I need a really nourishing lip balm

My lips are dry and chapped and I'm in desperate need of a good lip balm to help them. Any ideas?

Another vote for blistex, the intensive moisture one morning and night then during day if I feel like it I add some tinted Vaseline on top

shovetheholly · 26/10/2015 17:22

I get terrible chapped lips when the weather changes (being outdoors a lot doesn't help). The one lip balm I absolutely cannot live without is this:

www.lookfantastic.com/melvita-apicosma-repairing-lip-balm-4.5ml/10567384.html

I can't rave about it enough. I need one application not repeat applications where you end up eating half the stick and I am sorted. It smells kind of beeswaxy and it has quite a rough texture which (surprisingly) seems to drive it deeper into your skin. Brilliant stuff and not too £££ either.

Allgunsblazing · 26/10/2015 17:28

Nuxe miel here too. M&S does them :)

CuttedUpPear · 26/10/2015 17:44

Carmex is the best for me - I work outside pretty much all year and can't be without it.

sksk · 26/10/2015 17:45

Body shop hemp lip balm.

sksk · 26/10/2015 17:45

Or Blistex cream.

Doobigetta · 26/10/2015 19:09

Avoid anything with mineral oils or petroleum jelly in. They aren't absorbed by your skin, so they just sit on top of it, and do absolutely nothing to help- they just create a barrier. Burt's Bees is the only one I've found that contains neither.

Indecisivejo · 26/10/2015 19:24

Burts bees made my lips awful, as did all natural ones I tried

bluebutterfly29 · 26/10/2015 20:46

Avene lip balm is amazing. I also use just plain coconut oil on my lips before I go to sleep.

Wolfiefan · 26/10/2015 20:48

Nivea soothe and protect doesn't aggravate my sensitive skin.
Paw paw ointment is richer.

FrustratedFrugal · 26/10/2015 21:48

3rd Nuxe Reve de Miel. Eucerin Aquaphor too.

SixtyFootDoll · 26/10/2015 21:51

Carmex, I use the cream in a tube.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/10/2015 06:17

Carmex.

My lips were so bad that they bled in the night, and I had to constantly re-apply during the day.

Then I read two things- the first, that many so-called "balms" will have the opposite effect; they will superficially soothe and moisturise, but actually, underneath are making them even drier (Vaseline, 8 Hour Cream (Vaseline with marketing Wink) and most of the Nivea etc ones fall into that category if the ingredients are analysed (apparently, I'm not an expert, I just read up on them because I was desperate)

The ones that are full of nice things (Nuxe, L'Occitane etc) will moisturise but won't cure chronically chapped lips. (and very very overpriced for very simple ingredients, smearing olive oil on your lips will do essentially the same)

Carmex and (IIRC) the original pink coloured Chapstick both contain (IIRC) salicylic acid, which is why there is the initial tingling which then soothes. Your lips are exfoliated very gently while the ingredients do their stuff.

Within one week of Carmex my lips were transformed. That was about 3 yrs ago, and like pps, I'm never without now.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/10/2015 06:59

Carmex doesn't really work for me and definitely not any Vaseline type ones.

The kiehls matt one is good for boys/children as not too shiney on the lips.

PetiteBateau · 27/10/2015 07:24

Vaseline rosy lips

EveWornOut · 27/10/2015 07:32

I like Eve Lom's Kiss Mix. It's very moisturising and the slight sheen looks good instead of lipstick.

Cerseirys · 27/10/2015 07:38

I avoid Carmex and Blistex as they have camphor and/or menthol which can be irritating - that's what makes your lips tingle! I was using a balm from Holland and Barrett called Crazy a Rumours but it started drying out my lips, as did the Burts Bees one I was using. So I've gone back to good old Vaseline (albeit the tin with added cocoa butter) and that seems to be working. There's a lot of misconceptions and myths around about petroleum jelly but when out and about in the cold weather you do need some sort of barrier on your lips and Vaseline does the trick!

Sparkletastic · 27/10/2015 07:43

Nuxe Reve de Miel. Most end up drying my lips without constant reapplication. This used at night keeps my lips in great condition.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/10/2015 07:45

I think as with many things you need to mix it up and use different ones. I find my lips/hands get used to certain balms and creams and then they don't work as well.

orlakielyimnot · 27/10/2015 07:50

I've lived by carmex my whole life. I bought some EA8hr cream and was given a tube of that lip balm. It's no better than vaseline.

SoloPolo · 27/10/2015 10:34

Thanks all. Lots of great suggestions.

I've been using carmex which has worked well before but I'm having to apply it constantly and my lips are still chapped. I pulled a bit of dry skin off last night and they bleed, so Nuxe is next on the list.

sksk · 29/10/2015 08:24

I also used a Nivea one in a tin- maybe one of the previous posters mentioned it. I was surprised it worked. Best of luck!

mowglik · 29/10/2015 08:58

I have the worst chapped dry and flaky lips and have tried so many options. Settled on:
Nuxe reve de miel though I reserve for night time use as it turns my lips a bit white!
Elizabeth Arden 8 hour lip thing (looks like a lipstick) good for when lips need healing + moisture
Favourite nighttime combo though is palmers solid cocoa butter followed by Vaseline to seal in

Favourite daytime option is lip fusion lip plump.

mowglik · 29/10/2015 08:59

orla I find the EA tube thing worlds apart from Vaseline but I guess you have to try things to see what works for you! If I have sore lips from being out in the cold this heals them overnight.

AliciaMayEmory · 29/10/2015 10:59

I was given the 8 hour lip balm (in a little pot) and since using it I've gone from numerous applications of lip balm (Vaseline or boots own brand usually!) to every other day. It really has made a huge difference to my chapped lips. I think, like most beauty products, we all find products that work wonders for us but on other will have little effect. I tried all lip balm and treatments over the last 30 years and nine have ever had a lasting effect, but I've now found my solution! I hope you can find yours from all of these suggestions.
