DD wnats a very short hair cut

DD (just 5) has shoulder length straight hair which she wears in two bobbles. She has been asking to have her hair cut "like a boys" for some time. I'm taking her to the hairdressers on Friday for this radical hair cut, but have no idea what this is going to look like. She doesn't want any hair to get in her eyes when it's windy! Anybody any ideas what style I could ask the hairdresser for? I've googled for photos that I can take, but can't find anything but long bobs.

crop?

Skribble · 02/01/2007 22:55

Go for something in between, in case she does have second thoughts if she is still adament you can get it shorter next time.

What about a short bob, layered a bit, perhaps higher at the back.

Clayhead · 02/01/2007 22:56

My dd (5) has a graduated bob, higher at the back than the front.

Skribble · 02/01/2007 22:56

Not in pink and not as shaved in at the back .

Skribble · 02/01/2007 22:57

Pixie type thing

brimfull · 02/01/2007 22:58

my dd had a very short bob at that age ,with the back cut a lot higher. She wore a clip on the top of her head .It looked really sweet and very french.Used to get loads of comments on it.

My DD (9yo) had her hair cut similar to the pixie haircut linked to below but with more of a fringe. She loved it for a while but got bored that it wasn't as versatile as longer hair. She's now growing it out which is taking a while.

My SIL (hairdresser) cuts it and has always been good about 'try it shorter - and if you like it we can make it even shorter'

jeangenie · 02/01/2007 23:23

DD1 (4 at the time) had a haircut like the pixie one skribble posted. looked gorgeous. I would put a clip in it sometimes to remind myself she is a girl

we just asked for a boy's basic haircut, i.e. short at sides but asked for slightly longer at back. Have a little choppy fringe put in - GORGEOUS.

(however, if you do go this route be very prepared for lots of "what a lovely little boy" comments, unless your DD wears skirts/plenty of girly colours etc - mine doesn't and the world was convinced she was male, I was even challenged one day in the greengrocers when I said she wasn't. as if I might be mistaken!)

My dd is 4 and also hates her hair blowing around. It's quite long now, just below the end of the shoulder blades and is straight like your dd's. She's constantly asking to have it cut but unless you go for very short any shorter haircut will end up getting in their face in a more annoying way than longer hair which you can always plait, put in a bun, all kinds of things to keep it out of the way. I'd think twice if I were you, just be sure she'll want it short for a long while because the growing out process can be very irritating.

nothing cuter than a little pixie cut on a girl

charliecat · 03/01/2007 01:52

Link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1700&threadid=188473#3878900\this was my dd last year. we are still short now, and shes still happy with it...boy comments have stopped being mentioned, but whether thats because she used to it and brushes it off I dont know}

charliecat · 03/01/2007 01:52

oops here?

brimfull · 03/01/2007 10:51

she's adorable charliecat!

She does definitely know that it will take a long time to grow back, if she doesn't like it? Just saying because a friend's dd had her hair cut short, didn't like it and was gutted when she realised that it was going to take months - or even years - to get her long hair back. Not saying don't go for it - just make sure she realises that it will take a long time for it to grow back.

MumtoLaura · 03/01/2007 13:06

I love the pixie type thing Skribble, not sure how much up keep it would need though (can't see her wanting it blow dried all the time). She used to have very long hair and had half of it cut as a half way stage, and she is still asking for it shorter. Good point about it getting in her eyes and not being able to tie it back Imaginaryfriend. I'll have another chat with her about how long it will take to grow it back.

I used to have my hair like cc's dd, because it was madly curly. I hated it. It looks really sweet, but I hated not being able to wear all the nice hair things like my friends did and as a child it was really hard to get through the in between bit when growing it out. I'd def start with a bob, which if she doesnt like will be a lot easier to grow down a bit.
My dd is the opposite, I'd really like her to have a bob but she insists on having it long, even though it really is too fine to wear long.
