Best whitening toothpaste

Does anybody use a whitening toothpaste that visibly works?
There are a number of brands and I don't know which to try.

Mum liked (I think it was Colgate)...red shiny box, think it was called Max White...

I recommend Crest whitening strips. They are only on sale in the US (in any pharmacy) so if you know someone who is going ask them to buy them for you; they aren´t expensive and don´t take up much space in their luggage so it´s not too cheeky. I think you can buy them online too, but I´ve never done that.

I use the Colgate Total whitening toothpaste but it´s because I like the flavour; I don´t think it does any actual whitening. Anyone I know who has really white teeth does it with one of those whitening (bleaching) kits.

I was looking at the whitening kits in boots but I am scared in case I do some damage. My dentist charges about £360 so don't know if worth saving up and getting it done professionally.

Thought maybe just using a good whitening toothpaste in the meantime.

None of them really work, and the home whitening kits are downright dangerous (teeth aren't hair, if you fuck them up while bleaching them they won't grow back!)

The best thing you can do is to get them done by a dentist with Opalesence or similar, get a regular scale and polish from the hygienist, and avoid tea, coffee and red wine.

It' be expensive, but it's cheaper than rectifying the problems you'll have after using a DIY bleaching job with a product that isn't licensed in the UK.

I am not so sure if it is expensive from dentist. When you weigh up applications over time etc. Obviously the initial outlay is expensive , but overall probably not.

Thankfully, I no longer smoke, hate red wine and don't drink much coffee. I love tea ans diet coke but will have to restrict it.

I got a small sample months ago and started using it OralB antibacterial pro expert. its not overpowering and does taste different and not too minty but I like it.

Colgate Max 1 (the one that claims to lighten in 5 days) is afaik the highest % of bleaching agent allowed in 'normal' toothpaste - it definitely made a difference to mine and DH's teeth.

Is it a staining or discolouration problem?

If its staining then the hygienist will get rid of the staining. To prevent staining i use oral b brilliant shine and a colgate whitening mouthwash.

As you love tea, try yorkshire gold tea bags. They are £5.34 for 160 bags but they are the only tea bags that dont stain my teeth whereas other tea bags make my teeth look a mess after drinking tea for a few days.

If its discolouration thats the problem then the best results are the whitening from the dentist. I have had this done and it was not a pleasant experience! My gums were incredibly sore for a week afterwards and my jaw ached like mad during the 1.5 hours procedure in the dentists chair!

I think discolouration as opposed to staining . Was the pain worth it?

My teeth did look alot whiter, i was told afew times i looked like Simon Cowell!!

Its around 8 years ago when i had it done and im sure it was about £400 - £500

I also had these plastic teeth impressions done which i had to smear whitening stuff on them and wear them for half hour in the morning and half hour at night for about 4 days after the treatment at the dentist but because my gums were so sore the solution used to burn like crazy for the first 10 mins

Spend my dentist website says £180 each jaw. It also mentions impressions to do at home. I don't like pain but worth it I guess.

When i had mine done there wasnt the option of only having one jaw done.

They also do the impressions so if you feel the shine wearing off then you can buy a solution from the dentist to put in your impressions morning and night for 2 weeks or so.

A different dentist did tell me once that if you use whitening toothpaste after you have had the dentist treatment then you are removing the solution you have just paid to have put on!

They do take photographs for before and after comparisons.

I didnt keep my photos, i chucked them years ago otherwise i would of posted on here for you to see.

Thanks spend. I am not sure why they price it per jaw, I doubt anyone gets one jaw done.

don't buy anything over the counter in the UK, none of them work because it is illegal to sell anything that does. The babble on the pack carefully dances round this. Only effective legal treatment in the UK is from someone who studied teeth for five years.

yank import stuff does work. Not licensed in the UK. Think about it.

(Some on MN throw a strop at this, but it is your call - silly glowing teeth or no teeth later?)
