DONT LISTEN TO HER

the boots looked terrible. They made your legs look bigger and just shit.
DONT wear them around the house first to get them to loosen up, they didnt fit or suit

get a cool ankle boot instead.
And get a new daughter

Brenda I hope you're also worried about the teenager who ended up with the brown nylon cowl neck on Christmas Day Grin

BrendaandEddie · 09/11/2015 13:46

ALWAYS

My daughter is honest , she takes one look and if its unflattering its an instant 'nope' ..she comes up behind me in shops and mutters into my ear whilst i fondle something admiringly ...'nope'

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/11/2015 13:54

I don't think I was battering older women, Queen - as I said, I was then in my forties and was shopping at Kew, so why would I be bashing them? I was trying to point out to the mother of a teenager that she might find more success in a shop aimed more at teeneagers than the middle aged. I wouldn't dream of making my 18 yo try on frumpy nightmares at Kew or the equivalent now it's gone, and I was trying to beckind to the poor girl and maybe help the mother out a bit as well. Sprinkling fashion dust around.
I'm now 52, btw.
Anyway, long cardigan woman going to be popping up all over the place soon.

lurkingfromhome · 09/11/2015 14:02

I totally get it, Shotgun. My teenage years were blighted by my mum and gran who were on a two-person campaign to force me into "nice" clothes and "none of that cheap rubbish". Every shopping trip ended in shouting and tears as they inevitably tried to force me into sensible polyester trousers and old-lady raincoats from M&S while my peers were off down Chelsea Girl stocking up on tat.

All very well looking "nice" and wearing "none of that cheap rubbish" when you get bullied mercilessly for looking like your own mother when you're 15 ...

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/11/2015 14:07
Sad
Badders123 · 09/11/2015 14:09

I only have one thing to say.
NO ONE suits a poncho.
That's is all.

lurkingfromhome · 09/11/2015 14:11

Haha, that sounded a bit "poor me", didn't it? Honestly, I have got over it, although it has left me in no doubt that I will wear skinny jeans and heels until my dying day Grin

80sWaistcoat · 09/11/2015 14:15

That sounds horribly similar to my teenage years - my mother kitted me out all in M&S beige to go on a school trip to Italy in the 80s. Beige...

I think she'd just watched Out of Africa to be fair.

lurkingfromhome · 09/11/2015 14:29

Yes! I got taken to M&S to get kitted out for a school trip to France in the 80s and I believe beige slacks were purchased for "dressy nights out". Obviously I fitted right in when strolling down the streets of Paris ...

80sWaistcoat · 09/11/2015 14:33

I had a beige button through A line skirt. Actually probably quite trendy now. With a beige buttoned up shirt with long sleeves. And I believe there may have been some beige elasticated waist trousers too.

I can't wear beige - I disappear if I wear beige...

80sWaistcoat · 09/11/2015 14:35

Their was the time she bought me a pink corduroy trouser suit with a white ruffled shirt. I believe that may be where the inspiration for Austin Powers came from.

I'd have loved someone quietly coming up behind and saying 'nope'.

TychosNose · 09/11/2015 14:41

Oh brenda I hope you never see me and my dm out shopping. You'd die.

We have a terribly disfunctional relationship and essentially hate each other so I have always tried to get her to buy things that look shit and I'm pretty sure shes done the same to me.

We don't shop together often.

lurkingfromhome · 09/11/2015 14:42

I tell you, if someone had come up to my mum and said 'nope' when she was making me agree to a beige towelling M&S sweatshirt for the school disco I'd have bloody hugged them.

Haha, I've also just remembered the summer in between school and university when she asked me in all seriousness if I'd like "something like your school skirt, but maybe in brown" for starting university. Black, you see, would have been too racy, but brown was "nice". At least by that age I could just refuse ...

God this thread is like therapy Grin

ShelaghTurner · 09/11/2015 14:44

I'm fat and very sensitive about it. And believe people can wear what the fuck they like. But if someone whispered to me in a shop that what I was trying on didn't do me any favours and what about trying this, I'd be delighted! I need loads of help with what I wear. Mostly I look like a bag of washing so any tips are gratefully received.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 09/11/2015 15:34

Lurking, glad you pulled through! Grin

BrendaandEddie · 09/11/2015 15:57

a crazy Mexican suits a poncho, so its FINE - don't worry

BrendaandEddie · 09/11/2015 16:25

bishboschone · 09/11/2015 16:53

I have chunky legs despite being a size 10. Knee high boots look shite on me , it's a fact. I wear ugg length boots or converse . Much more flattering.

My mother had way more style than I have ever given her credit for, I think. I remember being 7ish in the early 80s and she put me in a blue and red boiler suit, block blue but with red turn-ups on the arms and front bit. Looking back it must have been pretty fashion-forward, but at my school I just got bullied mercilessly for wearing stuff like that. Beige I could have coped with to be honest!

BrendaandEddie · 09/11/2015 17:04

sexy!

My son looked at my poncho, said ' you look like an evil Mexican'

This is exactly the sort of thing my DH says
