Going to the Royal Opera House for an evening performance. What on earth do I wear? Shock

Upper amphitheatre, Nutcracker - there will be lots of girls in their best princess dresses, adults it doesn't really matter. There will be quite a few head to toe Joules combos, several people in jeans straight of the street, a number of sparkly tops.

Really anything goes.

I always go in the stalls (fear of heights) and have felt very relaxed in a black skinny/ nice top combination.

Some of the people either there on work-related corporate hospitality or who maybe don't go very often do wear quite smart outfits (though seldom cocktail wear nowadays). I guess you might see more of these in the run-up to Christmas, as a PP mentions having seen 'most people' in the stalls dressed smartly last week. But it's by no means essential.

I think your idea of smart jeans and a nice shirt or blouse would be ideal.

PS and I don't really agree with the PP who said it's the one place you couldn't be overdressed.

oh wow - this production is amazing!! Francine Hayward is so good - is that her name? (Clara)

sorry to ignore your style point but it's just so good, please report back!

I notice fewer people dressing up but I tend to go after work anyway, and only about 2 a year as that's as often as I can afford, lol.

I go to the opera/theatre/ballet quite often (lucky me!) and have a few fail safe outfits from Dries Van Noten who is my go-to designer for occasions that require subtle artistic references ;). While I am on top of the theatrical stuff, i am not at all knowledgeable about opera and ballet - I'm just very fortunate that other people in my life are, and are kind enough to invite me to join them. So am a bit of an imposter really, and dressing the part makes me feel more courageous when I have to engage with people who understand all the references.

It's true there's no dress code these days, but the surroundings of the opera house are so sumptuous, it feels right to dress up! I also feel it's somehow respectful to the dancers to make an effort. We went last week, it's wonderful, enjoy!
