How do I wear Chanel Rouge Noir without looking as if I've been out slaughtering livestock?

Seriously. I can't get the damn stuff on right.

Is it just me or is the brush particularly long and bendy? I have lusted after a bottle of this for so long and now my nails are finally decent enough to wear varnish - and it looks awful.

(and yes, I am aware of how pathetic this thread is, but ds is asleep and I'm meant to be revising...)

the trick is to wear it on VERY short nails. it's wrong if you're nails are long at all.

i love the brush! it glides on so well.

you only need two coats.

Totally agree with expat. If your nails are long you'll look like a tart.

SnafuOutOfHiding · 19/12/2006 13:30

Don't worry, they're short. They used to be bitten to the quick and now they're a nice shape, is all.

Oh don't know then. Red and dark colours look awful in my nails too - it just doesn't suit me like it does other people. I stick to those colours on my toes and have my plain acrylic ones on hands.

SnafuOutOfHiding · 19/12/2006 13:34

Oh, it's so disappointing

I was thinking of taking the bottle to my local nail place, having a manicure and then asking them to apply it for me Is that unutterably sad?

Don't think they would mind doing that at all.
At least then you would have an idea whether you are doing something wrong or the colour just doesn't suit.

My top tip to make sure it's all even is a bottom coat of clear, then I put the two layers on with another layer of clear, and put it on as quickly and thickly as possible. Then another layer of clear, and then when I've given it twice as long as I think it needs to dry, I jump in the bath for a soak so that any bits that go "over the edges" just float off.

caffeinequeen · 19/12/2006 14:10

Sorry, a bit enthusiastic posting only one layer of top coat - not two!

expatinscotland · 19/12/2006 14:13

I skip the base coat entirely when I'm using Rouge Noir. I go over the nails w/varnish remover, so the varnish aheres.

Then I brush on a coat and give it about 5 mins. Then the other.

I use Mega Shine topcoat w/it.

Ok, so I've used all your tips. I don't think I was putting it on thickly enough, and I also filed my nails down even shorter to guard against tartery.

They look pretty good, so I look forward to showing them off tomorrow at my long, boozy, girly Christmas lunch. I love MN, we know everything
