Coat for the coldest person on earth

That'd be me. Seriously, I am freezing all the time. Last year I got myself a Jack Wolfskin Iceguard which I absolutely love, but since I washed it, it's just not warm enough. I can't do down filled because I'm allergic to it. I am layering like an onion (today I had a silk t-shirt, a denim shirt and a cashmere jumper under my coat, a silk velvet scarf and a pair of sheepskin gloves on top of it, and I was still cold) but it's not working. I have found the Patagonia Women's Vosque 3-in-1 Parka which is over the top end of my budget, but if it means I'm not constantly cold, I'd find the money. Does anyone know if it will actually keep me warm?!? Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

I see Mountain Hardwear or Marmot seem to be the TV presenter jacket of choice at the moment ..

rubybleu · 19/01/2016 02:55

I honestly can't remember what mine is (maybe a Trillium parka) but I'm comfortable in it at 5 deg and below, but I do have Raynauds and a real need to keep my core temperature quite high. I have a Canadian friend who wears hers in London basically from October to March!

Looking at the website, I think my husband has an Expedition and wears it at similar temps to me, so I guess it really boils down to how you deal with cold.

We are actually in Canada currently and its been down to -15/20ish during the day - worth it's weight in gold.

A really good coat is expensive, can't recommend any specific brand, but 600$ (300pounds?) is the general price I've seen. You must never wash really warm coats in the washer, it ruins the insulation (no matter what the makers claim). I get coats that can be divided in to coats and mashine wash the top layer, the warmer layer goes to the dry cleaning when dirty.

I get cold on my legs mainly, and head. A hat really helps with the cold. As do leggings under trousers. I also put insoles, which make boots really comfortable and much warmer.

Agree with Jermajesty sheepskin is the best but if you are looking for cheaper version, here you can find some nice faux fur coats under £100.

Jermajesty · 19/01/2016 19:31

My sheepskin was £60 from a market, total bargain!! I bet there are some decent ones on eBay.

MadisonMontgomery · 19/01/2016 19:58

Canada Goose! I got one last year with much debating about whether it would be too warm - I have been wearing it since the temperature has dropped & it is fab.

KanyesVest · 19/01/2016 22:58

Sheepskin! Amazing idea. Off to eBay.

I love my Goose.

KanyesVest · 19/01/2016 23:48

OK, I've found a couple of possibilities on eBay. But, and it's a big but, will I look like Del Boy?

I got a thick wool coat from cos last year. I'm surprised at how warm and toasty it is, way warmer than any down parka type coat I've ever had. Tk maxx have had some beautiful Jaeger ones in recently.

kylesmybaby · 20/01/2016 01:14

Ocelot - I love the lands end parkas and it will be idea for football every weekend. I'm am however just 5ft. Will it drown me? Otherwise I will go for the jacket type in size 10. Even that looks like it would fit ok and cover part of my legs. Thanks

kylesmybaby · 20/01/2016 01:19

Have now found it in petite can have it in the plum colour now or wait for the black. Decisions??? I'm rubbish buying online.

tabulahrasa · 20/01/2016 01:26

I've got a heated bodywarmer that I wear under my jacket...it's got a rechargeable unit - it's amazing.

I believe they also do socks...

Jermajesty · 20/01/2016 09:12

Ha ha Kanye, I did wonder the same re Del Boy or Mottie!! But I'm so warm I don't actually care. Plus no one has likened me to either so far (at least not to my face!)

KanyesVest · 20/01/2016 12:44

Did it, just bought a sheepskin coat and hat on ebay! My brother has promised to sell it on to one of his very retro friends if I end up looking like a dodgey 80s used car dealer.

I will be keeping this thread for when I need to replace my jack wolfskin though, thanks for all the suggestions.

The Patagonia in the OP is way too thin. Haven't read the FT but for a fellow freezing person I got -

Marmot Montreaux coat - mine's 600 fill pure goose down made for Canadian and N. American harsh winters: Click

(You can take off the ghastly fur trim, and the hood, and it comes in black and other colours)

Also Aigle Cuckmere: Click

Twinklestein · 20/01/2016 16:27

Sheepskin can be very heavy and smells minging when it gets wet.

MissyMaker · 20/01/2016 16:32

I have just got myself one of these Rudsak coats. It is AMAZING and a total bargain at £150. I'm tall and long limbed, and it fits me perfectly. It is sooo cosy and warm, and it is beautifully designed. Hood's a bit big though.

turkeyboots · 20/01/2016 16:37

I have a really warm Lands End wool coat which may work for you? Ive only started buttoning it this week as the weather is properly cold. Was boiled in it over Christmas!

MissyMaker · 20/01/2016 16:39

Sorry, just realised you said no down. Shame - they really are amazing coats.

Twinklestein · 20/01/2016 18:13

Oh fuck, I missed the down bit. Shock
