New York vs London Style

bluebutterfly29 · 24/10/2015 13:31

I am moving from London to New York next weekend and I am editing down the clothing that I want to bring (I have posted about this in another thread).

But this got me thinking, what makes London style different from New York style? I have never been and have no idea what real people (outside of American fashion magazines) really wear.

And outside of clothing, how does New York beauty differ from London? Do people in New York where more makeup, etc?

Thanks everyone!

On a thread ages ago I remember someone who lived in the US said the women usually in NY were well groomed:

Hair cut well and glossy
Nails neat and never with chipped polish
Eyebrows maintained

She said this was as important as clothing.

I can't find the thread or I'd link to it.

So jealous, I'd love to move to NY Envy Grin

Having lived in both I support what thecatawhiskers says

in my experience only ... New York women (i.e. That is Manhattan for me) were extraordinarily well groomed - manicure every week, hair well cut and always neat, no roots showing - ever, clean well polished shoes, matching handbags, tailored coats, very nice accessories (gloves hats scarfs); clothes always dry leaned / well maintained, etc

They are big in having different shoes to get to work and then changing into "office" shoes (mind you in the snow this makes loads of sense).

I always felt like something the cat dragged in in comparison Grin

Oh and assuming you are English ?? Do t underestimate the cultural differences ... We might all speak English but it is very different culturally

In my experience Americans don't do sarcasm and don't tend to embrace it (with edge cases obviously) - not knowing this can land you in hot water

Also initially they tend to be very polite and not share personal information until you know someone very very well - I learnt to be able to talk a lot about light topics to keep the conversation going - steer away from anything controversial or personal to start with - no talk of gay marriage, no politics, no guns, no religion .... Best advice I got was to read/listen to the sports headlines each morning so you can say "did you see the game last night ? What about [insert some feat / statistic / fact] ?

Not sure I could maintain this though!

Get yourself a big CZ Rock as a lot of importance attached to this!?

Grooming

Or opt out so they put it down to your quirky English ways.

Thanks everyone. I am already exhausted thinking about how I am going to need to up my beauty game. I like to look good and I have a love of beauty products but I hate spending my free time on things like manicures.

What do women in New York typically wear for night out or a date night?

I think this is the thread mentioned upthread.

Full of fascinating UK v USA comparisons. Engagement rings are key apparently!
