How to look 'expensive'

1000 replies

INeedSomeHelp · 30/12/2015 16:58

I'm not sure if that's the right word but I was in Sainsbury's today and the woman in the queue in front of me just looked 'expensive'.
She wasn't wearing anything remarkable - a leather jacket with a fur collar, skinny jeans and brown knee length boots but somehow she looked 'done' whereas I looked like a sack of spuds.
How to achieve that expensive look without the budget?

For a start you have to be young, slim, middle class, & good looking - the rest is easy.

PennyPants · 31/12/2015 10:06

I would say
Classic clothes in neutral colours in good fabrics in top condition.
Nice perfume.
Simple jewellery.
Really good footwear.
Hair skin nails and teeth immaculately maintained.
Not necessarily following the latest fashion.
Nothing frumpy or mumsy.
And an air of Je ne sais quoi.

BeaufortBelle · 31/12/2015 10:06

My daughter is only 5'2". She's very petite but looks effortlessly classy and upmarket in Next jeans and simple sweater or hoodie with ankle boots or trainers. An Oliver Bonas dress and she looks fabulous. I think the thick naturally blonde hair and classic features have something to do with it. OTH I am very biased.

MrsCampbellBlack · 31/12/2015 10:11

I think really most people who look expensive are wearing expensive clothes. I don't wear cheap clothes any more as the older I get and the more £££ I have then I'd rather spend it on well made clothes in nice fabrics.

I also think a bit of bling in the day is fine and actually rather nice.

But I don't get wanting to look expensive as an aim really - I'd rather look stylish personally.

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 10:49

yuck. no to the scarf. no to the stud earrings.

SisterNancySinatra · 31/12/2015 10:55

Since the 1980s I reckon there is a well groomed "model" look that some young women are good at , nice figure, nice highlights, but they always wear a foundation that is a bronze my colour and looks absolutely classy but wear resistant . I've never found that foundation , it is a mystery.

SisterNancySinatra · 31/12/2015 10:55

Not " my " colour . Just bronze

LaurieFairyCake · 31/12/2015 11:02

I think that bronze colour is weekly subtle St tropez fake tan with colour matched to the tan foundation

A very expensive look to keep up

JaceLancs · 31/12/2015 12:42

Subtle or no make up
Manicure with natural or neutral colours
Good quality shoes, boots, handbags
Make sure everything is clean and not in need of repair
Classic plain pieces with odd pattern or brighter colour thrown in
Natural fibres, de bobble when needed, iron where needed
I actually like a bit of bling and wear quite a bit of jewellery - but it's all real and mostly old
I prefer my 50 year old gold omega watch to any of the current designer favourite watches
Diamonds don't go out of fashion easily and never make me feel fat!!

BabyGanoush · 31/12/2015 12:53

I think classics like a fitted belted long camel coat are great for this. They also hide a multitude of sins.

I think overly done make up looks cheap, but others probably think it looks classy.

Tastes differ

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 12:55

camel doesn't suit everybody though. Maybe your classic colour is maroon, bottle green, navy or just stick with black.

I've never worn anything 'camel' in my life. I've seen some nice camel coats in max mara mind you, but no. Camel isn't for everybody.

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 12:58

while forthcoming posters are free with their opinions, what do you think of these earrings?

the hanging ones. I like them. I'm deciding between two pairs at the moment. One pair is alan ardiff.

very honest opinions totally welcome

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 13:00

I like the little owls ones best. I did fall in love with an alex monroe pair a while ago but they're not for sale any more.

I love alex monroe, alan ardiff, sabine lenz. But I'm not dripping with jewellery. I have none! ONE ring. I could treat myself. I should. Especially while sales are on.

Gatekeeper · 31/12/2015 13:02

I look dreadful in everything; I just can't look classy or sophisticated to save my life- just a big scruffbag!

BeaufortBelle · 31/12/2015 13:02

My daughter would like them. They are too young for me.

VintageDresses · 31/12/2015 13:03

Iike the earring but I don't think they are part of the look this thread is aiming for

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 13:04

ha ha very diplomatic.

NoMore314 · 31/12/2015 13:06

love these but they're a shocking price. Only for people who don't have to pretend they have money.

How to look 'expensive'
BeaufortBelle · 31/12/2015 13:12

I don't know what those are worth but you would have to pay me to wear them. Am wondering if they are "treasure trove"

LaurieFairyCake · 31/12/2015 13:18

The owl earrings are lovely and totally the sort of thing I wear

They are not elegant or expensive looking though

Longislandicetee · 31/12/2015 13:39

Studs (whether plain, diamond or pearl) are classic looking. The owl earrings are sort of the complete opposite - quirky. I would wear quirky earrings if i was going for a casual fun look as opposed to something understated and classic.

MrsCampbellBlack · 31/12/2015 13:53

I think a lot of what people are describing is classic as opposed to just expensive. I love Pippa Small and Monica Vinader jewellery - many of the earrings are drop and I think they look fab especially in the summer.

Actually I reckon it is a lot easier to look £££ in the winter - harder when you are wearing less clothes Wink

BeaufortBelle · 31/12/2015 13:53

I've just had a look at some diamond and ruby bumble bee earrings in Richard Ogden but forgot to look at the price. Cartier did lots of little insects in the 20s I think which had a renaissance about 20 years ago? Wallis Simpson had some and they were sold off. I never much liked the style and still don't. But I don't care much for Cartier - didn't they get involved with elephant polo in the 80s? Classy - not.

BeaufortBelle · 31/12/2015 13:56

Ha ha Mrs Campbell Black. I'm just getting dressed and won't tell you how much I'm worth with no clothes on Wink. Have just decided that I'll wear dark grey leggings and a teal tunic dress from Boden a few years ago. Will wear with leather knee boots and my dark grey below the knee Farhi coat.

UnDeuxTroisCatsSank · 31/12/2015 14:27

I agree the loafers, jeans, studs, silk scarf, expensive coat look described more than once on this thread is more classic than expensive.

I saw a woman in London a few days ago with perfectly coiffed blonde hair, huge dangly earrings, high heeled suede boots with a fringed edge, leather pencil skirt and a long beige (fake) fur gilet and she looked amazing, expensive and not sloaney.
