Get me out of Jeans and Ts

ok - halfway through my 40s and i wear jeans EVERY day and a t-shirt or a top....

I want to look a bit more grown up, but i dont find heels comfortable, and so end up in trainers all the time, my feet get really cold (unless its summer)

I never found tights comfy.... I do own dresses, and skirts, and stuff.... but how do i get myself wearing them again?

So - stylish mn-ers, sort me out (not much of a budget)

Smart heavy leggings trousers sound good, can I ask where from? I can't be doing with the ordinary ones and the way they cling about my knees. I hanker for the ski pants I had as a teen with the strap thingies that went under your feet. They gave a lovely line worn with boots, no wrinkly bits.

228agreenend · 15/02/2016 22:09

Clip - I remember them. I used to wear them all the time.

AgathaF · 16/02/2016 07:36

Have you tried the thick woolly type tights instead of opaques? I really don't like opaques or any other nylon tights - no warmth in them and they make me feel itchy, but love the thick cotton, woolly type. I wear them most days through winter with a dress or skirt and ankle boots. Tesco sell them, either patterned or plain and in different collours too.

CallieTorres · 16/02/2016 07:43

My heavy style leggings were from next a couple of years ago

Theyre heavier than normal leggings but are stretchy
Have zips on ankles

(day 3.... Boden tunic top and the leggings - possibly outing myself!!)

Hi,
I pretty much wear jeans and tops everyday. Dh booked a birthday trip away for me recently, just the one night but in a posh hotel-that very quickly forced me to get my act together. I ordered various skirts and dresses and kept one dress which despite being described as a skater is floral and longer, one cord skirt and a smart top to wear with jeans. I find a nice pair of long boots really makes Jeans look smarter and I wear the black cord skirt I bought a lot. I also wear scarves, nice necklaces etc with all things and find they make me look smarter. Plus natural make up and groomed hair always work. Failing that I pop on a woolly hat and a nice coat.
I feel smarter in the skirt and dress but the tights really annoy me as they fall down-maybe they are too big but I always have this problem with most things. Just my shape I think.
Good luck.

MummaV · 16/02/2016 11:33

I buy my heavy style leggings from h&m. Lovely, thick, don't bunch and don't go see-through!

I really need to move out of my jeans and T-shirt comfort zone too. Will be keeping an eye on this thread.

Corygal1 · 16/02/2016 11:52

Well, I only wore dresses ever until I changed jobs and now I'm trouser girl. I loathe fitted trousers and insist on comfort, so I went athleisure or sport luxe, as I believe the trends are known.

Joggers in nice silky fabric worked for me - miles easier to wear than jeans and less boring. Primark performs these brilliantly, size up.

Swing tops or skinny vests with a nice massive jersey make you look more dressed than a t-shape t.

Skater shoes look smarter than trainers.

Finish with vast scarf.

RattieOfCatan · 16/02/2016 14:29

Marking my place. I'm very firmly in the jeans and t's camp. I did buy some dresses for my holiday last year and loved wearing them, but I was wearing sandals/flip flops mostly then. I can't wear heels at all and I feel like skirts are made for heels really! Nice flats are hard to come by :(

notagiraffe · 16/02/2016 17:44

You could do it gradually. I'd definitely start by ditching trainers for some good boots that work with jeans. Then I'd improve what goes on top - some classic white shirts, cashmere etc. I'd ditch the jeans last and start by moving onto jeans cut trousers in different colours or fabrics.

I used to live in trainers and I always felt frumpy. Now I always wear boots in winter and nice sandals or pumps in summer as they make outfits feel finished, even though I live in jeans.

SayAGreatBigThankyou · 16/02/2016 19:14

following!

P1nkP0ppy · 16/02/2016 19:22

Following too! I'm retired and have a wardrobe of far too many clothes that either I get on and wear or the lot go to the charity shop.
I'm sick of looking scruffy and seriously need to buck up my ideas.

Do you wear slippers at home or shoes/boots in the house?

CallieTorres · 16/02/2016 20:04

slippers mainly, i dont like having cold feet, i do sandals in summer (with jeans eek)

now need to sort an outfit for tomorrow...

Good advice from hollie although you have to tell us why you wanted to be a black coffee drinker Confused

ClementineWardrobe · 16/02/2016 21:46

Watching thread.I live in jeans and t's, or leggings and wellies and old shirts (dog walking). Trying to get better....bought some lands end polo tops in the sale, to smarten up with a collar, and some check shirts in warm flannel. I'm not a farmer, but you would be forgiven for thinking it, given that description.

SuperFlyHigh · 16/02/2016 22:02

Thanks for this thread.

I get stuck in a rut too and then order something (asos obi wrap dress) that I either don't wear much (heck it's too cold and too short now) but I have lovely skirts which I don't wear much (gorgeous floral brighter print louche skirt) and suedette looking embroidered short stretch skirt (H&M).

I think my key is finding nice things to wear with what I have to bring them on trend, eg saw woman on trend wearing Bardot off shoulder jumper/top, saw one in oasis but was too stretchy and neckline not flattering. Then I saw a top just like it £14 louche (joy the store) wore it and it fits the on trend but suits me too. (I wore them when I was 17 when they were last trendy in the late 1980s/1990!). When I wore both skirts and the Bardot top I got compliments! Yay!

It's a question of being brave.

moptopp · 17/02/2016 16:52

I'm going to need this thread when summer clothes start appearing. I'm moving somewhere hot and I'm going to need a whole new wardrobe - I'm currently living in skinny jeans and big slouchy jumpers, not really translatable to a tropical climate!

mrsmortis · 17/02/2016 17:02

If you are taking baby steps you could stay in Jeans but swap the t-shirt for a shirt and the trainers for your ankle boots. A tailored jacket over the shirt would take it to the next level.

I wear something like that quite often for weekend stuff where I want to be smart but not look like I'm dressed for the office.

GreenSand · 18/02/2016 03:35

Mop Linen trousers, and cotton tops - shirt like material is cooler than tee-shirt like cotton. But I need to be covered as well.
Found some nice ones in Tesco last summer, bubble tops, with the elasticated bottom, with those small holes embroidered round the edge. Does that even make sense? I avoid buttons, and want shirt material, that pulls over head, with sleeves, and takes a pair of GG boobs!!!
Never really did skirts, but when I do dresses, my thighs drip sweat, I prefer it to soak into trousers Hmm.
If your going somewhere where local ladies have a very different shape typically to you, stock up!!! I cannot find bras that go above a D Shock

moptopp · 18/02/2016 09:58

Thanks GreenSand - I hadn't considered the sweat dripping issue! I'd thought I'd be in skirts and dresses for the, um, airflow, but I can see the benefits of trousers Grin

I know what you mean by the bubble tops, I'll look out for them. And yes, I'm planning the shopping spree to end all shopping sprees before we go, to get stocked up to last me til we can get back to the UK for a visit.

Sorry for the hijack OP - how's the new look going?

GreenSand · 18/02/2016 11:33

Mop One other possibility, if you are suitably proportioned, is evens cool comfort shorts under a dress. I scrape into their sizing range, and am currently in an M&S tee-shirt maxi dress, and Evans shorts. It's a cool 27 here ATM. I wear more clothing here than I would on a day at 27 in the UK, as I've aclimitised, and the humidity is lower. But not as far as some in COATS and wool HATS!!!! Evans, if you read this, please can you make some of your shorts in a smaller size, as I'm shrinking. Cheers.

Callie how's it going?

moptopp · 18/02/2016 11:48

Grin at the idea that 27 degrees requires coats and wool hats...

CallieTorres · 26/02/2016 17:28

quick update - yup - i'm sticking with it, but now missing the ease of wearing jeans, (confession, sitting here in black velvet 'lounge'(?) trousers)
