Really dry, frizzy hair - please help!

I've always had quite nice hair - very thick, slightly wavy but could be blow dried straight. I'm now more than 50% grey and have to use home dye every 3 weeks or so to keep on top of the grey and my hair is becoming really lifeless, dry and frizzy. I know that the dying probably doesn't help - but please don't suggest letting it go grey, I'm only 41 and my mum was really grey by this age and looked 15 years older than I do with brown hair. I can't afford to get it done at the hairdressers. I wash about 3 times a week with L'Oreal sulphate-free shampoo for dry/coloured hair (switched to sulphate-free 2 years ago after years of problems with ecxma on my hands and it cleared up overnight!) I use an argan oil conditioner and Frizz-Eeze before blow drying. My hair is now so dry and crispy and I don't know what to do with it! I using Castings home colourant - is there something gentler that will still cover a lot of grey?

I have no advice, but I am the same age with the same problem. Not dying my hair is not an option!

This is good

Also the tube of what old ladies put in their hair is fantastic! I can't remember the name but it's been around for over 40 years that I can remember!

thedevilinmyshoes · 26/11/2015 16:07

Redken Frizz Dismiss is really good, also their blue one (Redken Extreme? There's a shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in treatment called Anti-Snap which is incredible) I alternate between the two ranges and have human hair at last! Frizz Dismiss smells much better than the antisnap but not, I think, quite as good.

TimeToMuskUp · 26/11/2015 16:12

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is great as a pre-wash treat, and Kerastase strengthening range (the green bottles) are also lovely.

Readysteadyknit · 26/11/2015 16:20

tate the stuff old ladies put on their hair is vitapoint - it costs £2 in SuperDrug and is really good.

I also, use Aussie Miracle oil www.boots.com/en/Aussie-3-Miracle-Oil-Reconstructor-for-Damaged-Hair-100ml_1693809/ instead of conditioner on wet hair.

Didiusfalco · 26/11/2015 16:27

How long is your hair? mine was quite long and frizzy. I had it cut to chin length and it looks an awful lot healthier, and of course easier to colour.

paisley256 · 26/11/2015 16:36

Coconut oil overnight and it's frizz free.

Wombat87 · 26/11/2015 16:42

If you find coconut oil too heavy, use sweet almond oil. I find that to be better and didn't leave residue. I've got bleached hair. Leave that stuff in a few times week overnight and it does magical stuff. I now only do it once a week.

Also, be wary of shampoos and conditioners. I use the Wella Essence range as its sulphate and paraben free. Silicone shampoos will coat your hair (Pantene) and make it look and feel nice.. But it does very little to nourish hair. And stay away from Aussie stuff!!

I've dropped right back in all the products I use. Wella essence shampoo, conditioner and leave in spray. Almond oil and the essence hair masque once a week. Best thing I ever did for my hair. Good luck!

Hi
These have helped me
Only use very gentle dye - herbatint and Daniel Field are good.
Be warned Daniel Field come up far darker than other dyes and only use the genuine site.
But they leave the hair in a lovely condition.
Do not use sulphates or paraben or silicone in your hair products.
Deep condition with a natural oil.
Wash the hair less and use loads of conditioner
Good luck

Hair oil before blow drying has made a huge difference to my now non frizzy hair.

bigbuttons · 26/11/2015 19:55

Since I've completely stopped using anything that coats/sticks to the hair shaft my hair has been frizz free( it used to be horribly frizzy). I will now only use faith in nature stuff. It has transformed my hair.

iwannadancewithsomebody · 26/11/2015 21:34

Herbal essence bee strong is fab.

They also do a deep condition mask.

This was a miracle worker for me. Along with matching shampoo. I used the mask as a conditioner for a month and every evening put argan oil on my hair before bed. Transformed hair in a couple of months.

Sunshineandwaves · 27/11/2015 04:03

I am the same age as you, and have by the sounds of it, exactly the same hair type. I have seen a vast improvement in my hair's condition since I started using pure Argan oil. I put it on before I blow dry. It also works as a heat protector. When I colour I just do the roots to reduce damage.

NeededANameChangeAnyway · 27/11/2015 10:43

Same problem. Frizzy wavy dry hair. I think getting a few inches off the bottom as that's where the worst of the dryness seems to be might help. I've switched to a paraben free shampoo which seems to help. Doesn't foam much in the shower so I think I use too much.....

Sweetsweetjane · 28/11/2015 00:05

Marking for reference. 43 with crunchy greying dreary hair.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/11/2015 00:47

Ooh watching.

I have dyed short hair (done every 3 weeks by myself) so it takes its toll (though my hair is cut every 6 weeks, short style)

I will try the Lush R&B I reckon. I don;t like oily things but with the colder weather (and the potentially damaging effects of dye) my hair feels a tad rough Sad

FizzyBubbly · 28/11/2015 09:19

WRT leaving coconut or sweet almond oil on overnight how do you apply them? Specifically wet or dry hair? Dry with a hairdryer after or sleep with a towel on your pillow?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/11/2015 09:26

Anything oily I'd put into dry hair (my hair is 2" long at most) after rubbing onto my palms. Work it through well.
Then a clingfilm hat (nice ) and a hair turban.

It keeps it where it should be. But don't think more is more.
I've used the solid coconut oil like this.

Then use a neat shampoo on dry hair in the morning to prewash.

AfroPuffs · 28/11/2015 09:52

Can you reduce the frequency of your shampoo? It just strips the hair of oils, so if your lifestyle allows i would wash it a bit less. Moisturise with oils at least once a week and also get some fatty acids into you...salmon, avocado etc to give you a boost.

AfroPuffs · 28/11/2015 09:54

Oh and after conditioning, while hair is wet rub in a small amount of coconut oil and then dry as normal.

fififolle · 28/11/2015 10:10

Kerastase elixir ultime had mad a massive difference to my hair.

Wombat87 · 28/11/2015 23:37

Fizzy I put mine on dry hair before I go to bed. I've got shoulder length hair. Sleep time is when your cells regenerate and renew, so it does help absorb all the goodness. I spritz a bit of leave in conditioner through for good measure afterwards also as Sweet Almond acts as a carrier oil.

Wombat87 · 28/11/2015 23:39

And I don't sleep on a towel. Almond oil is a bit lighter than coconut and doesn't leave much of a trace

mathanxiety · 29/11/2015 05:55

Stop blow drying and switch to conditioner only for washing.

Check out the 'curly girl method'.

You may even find you have curly, not wavy hair.
