Size 18/20 - 5ft10. Aged 32. What the hell should I be wearing?

I'm in a massive rut. I kondoed my clothes about 6 months ago and I'm now wearing the same 3 tops on a loop with black trousers. Outside of work, it's jeans t-shirt and trainers because I literally have nothing else. I usually shop at asos, m&s or debenhams. I don't have a massive budget but I could manage maybe £200 on a few new bits.

Does anyone have some time on a Saturday night to point me in the right direction?

I love this:

I am concerned with length though. That model is 5ft8. All Joe Brown's models are 5ft7. Aren't models supposed to be tall? I'm worried about everything being too short.

I don't think I want to go for knitted stuff. I work in an office that is like a sauna. I need light layers or I'm ready to pass out.

Do you know about these op

I don't always want to wear black opaques and I found nude 100 denier tights hard to find.

Anyway I got a pair of these and I think they are brilliant. Virtually indestructible. I got another three pairs too.

Must try some coloured ones too.

Dowser · 21/11/2015 22:59

Hmmm, model is two ins shorter than you. It might be a bit short.....but with leggings....

notbread · 21/11/2015 23:14

I have ordered that dress from New Look, plus some tan chelsea boots.

I will report back when they arrive.

I can relate to the height challenge though no experience buying in your size so my advice isn't very specific.

I would say if you don't have a lot to spend very often you should not focus on throw away fashion. It won't wash well and if you are a hot person and in a hot workplace you'd be better off with natural fibres where possible.

Maybe you would find some stuff in boden store on ebay

They do big sizes in long length and less acrylic etc.

Sainsbury clothes are now online so you could order from home and try on there rather than in a supermarket. They have a lot of dresses for around the £20 mark which look office appropriate so shopping there really would help your money go further. Suspect the lengths will be longer than the new look tunic you've bought.

I'm actually a cold person in a very hot office but will take on board the advice on natural fabrics. To be fair, I don't really pay attention to fabrics. I used to be a size 26 so 'something that fits' was my only concern for so long.

I'm 5ft 10 and a 16/18 (busty)
I wear a lot of skinny jeans with converse or boots, v neck tops and layers, usually a longer vest under shorter tops. Often a blazer on top
Dresses I wear loads, always with waist belts, in winter with boots and leggings (worn as tights) then with sandals in summer
Two pics attached of a winter and summer outfit!
Places I find stuff - asos curve (they do long length), Boden (same), sainsburys, Dorothy Perkins tall range. Collectif and lady voluptuous if I have money

Dowser - I have that Bardot spot one!

Sorry that read badly... Despite being like you a chilly person I don't fare well in acrylic fabrics and I wouldn't invest heavily in them if you have limited means.

Losing 3/4 dress sizes is amazing. I do wonder if you still have a bit of the anything that fits mentality as you haven't really said anything about your body type and best features. In line with your kondoing you need to buy stuff that brings you joy and I think that'll be down to getting stuff that really fits and flatters. The 5ft 10 aspect brings its own extra challenge but if you have, for instance, long legs it would be great to show them off.

From a height perspective I get good stuff in
Hush (nice long sleeves but the dresses are too short)
Baukjen
Anything Scandinavian where people are taller on average e.g. Inwear, day birger, second day, ilse Jacobsen etc
Premium denim will typically have a longer inside leg and tell you what it is
Top shop tall/ top shop denim is good

mysteryfairy · 22/11/2015 15:43

E.g. Do you have an enviable hour glass figure like hollinghurst? If you do copy everything she wears!

Notbread · 22/11/2015 19:47

I absolutely do. I struggle to look at myself and see someone who looks half decent.

Although my figure isn't quite as enviable, it's not completely dissimilar to hollinghurst. The clothes in pic 3 are something I would wear but with casual trainers. I really need boots!

Thank you Blush
I dress to disguise some of it. From the front I am hourglass but I have v flat bum and a tummy as well as being busty so floaty/not fitted stuff doesn't work on me at all
It really is working what suits and I have only cracked it the past few years.
V necks, waist definition are my friends
High or roll necks look horrendous on me

Dowser · 22/11/2015 22:40

Yes nice figure hollinhurst. I've got 5 dresses winging their way to me so had better hold off for now...re the Bardot one!

4 are for summer that I just couldn't resist at those sale prices!
