Where do fat women shop?

FrostyNipples · 03/01/2016 20:46

Please don't say Evans.

I need grown up wardrobe staples that suit a very very wobbly pear shaped size 16/18 ideally online.

I don't want sparkles or high fashion just quality, value clothes that don't fall to pieces.

Help! Smile

I'm also a fatty Grin and I shop at ASOS and ASOS only. It's amazing and the clothes are generous sizes and very flattering. I wore dresses from there over Xmas and new year and got several complements on each one.

RogueV · 03/01/2016 21:22

Oh come on guys. Size 16-18 is fat.

FrostyNipples · 03/01/2016 21:25

Argh.

Some people at size 16/18 just aren't fat. They are larger but not fat.
I however am fat, and only asked because, regardless of size, flabby people suit different cuts of clothing.

What a well proportioned size 16 looks like in clothes is not what I look like.

I'm a 16/18 and do consider myself fat, although not ridiculously so.

I shop at joules, river island, h&m, Laura Ashley, fat face, white stuff, new look, primark, monsoon.

All sorts of places!

Owllady · 03/01/2016 21:26

I'm 5ft 9 and a size 16 and I'm fat. I need to lose at least 3 stone
It doesn't make me inferior though

frikadela01 · 03/01/2016 21:28

I'm 5ft 10 in and am normally a size 18... im fat and my BMI certainly agrees with me.

Goodbetterbest · 03/01/2016 21:30

I love shops like Lindy Bop because the styles suit curves. Pencil skirts, blouses, off the shoulder tops, wiggle dresses - all made for those of us who feel fat. Love their ankle grazing cigarette pants (I'm a size 14 and can't get a Next slim leg trouser over my calf muscle) And they have a fab sale on at the moment.

RogueV · 03/01/2016 21:31

Owl you certainly are not inferior.

There just seemed to be some 'fat' denial upthread.

itsbetterthanabox · 03/01/2016 21:32

At that size you can shop anywhere! Take your pick.
For bigger sizes that they don't do in every shop yours clothing is good as is H&M plus range. New looks inspire range is ok sometimes too.

hollinhurst84 · 03/01/2016 21:34

Places I've bought stuff
Yours, Boden, pink clove, asos curve, Dorothy Perkins, M&S (for jeans and jeggings), sainsburys, lady voluptuous, collectif

Chewbecca · 03/01/2016 21:35

I'm 16 18 after Christmas and I most certainly am fat.

Violeta by Mango is one place I like that you might not have considered. The designs work well to flatter my wobbly bits.

WilburIsSomePig · 03/01/2016 21:35

It doesn't make me inferior though

Good god, of course you're not!

TallPumpkinSpiceLatte · 03/01/2016 21:36

Hi there OP, I think you're getting a rough time here. I totally get that if you're short and not toned what could be 'curvy' on a taller figure could be classed as plump (or fat if you will) on shorter figures. I am size 18 and 5'4'' and classify myself as fat.

Here are the shops I get my work wear from, I hate most plasticky fabrics (viscose / polyester etc) and I like to wear decently cut jersey dresses for work with tights and shoes or boots. To accessorise I use a pashmina type scarf (I have a chilly office but hate being swaddled in massive woollens)

On top of the dresses I wear fitted cord jackets in a variety of dark colours.

On the weekend I live in jeans and Breton tops, fleeces and trainers.

My dresses I get from the following shops:

  • Phase Eight
  • Hobbs
  • Monsoon (you need to pick carefully, there can be an awful lot of viscose in there
  • Seasalt
  • Boden
  • M&S, once again need to be pretty choosy, occasionally they come up with really decent dresses but you need to look hard.

My casual clothes are pretty much exclusively Seasalt, with the odd bit of Boden thrown in.

Hope this helps

missmargot · 03/01/2016 21:39

Banana Republic, ASOS, Gap, Baukjen, Boden, Damsel in a Dress, H&M, Alice Temperley Somerset.

Goodbetterbest · 03/01/2016 21:39

A lot of high street shops employ vanity sizing techniques so we still shop there and keep kidding ourselves. The sizing isn't what it used to be, and it's not doing is as a nation lurching towards an obesity problem any favours. I'm a 14/16, 5'4 and definitely classed as overweight - if not obese. I am fat. I don't want anyone to tell me I'm not just so I hand over my cash to them.

sofiahelin · 03/01/2016 21:41

Just had a look at yours..... cheap but not classy

Owllady · 03/01/2016 21:43

I think people do feel fat = inferior though and I guess that's why people get spikey about it
You receive so many negative comments, even when you don't ask for it. The amount of people I've had say
Well the weight suits you
You always look great for your size
Some men like big girls etc (wtf)
God the list is endless. But I just get dressed to make myself feel good and I've been with the same bloke for twenty years, so I don't need anyone's shitty misogynistic comments.

I don't care if people are far or not fat, but I do understand why people feel defensive about it.

WilburIsSomePig · 03/01/2016 21:47

You receive so many negative comments

That's so fucking wrong. My friend has had complete strangers insult her before; someone shouted terrible abuse at her from the passenger seat of a car. Bloody awful.

Owllady · 03/01/2016 21:52

People just do it without thinking as well. I've been refered to as a larger lady by people I'm just sitting having coffee with!
One of my friend (though tbh I can't bear to be with her anymore) said, do fat people not realise when their clothes are getting too tight for them as her other friends arm cuff was cutting into her arm

I just thought wtf, what do you fucking think. Do you notice when your clothes are getting too tight? Confused

I haven't always been big. I had a series of quite massive traumas in a very short period and it has triggered an emotional dependency on food that wasn't there before. I do need to deal with it though

madmotherof2 · 03/01/2016 21:53

I quite like the inspire range in New look

WilburIsSomePig · 03/01/2016 21:56

Flowers Owl Sad

DancingDuck · 03/01/2016 21:57

I'm a short pear shape. Good buys recently: M&S 'relaxed skinny' jeans in denim or black chino. OMG they fit so well if you have enormous bum and thighs. They are so comfortable, reasonably flattering (given the natural shape you're working with.) I currently live in them. Favourite jeans/chinos ever.

And best kept secret BHS. I found fantastic pure linen A line skirts in there over summer for a few ££. Closest version elsewhere was Jaeger sales at £££. They are well cut. I've bought a few pieces from BHS recently and because no one else goes in there, they all say, 'Ooh is that Monsoon/ Jaeger?' etc as the stuff is so well cut. H&M are well cut for larger sizes too I find. You have to hunt through the fashion dross but there's some lovely stuff among it.

FrostyNipples · 03/01/2016 22:04

Owl I did a truffle shuffle on a plane from Amsterdam because some young wit said 'thank fuck she didn't sit next to me' as I passed and his pals laughed. Ok I was a bit pissed or I likely wouldn't have unleashed my bare belly at a stranger but he was a dick and I had my DP behind me so I felt brave

I just want basics that are cut for wobbly fat rather than sized up lycra Xmas Sad

Violetta by Mango

MountainDweller · 03/01/2016 22:11

It's hard isn't it... I prefer bigger sizes in 'ordinary' shops to specific plus size shops.

I shop at Monsoon, boden, m&s (I like per Una), East (in the sale!!) and lands end (good quality casual stuff). Oh and ebay! I don't have to be smart often which makes it easier. Have some lovely knee length tunic dresses from monsoon this season - fitted at bust and skim over the rest. Perfect for me.
