I use soap and water on my face every day - he waitrose essentials stuff
I don't have spots and blackheads
If I use a fancy cleanser I get blocked pores
I need something to dissolve the oil on my face and this works
It is just a marketing thing and I am sure if you have dry skin it isn't great either.

Artandco · 17/12/2015 06:57

I use dove soap. I don't use waterproof makeup so regular one just washes off with a face cloth. I have a load of face cloths so have a fresh one every morning and night

TheKitchenWitch · 17/12/2015 07:10

But doesn't the soap sting if it gets in your eyes? I use soap for all other washing, I love way it feels, but if I try washing my face with it it gets in my eyes a bit and hurts.
Face cleansers somehow don't sting even when they get in my eyes a bit.

SeasonalVag · 17/12/2015 07:23

I use olive oil
Rosehip oil for moisturizing

Artandco · 17/12/2015 07:28

No I don't use soap on my eyes just water. Just use soap on the rest of my face. I mainly wash any dirt off with the face cloth I think.

Ima friend who is a dermatologist says she and most ' celeb' clients she has only use water/ cloths and soap also, unlike media portrays. A £50 cleanser will do the same.
Then just a cheap moisturiser will do if it has the right ingredients

It's about the pH levels. This explains it. Everyone is different. Im not very good with soap & water. Simple wipes for me.

EmmaWoodlouse · 17/12/2015 08:10

If it doesn't make your skin feel dry it probably isn't making your skin dry. Be glad that soap and water works for you and you don't need anything fancy or expensive.

specialsubject · 17/12/2015 10:50

nothing, as long as it doesn't irritate your skin. It may not get off the serious chemicals in makeup, which is why you may need stronger removers if you use that.

nothing you put on your skin will affect the ageing process.

scaevola · 17/12/2015 10:59

If you look at the studies linked to the Futurederm article, they don't really support the content, or do so only tangentially.

For example, drying/irritating effect is based on a study looking at SLS concentrations, not soap.

The almost mystic, mentioned on many sites but never described let alone linked, study that shows even a single use of soap causes damage is mentioned in it too (not linked).

This is Bad Science.

You are fine to wash your face with soap. It's also fine to enjoy using other products, whether you believe in the hype or not.

FankEweVeryMuch · 17/12/2015 11:15

I use nothing but water 😱. My skin is at its worst when I use products on it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 17/12/2015 13:55

Soap makes the skin on my face feel tighter than a duck's bumhole. So uncomfortable.

If I run out of my usual cleanser I wash my face with olive oil rather than soap. So it's not a money thing.

HopefulAnxiety · 17/12/2015 21:30

To say 'it's just marketing' is nonsense when there are plenty of cheap cleansers out there that are much better for your skin. Coal tar soap on delicate facial skin! Ouch!

All soap is drying to my skin, including Dove. Any water-based cleansing method is, which is why I only use wipe-off cleansers.

How on earth can people wash non-tubing waterproof mascara off with just water? It is oil-based so needs an oil-based cleanser.

special sunscreen put on your skin definitely affects the ageing process.

Artandco · 17/12/2015 22:02

Hopefully- I only use regular mascara or tubing for this reason. Or have eye lashes tinted

specialsubject · 17/12/2015 22:05

sorry. Forgot the bleeding obvious in my post.

yes, sunscreen reduces UV-caused wrinkles.

retinol may have a tiny effect. Otherwise nothing, however French the name, makes any difference.

soap and water have been used for generations to get off muck. Makeup is sometimes designed to be soap proof, so needs something stronger.

ValiantMouse · 18/12/2015 00:33

I don't wear make up so don't need to remove it. I'll use whatever I pick up in the shower to wash my face- dove soap, or even shower gel. My skin never feels dry or tight.

FrustratedFrugal · 18/12/2015 05:33

I've been a daily soap user for years and it is great for my acne-prone skin. Here is a study that found that long-term soap use does not disrupt the skin pH.

I remove my makeup with micellar water and then use soap as a second cleanse - castile soap or black nigella soap. My skin adapted quickly and I rarely need moisturizer. Wouldn't recommend this to anyone who has atopic eczema, but I originally found soap when a SLS-based face wash triggered perioral exczema. The soap and water routine helped me to get over it.

amarmai · 18/12/2015 09:41

water and rubbing has been used for ever to clean clothes etc. No need for chemicals unless you are washing chemicals off. Forgot to say i do not use make up or emollients or-- so water and my hands work fine.

gastropod · 18/12/2015 15:58

Soap aggravates my skin and makes it feel dry and sore. Even just plain water - hot or cold - makes my skin feel tight and sensitive.
So using soap and water would be hell. Cheap cleanser or (at the moment) baby cleansing lotion suits me much better.

mercifulTehlu · 18/12/2015 16:21

If you put moisturiser on straight afterwards, I fail to see why it matters if your cleansing substance dries your skin. Surely removing grease and dirt, then putting a clean layer of oil/grease of some kind is what every method of cleansing and moisturising does anyway?

I have used everything from fancy cleansers to baby lotion to soap to clean my face. As long as I moisturise afterwards, the cleanser has made zero difference to the condition of my skin. Atm I wash with gentle soap at night and then use Nivea creme (blue pot). In the morning I just wash with water. Expensive skincare products are a complete con imo. They are nice to use, look pretty and smell nice, but that's about it.

squoosh · 18/12/2015 16:26

Well oil cleansers have greatly improved my skin. I used to have to slather moisturiser on after cleansing, now I only need a dab.

Branleuse · 18/12/2015 16:34

if your skin doesnt mind it, its fine.

I always use bars of soap for face and body, and theres nothing wrong with my skin

hollinhurst84 · 18/12/2015 20:33

I wear a shit load of makeup so it doesn't shift it. Oil based for me all the way!
