I want to wear make up. Where do I start?!

I never wear make up but as I get older (nearly 40) I must reluctantly admit that I look more and more crap without it. I ony wear it when I go out so don't have much of a stash.

I'm never going to plaster it on - I can't imagine I'm going to start 'contouring' or anything but I think a light foundation and some mascara at least??

My eyes get sore if I wear mascara for more than a couple of days on the trot though so how do I get round that?

If you've got dry skin then avoid anything powdery. I love Rimmel foundations personally, I think they work really well. The one with the orange lid, the Wake Me Up one, actually does make me look more alert! You can chuck it on with your fingers and it looks perfect.

For starter lipsticks I always recommend that cheap brand No 17. There's a range of lipsticks they do called Mirror Shines which are bloody gorgeous, really moisturising and glossy and there's loads of shades. They're a sheer formula (go on lighter than in the tube) so don't be scared by them, they're very light and forgiving. Cheap as chips, I have about six of them.

Oh and the Aldi concealer clicky pen is brilliant for dark circles, by the way.

MidnightVelvetthe4th · 30/12/2015 22:23

Dragons pixi glow is very good but I only use it 3 times a week as its drying (I'm 40 on Saturday) and follow it with a serum/moisturiser. I do pixi glow, then hydrating toner then serum then moisturizer Smile
Some people use it every day though, adjust it according to how your skin feels

SixtyFootDoll · 30/12/2015 22:23

I cleanse using a Magnitone brush. It's been great on my spot prone skin.
Love the pixi tonic.

Makeup - Bobbi brown all the way. Find you're nearest and get them to make you over. Or their website will do online chats

Second MrsGloss GrinSmile

longdiling · 30/12/2015 22:35

I have just sent a request to join that group! If I'm going for a lighter look should i try and do something with my eyebrows? I just pluck them and they look pretty neat to me but I do use an eyebrow pencil if I'm going out, just to make them look more defined.

I was going to second the tubing mascara. I use blinc off amazon. I've ultra sensitive eyes and have chronic blepharitis this is the only stuff that doesn't irritate or itch me

Madnson · 30/12/2015 22:37

And for a simple foundation id stay away from cream foundations. Get a light concealer for under eyes/problem areas then a good powder. Hello Flawless by Benefit is good for coverage

MidnightVelvetthe4th · 30/12/2015 22:40

Eyebrows I don't know about as I dislike very defined brows with almost straight lines under them. I just brush some brow powder lightly through mine but others might say use the pencil or go and get them threaded then maintain that shape.

Post a pic of them when you're on MrsGloss and you will get lots of replies and suggestions Smile

midnight I'm a new MrsGloss member, woe is me Grin

I've just come back from a 4 day break tonight, I took nearly nothing with me apart from my bodyshop oil. No7 moisturiser and pixi mud cleanser and my skin went to flaky pot! I thought it was the wind at Bogner doing my skin in... I've not toned for 4 days but since staring the cleansing routine I've had to up my No7 use...

Sorry for the hijack op.

pieceofpurplesky · 30/12/2015 22:45

You sound like me as I don't wear much! I use a CC cream (like a bb cream), I have a bronzer for cheeks and some brown/beige eyeshadow. Only put eyeliner on my top lid as a wise women told me it makes you look younger (seems to work on me). I use an arbonne mascara as my eyes run with others but this one works for me (am not an arbonne rep just got a sample one and it worked so bought it)

longdiling · 30/12/2015 22:49

Oh man, the thought of posting even a picture of my eyebrows on that group is scary!! Does the eyebrow powder give a more subtle look than the pencil? If so that sounds ideal.

See you on there Dragons Smile before MrsGloss I had a very basic routine, now my regime at night can have 6 steps. 7 if you include eye cream Grin

Ha we post all sorts, no need at all to be afraid it's a very kind group. I find powder gives a softer look, mine was about £7 from Avon but it should be very easy to find in Boots or Superdrug Smile

I've had to start taking more care of my skin, I used a hot flannelflannel you wash off my makeup and lidl's anti wrinkle cream in the black tube straight after the flannel of an evening as I find it too rich for the day and I use aldis day cream for the day. The day cream alone has dried up my dry patches, but the wrinkle cream has smoothed my lines out.

I have red cheeks and was disappointed with cliniques anti redness foundation. I won't buy it again. I'm currently liking oriflame foundation, which for someone who is very lazy, i find it goes on easy and I don't have to worry about lines at my jaw etc.

littleleftie · 31/12/2015 14:36

My best investment has been getting my eyebrows waxed and tinted every 4/6 weeks. It really gives my face definition, and no amount of tutorials enabled me to draw them on/powder them on myself. Now I don't have to think about it - they are just there.

I have also sent a request to the FB group Grin

Madnson · 01/01/2016 18:36

Sorry what's Mrs gloss?

MidnightVelvetthe4th · 01/01/2016 21:08

It's a Facebook group Madnson about beauty, we talk about skincare and make up, sometimes clothes. It's called MrsGloss and the Goss Smile

Rpj16 · 01/01/2016 21:16

If you wont use it very often, maybe get one or two things from Clinique when they have offers on in boots - they sometimes have a freebee with samples of other things - moisturisers and mascaras. The mascara I had in a set lasted for ages! :)
