I was thinking of getting some new makeup, it's my birthday on Friday and I thought I might go to one of the counters in selfridges and get some advice. I keep hearing loads about Charlotte Tilbury so thought I might try there. Does anyone us any of there products I suppose really I would be looking at concealer, foundation and any other things that might make my skin look brighter.

the aggressive marketing where the money was spent was to pay high end influencers on social media & blogs etc to give it a cult following to drive sales

The sudden appearance of CT products on every well known beauty blog and vlog is what put me off. It seemed too good to be true and was a bit blatant. Maybe if someone only reads CH or watches Fleur de Force or whoever they wouldn't notice but it was everyone at the exact same time. No products are that good.

Enjolrass · 20/11/2015 19:28

Thanks flip

Taking dd shopping for make up soon she has just started faffing with mine, will definitely take a look at the scandaleyes Smile

flippinada · 20/11/2015 19:48

You're welcome Enjol. I honestly think they are great - not just good for the price, I honestly think they are as good as many high end brands. Have fun shopping with your DD!

Waggle yes they were everywhere at once, weren't they. You can tell when a product is doing the rounds cos it pops up on all the big blogs/vlogs.

Wagglebees · 20/11/2015 20:40

Flip It's a shame as once they were good for ideas and reliable for advice, but it gets a bit Hmm when the third 'beauty haul' or blog post has the same stuff in it.

flippinada · 20/11/2015 21:44

Yes, I still read/watch but I reckon they're best taken with a pinch of salt. Some aren't much better than adverts.

Lottapianos · 20/11/2015 22:04

Thanks flip, for NARS and Ester Lauder recommendations - they're on my list list too!

flippinada · 20/11/2015 22:22

You're welcome Lotta. If you're going to buy an expensive lippie, you want to get your money's worth!

HopefulAnxiety · 20/11/2015 23:23

Rimmel Scandaleyes liners are great, but also Barry M waterproof gel pencils and Maybelline Color Tattoo (use it as liner or shadow, it's gel type stuff).

AddToBasket · 20/11/2015 23:28

Those eye pencils were really disappointing. The lids just never stayed on and the pencils dried out pretty much within a fortnight. Total crap.

Flippinada, do you know which of the scandaleyes match the CT colours? The colours were good, the product was just rubbish.

bigbuttons · 21/11/2015 08:20

As far as eyeliners go now I only ever use the black powder kohl I got from Marrakech in the summer. So much easier to use, just wish it wasn't always black Wink

flippinada · 21/11/2015 10:36

Addto I only have two of the CT ones, the champagne diamonds (which is awful) and the bronzed garnet - bronzed garnet is very similar to the scandaleyes bad girl bronze shadow pencil. They're not exactly the same, I would say bg is a bit redder.

TurnipCake · 21/11/2015 10:53

CT products are massively overpriced for what is IMO, a fairly average line in terms of product, the packaging is poor quality and outdated

Kitten flick eyeliner - smears everywhere

Lipsticks - no lasting power and bleed v quickly

Colour chameleon - OK, dry out quite quickly, other better quality products on the market

I have an eyeshadow quad which is nice, but regretting I didn't go to Tom Ford instead.

Caroline Hirons was surprisingly polite in her critique of the 'Magic' cream, perhaps if she didn't have a previous vested interest, I'm guessing she would have ripped it to shreds.

ninared · 21/11/2015 12:43

following on from this (my friend is a beauty PR and tells me much stuff after a glass of wine ) and to give an example of how these beauty PRs work with brands like Charlotte Tilbury and similar to what the CT team did with their PR & marketing to get into influencers and social
media marketing to launch Charlotte Tilbury line is the recent influx of Bio Effect coverage

at the mo lots of beauty bloggers & influencers are covering Bio Effect and Caroline Hirons etc and others are blogging from Iceland courtesy of the brand with a soft sell of some of the Bio Effects products - CH just happening to have the products she is unofficially promoting with her in her 'skincare kit' for her trip which she videos - - - same products had recently crept into her latest vlogs/social media CH gives a large percentage of her latest video vlog to Bio Effect but no disclosure this is similar to how the CT campaign went - big spend of influencers soft selling - gone are the days we got make up ads in between articles in magazines and we knew it was a paid advertisement ... Now we're led to believe our bloggers really like the products and spent their money on them when it's influenced by marketing spend

I'm bothering to post this as I was a long time beauty blogger fan and spent much money and time on what they recommended until my friend who works in PR/marketing and was on the Chatlotte Tilbury launch/campaign opened my eyes to just how much these bloggers are getting paid to quietly endorse products without having to disclose

you make your own choices and good luck to them to make a living but good to know it's not all coochy coo as it seems

Tarrarra · 21/11/2015 12:49

I have the magic foundation and not only does it give great coverage without feeling heavy, it stays on. So much so, that it was still on this morning after I forgot to take me make up off last night Blush

Enjolrass · 21/11/2015 16:56

I really do rate the foundations. It stays on all day and feels nice.

I need to look into these cheaper brands though. Dd is just starting to get into make up and I am sure she would rather have lots of cheaper items, than a few expensive ones.

I am a sucker for the expensive brands and ashamed to say I never buy Rimmel etc. I think I need to review my make choices, thanks for showing me the light ladies Wink

Lottapianos · 21/11/2015 18:24

Enjolrass, I do recommend trying some of the cheaper brands. Rimmel, Bourjois and L'Oreal are excellent IME, Sleek blushers are fabulous and Maybelline also gets much love on here. Have fun!

Enjolrass · 21/11/2015 18:33

lotta thank you may start a new thread asking for recommendations.

Maybe dd getting into make up will open a whole new world for me. My bank balance breath a sigh of relief Grin

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 21/11/2015 21:43

The CT brand is mainly social media whoring on a large scale.

flippinada · 22/11/2015 20:14

They've definitely used social media to their advantage. Of course CT being a successful MUA will have helped too.

Having watched the 'in the bathroom' vid with Sali Hughes I can see why people would get caught up in the hype. She's incredibly passionate and enthusiastic about make up, it's quite infectious.
