalps cleared, then went onto moo goo. Scalp lovely. Hair is good first day. I resemble a chip pan on the second. Awful, matted, greasy hair. Hope someone comes along with the answer!

Another Inecto coconut fan. Very cheap in my local chemist so it's a winner all round.

Philip Kingsley Flaky Itchy Scalp shampoo is the best, from M&S. It costs a fortune though.

JapanNextYear · 23/03/2016 07:46

Philip Kingsley as above, worked for me for a while and occasional use of the boots medicated shampoo for dandruff www.boots.com/en/Boots-Anti-Dandruff-Ketoconazole-20-mg-g-Shampoo_865598/

Now using an everything free one from Simple. It's a bugger. Eating well, avoiding alcohol and stress is actually the best for me!

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 23/03/2016 07:47

Moogoo works for me as well. They do a leave-in conditioner which I ust use at the ends.

Teacakequeen · 23/03/2016 07:47

I was just going to say Philip Kingsley ! It is very expensive but it's the only shampoo not to upset my scalp. my hair looks lovely too. The conditioners are excellent too

Indecisivejo · 23/03/2016 07:53

Omg Philip Kingsley made mine worse! Bloody ridiculous

Yes, I have had a bad reaction to Aussie Mega shampoo, it caused breakout out contact dermatitis (excema type rash) on backs of my hands, forehead, around nose and mouth and back of neck. Very itchy and inflamed with raised bumps. I think it might be because it contains methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. There are warnings about these chemicals on the web. I have been treating the rash with emollients and it is gradually improving. I used to suffer with excema as a child so I guess My skin sensitive to such things.

Sunshineandwaves · 26/01/2019 17:05

Yep. Methylisothiazolinone. Nasty stuff. I'm very allergic to it.

yongnian · 26/01/2019 18:33

My itchy scalp is down to seborrhoeic dermatitis and so only medicated shampoo on prescription helps. (I also get it round my ears and forehead and eyelids, even eyebrows if it’s particularly bad).
When it’s under control with a selenium sulphide-based shampoo I can throw in a low-sulphate ordinary shampoo now again.
For those on this thread with similar, might be worth asking GP as it really can be so miserable to live with, I find.

Pyotrkrolik · 26/01/2019 18:33

I thought it was just me who couldn’t use the Aussie range but it seems I’m far from alone . It made my hair full and bouncy but my scalp was soooo itchy.

Winkingowl · 26/01/2019 19:29

I don’t think I have seborrheic dermatitis, having looked at the symptoms but it does say it can be started by use of harsh chemicals and detergents. I will not discount this though as the locations affected tie in exactly, forehead, nose and upper back. My skin is very sensitive to itchy wool clothing and I have to remove nylon makers labels from my clothes. I think my immune system has been at a low having just got over a bad cold which probably hasn’t helped.

Ok, I’m clearly weird. For years I had an horrifically itchy, scaly, flaky scalp; started using Aussie shampoo and it healed with no issues at all... I’ve been using a Tresemme clarifying shampoo for the last few weeks and it’s starting to come back! I had no idea Aussie could be bad - I’ve recommended it to everyone Blush

WeeM · 27/01/2019 01:09

See this is weird reading this now as I have struggled with an itchy flaky scalp for years and sometimes it bleeds as it’s so itchy. I also use Aussie shampoo off and on whenever the mood takes me/it’s on special. At the moment my scalp is really good and I’m not using Aussie....I wonder if that could be why!
I also can’t use anything that contains panthenol as it just makes my hair lank and greasy looking. Which cuts out a lot! I’ve got herbal essence atm.
Been wanting to try the body shop ginger for a while now so might give that a go.

BumboBaggins · 27/01/2019 12:27

Second vote for Body shop ginger shampoo. Brilliant stuff.

Winkingowl · 27/01/2019 20:11

Having read yongnian's post I have decided to start a course of Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo, even though I don’t have dandruff. I figure there is no harm in trying. Prior to this I was using the following products which are helping. Diprobase Lotion; Childs Farm moisturiser (grapefruit and organic tea tree) Found this very soothing, when it was very itchy. Child’s Farm 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner (organic rhubarb and custard) Found this was good for my fine/thin hair and didn’t cause any irritation.

CadiM · 27/01/2019 21:18

I'd been using Aussie for about 3 weeks and had such an itchy scalp after two weeks. A few days of a L'Oreal one and I'm back to normal now. I don't consider myself to have sensitive skin or scalp normally but I won't be using it again.

justilou1 · 28/01/2019 11:14

Don't touch it with a bargepole! Avoid SLS and Silicones if you can - you'll be fine after that. (Although some people find fragrances can set them off too, I found silicones were the biggest trigger for me. My hair is SOOOOOOOO much thicker since I ditched them!). Klorane is fab. (Love the Desert Date range - mostly because it smells like Christmas Pudding, or sticky toffee.)

yongnian · 28/01/2019 17:02

Hi winkingowl I started down this route too, working my way through various anti-dandruff shampoos but I think for me, none of them contained enough of the active ingredients to stop what’s actually causing the problem. Only Selsun did this, after years of trying. It’s currently out of stock however, so have reluctantly started the head and shoulders clinical shampoo which contains the active ingredient in Selsun (selenium suplhide). Early indications are not bad, so will see but am looking on Amazon etc for any surplus stock just in case it’s a longer wait til Selsun is back available on prescription.
Once it is under control properly I know I’ll be able to mix it up with normal shampoo.
It took me a long time to have this properly diagnosed and the bits I get on my face ears etc are relatively mild, so nothing like the scary google pix - but still, it is the same thing.
Sympathies to all with an itchy scalp, I do find it very miserable personally and have been so glad to get some relief from it finally.
