grey hair and winter

Hi - I have very dark brown hair which is starting to have quite a bit of grey. At the moment I dye it my natural colour every 3 months but between colouring sessions the grey is now very obvious as my hair is so dark. I've tried highlights but they look ridiculous and unnatural. I'm a winter with pale skin so highlights don't look right at all.

Any ideas?

Do you use a permenant dye?
What about using a semi-permenant wash in to mask the new greys in between?
They don't take as long as a permenant to work but obviously they'll wash out a bit every time you wash your hair.

I have mid/dark brown with grey (I'm 50 this year) and my 'sloution' was to have it cropped and go lighter .
At the moment I'm coppery gold, I'm going to dye it today maybe this week add some highlights (I don't think I can be bothered doing the two at the same time plus my hair might take umbrage)
It's very short though so not the way for everyone.

I have the same problem and I'm going to try superdrug colour shampoo. I hope it masks them while I decide if I am going to embrace the grey!

I'm the same, a winter with dark cool toned hair. Highlights look horrible on me, and even freshly dyed it's hard to not have red tones I don't want. Hate it :(

I'm 55 and have the same problem. Winter (was v. dark brown hair) with pale skin. Am terribly prob totally grey underneath. Now get a professional semi-permanent mid-brown root colour every 6 weeks, with a red/plum wash just for fun. Hair is cut in a severe classic long jaw-length bob with short fringe. High maintenance but looks good.

Every three months wouldn't be enough to cover the grey OP.

I have to do my roots every month or they'll show.

Is the problem with roots or just a smattering of grey throughout?
If it is roots then the root touch-up dye in a box works well and much more quickly than the whole head job.
I started out with very dark brown hair but have had loads of grey for more than 10 years, I'm now 53. I've found that gradually lightening the brown colour looks much more natural and avoids the helmet look of a single flat colour which can be very aging. I now have my roots done professional every 5 -6 weeks. I'd have it down every 4 weeks if I could afford to.

I am a winter too and using cool ash brown rather then brown with warm, red chestnut tones. I get almost no reddishness.

I had the same problem , tried highlights and supposedly ash colours but still went warm which looked awful with my skin tone , I decided to just let the grey grow out 7 month ago ! Looks much better with my skin tone Takes a long time but will be worth it to be free from the colouring every 4 weeks :)

My friend who was very dark has let her grey grow out and it looks amazing. Her hair is a really beautiful silver colour cut into a very chic bob and she looks gorgeous and about 15 years younger.

Cromwell, do you do it at home,do you mind sharing which brand / colour please?

I love the idea of embracing the grey but there's not that much of it yet so I think it will just look like Iazy. My friend has recommended a spray by Josh wood which is a bit like colour wow apparently. I'm going to give it a try.

I just wish there was a colour I could put in my hair that would make it less obvious when my roots are showing!

I didn't follow the instructions and just rubbed it on the grey and left it for 20mins and then washed my hair with some more. It definitely looked better, less grey..I think once I've used it a few times, it should work better..iykwim

Nice and Easy root touch up, it costs about £5. It works much faster than the whole head stuff and comes with a little brush which i used to paint it onto the bits around my temples and along the parting. The colours are bit limited for the touch up so I used bog standard medium brown. Nice and Easy do a medium ash brown in their whole head range which I think is good for we 'cool' colour gals. I think the trick is to try to gradually get a bit lighter to avoid the dark brown/grey contrast.
