Why does my face still feel dry even though I moisturise?

Jemster · 17/01/2016 17:20

My face never feels properly moisturised & I've tried so many of the moisturisers in Boots. When I put them on they just seem to disappear and my face is left still feeling quite dry & tight.

I am 40 and am starting to look more tired? I used to look ok without make up but wouldn't be seen without it now. I need to make more effort.

My skin care is not great I must admit but I'd like to change this. What sort of moisturiser should I be using? There are so many types & I'm a bit fed up with wasting my money & not seeing any difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

This is my first foray back into S&B for a couple of years and this thread was right at the top - it's funny because I've had the same prob for ages and have just started using Eucerin Dry Skin Replenishing Face Cream Night 5% that I bought in desperation at the local chemist. Pleasantly surprised how much softer and more supple my skin feels.

(I also need to get back to being disciplined about exfoliating and drinking more water which I had been doing but let slip, mainly because I was so disheartened about the dryness.)

You to not using cleanser with SLS as it's very drying and, for me, an out-and-out irritant.

A PP mentioned the Eucerin Anti-Ageing Hyaluron Filler Night Cream which I looked at decided against as it's twice the price of the one I bought (presumably because of the hyaluron), but I might get some next time.

The Eucerin range is on 3 for 2 at Boots which I've just discovered Googling the product names Angry

My exposed skin (so face, neck & hands) are exactly the same in the cold & windy weather OP.

I don't use anything harsh to wash my face with, as I have sensitive skin at the best of times. I have tried lots of moisturisers over the years (I am also 40), but many leave my skin with a stinging or burning sensation.

What I find the best for me is cocoa butter on my face with the Cien SOS hand cream from Lidl for my hands (obviously Smile). I've spent £'s trying more expensive creams but always come back to my trusty cocoa butter!

Busyhazel · 20/01/2016 13:44

I also have dry skin and swear by Liz Earle cream cleanser which you apply to dry skin and remove with a wet muslin cloth. The moisturiser in the same range is also excellent , not cheap but lasts ages

PinkFondantFancy · 20/01/2016 16:00

Marking my place. Insanely dry and red face and neck here.

timemaychangeme · 20/01/2016 16:07

I had this for ages - mid-50's. I'd been using a v expensive clarins moisturiser that I'd got for a present. When it ran out, I couldn't afford it and bought the Aldi Expert Regeneration Night Cream. It's in a red pot with silver lid and although it's a night cream I often use it in the morning too and it's not too rich. For the first time in ages, my skin feels comfortable and not pulling on the cheeks and forehead. I also cleanse with neat almond oil. Damp face, massage a little in and take off with a muslin cloth or flannel.

I use the Aldi Caviar 3 minute peel mask (but think you'd have a job getting it as I always look out for it and have only ever seen one pot, which I bought. I think people are buying it up and selling it on ebay.

Obs2016 · 20/01/2016 16:09

Me too. But, I can't be spending tonnes on very perfumed moisturises, only to find my skin doesn't like them.

So Sali Huhges (guardian Beauty) talks about this a lot.

She say people mistake dehydrated skin and dry skin.

If you have the former then even the thickest creams won't really help as it's not oil you need but water. Using heavy moisturisers just makes your skin tight, flaky and spotty all at the same time.

If you have dry skin you need to look for creams/serums with hyaluronic acid.

Dungandbother · 20/01/2016 18:59

The best cream.......

I have tight dry skin. Always have. Tried everything.
I'm a lucky gal, I've even tried Creme de la met, Eve lom, every posh brand you can think of......

I'm now 40. My skin has always been like this and also sensitive.

And I use

Aveeno but has to be blue lid. Frequently third off in Boots. So about £3.60 for a huge tube.

And I use la Roche Posay effaclar face wash. It foams but it absolutely doesn't dry.

I like a serum underneath too but it's never enough.

Dungandbother · 20/01/2016 19:05

And I've also had endless brands of hyaluronic acid to try and they do bugger all for my tight feeling.

Tried Eucerin too.

Blue Aveeno. Best cream ever. And it clears up DS eczema skin super fast too. Normal Aveeno (green lid) does nothing for us. I discounted everyone's coos of AVEENO for years because the normal one isn't strong enough for me. But now I sing BLUE AVEENO from the rooftops.

I have a tube in practically every room of the house.
At work I get access to pretty much every beauty brand imaginable so I really have tried them all.

Wolpertinger · 20/01/2016 19:09

Interesting to see the Eucerin popularity on these threads. Hyaluronic is the in thing now - but Eucerin's thing is urea which is really hydrating and as old as the hills. Very popular in Germany where you see loads of hand creams with it in. Here it just seems to be in Eucerin and cracked heel balm!

Second a visit to Sali Hughes. Also visit Caroline Hirons site. Look down the side of the web version (not the mobile one) and look at her Cheat Sheets.

I love Neals Yard. I use their orange flower or frankincense facial wash (gently foaming) and their frankincense hydrating cream. At night their beauty sleep concentrate (which smells divine!)

My skin has never been better - I suffer from rosacea, and this really helps keep the redness and flakiness at bay. It's not a cure, but it sure helps.

YellowTulips · 21/01/2016 13:55

I suffer from eczema and my skin is dry as opposed to dehydrated.

As some other posters I've tried all the posh brands (eve Lom, creme de la mer etc)

But the one I keep coming back to is my grandmothers favourite Astral in a big blue pot and cleansing with boots traditional cold cream.

Cheap as hell but very effective on me (sadly aveeno blue or green just doesn't work on me).

Bolshybookworm · 21/01/2016 15:14

Another eczema sufferer here who finds cheap creams much better than the luxurious ones. For me, the best ones I've tried are avene for dry skin, eucerin and Nivea night regenerating for dry skin. All much better than clarins, Clinique, Estée Lauder, ren, dr hauska (these are the ones I've tried).

hugoagogo · 21/01/2016 17:52

Eucerin for me too, in fact I have just started with the night cream it is brilliant
this one

Coconut oil is a godsend + very multipurpose so even if you buy a tub + it doesn't work with your skin, it won't be a waste of money. Would recommend ordering it from Amazon if you do because I've seen it a lot more expensive in health places like Holland + Barrett.

In regards to skin products, I've found the only thing that works for me is using a thick night moisturiser both morning + night. Nivea do a really inexpensive one that works perfectly well. Good luck with your search!

junebirthdaygirl · 22/01/2016 21:00

Having terrible experience of dry skin since entering menopause. To be expected l have learn. I have used that aloe vera propolis for 2 months and my skin feels brilliant. No hidden interest in recommending it. Was sceptical but desperate. I find it actually works

maggiethemagpie · 23/01/2016 08:53

I second trilogy rosehip oil and Liz Earle. The LE superskin moisturiser is amazing! I first tried it in the summer and it was too oily but my skin must change a lot in winter as now it is just right!

Pupsiecola · 23/01/2016 09:56

June I have been in surgical menopause for 4 years. I feel like I've got my skincare sorted for now. The Eucerin nigh cream (on top of No.7 Serum) and Eucerin red skin day moisturiser seems to be ensuring it is soft and plumo 24/7. LRP cleansing milk too. I have well managed early Rosacea and incredibly sensitive skin BTW.

justonemorethread · 23/01/2016 10:02

I strongly recommend e45 facial wash. Cleanses and moisturiser in one.
Also making an effort to drink more, not easy in this cold weather!
I've also been using bio oil for stretch marks and started rubbing a bit on my face and neck and I'm sure it's helped!

chumbler · 23/01/2016 11:53

Stop washing your face and use an exfoliatior once or twice a week. Take make up off with a gentle cleanser. That's what I do and solved my problems :)

pinkhousesarebest · 23/01/2016 12:01

I had this until the Eucerin cream (with urea) was recommended on here by Frugal. Skin transforming. And so cheap.

pussinboots61 · 23/01/2016 22:19

I have very dry skin too. The E45 wash you mention, is it the one with the pump? Is it ok on your face? I've used it in my body.
