How do you clean your makeup brushes?

Especially my foundation and stippling brushes. They are caked with foundation and hot water and soap doesn't seem to shift it. Any suggestions and also how often?
Thanks.

Surgical spirit works well. I just do mine when I remember, or they look really revolting.

BubsandMoo · 24/10/2015 10:50

I use castille soap. I like Dr Bonner's. Use it for all sorts.

BubsandMoo · 24/10/2015 10:51

Put a drop of essential oil in it sometimes too so they smell luffly Smile

allwineismine · 24/10/2015 10:53

Baby shampoo, they're nice, soft and smell lovely. But I tend to clean mine almost every day, mainly because I think any trace of yesterday's foundation smells revolting on the brush.

AbiBranning · 24/10/2015 10:54

Baby shampoo too.

Annarose2014 · 24/10/2015 11:03

Best thing in the world is cleansing oil. You can get pretty cheap ones in Boots nowadays. You massage it in dry, then rinse off and let me tell you, it'd take tar off them.

Most of the time I just use whatever hand soap is on the sink, but sometimes you have to bring out the big guns.

Annarose2014 · 24/10/2015 11:04

Btw, go into Primark and buy their spritz bottle of brush cleaner. It stops them getting bad in between washing days.

allwineismine · 24/10/2015 11:12

Oooh never heard of that Primark stuff. Need to give it a try.

Florin · 24/10/2015 11:20

Baby shampoo

Only1scoop · 24/10/2015 11:24

Baby shampoo
Til you get the gunk out and rinse clear.
Then a tiny tiny drop of dettol or savlon and then a huge rinse.

Annarose2014 · 24/10/2015 11:35

Its fairly new. It obvs doesn't deep clean them but keeps the grot at bay till you can get around to washing them.

BubsandMoo · 24/10/2015 11:36

What's in it Annarose?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/10/2015 11:58

I got a spray bottle of Superdrug B. for DD to clean her brushes.
Spray, wipe on the cloth supplied, dry.
£6 reduced from £10 at the moment

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/10/2015 12:01

Ooh and dry them flat (we put them on the window sill with the brush heads hanging over the edge) not upright or you get water in the ferrule (and you don't want that to happen, do ya? ) Wink

MadGrumblyGnome · 24/10/2015 14:19

Like the idea of essential oils.

When mine get caked with foundation and hand soap won't fully clean them, washing up liquid often does the trick.

123Jump · 24/10/2015 18:55

I use Fairy liquid and warm water. However, I do mine quite regularly.

randomcatname · 24/10/2015 19:52

I shove mine in the dishwasher. Grin

ExasperatedAlmostAlways · 24/10/2015 20:09

Dont use fairy liquid it dissolves the glue and then the bristles fall out.

Baby shampoo is good.

Miz10 · 24/10/2015 20:22

No7 brush cleaner or baby shampoo if I've run out.

Libitina · 24/10/2015 22:08

Australian Bodycare tea tree soap. Swish them round a sink of soapy water, rinse until clear and leave on a towel laid out flat to air dry.

orlakielyimnot · 24/10/2015 23:06

I have two, they each take half a week and then get washed on weekends.I use whatever hand soap is on the sink. A pump into the palm of my hand brush the soap until it's dirty, rinse and repeat until the soap stays soap colour! Takes about aminute.

ZacharyQuack · 24/10/2015 23:26

I use baby shampoo and wash at least weekly. I've got quite a few brushes so have backups to use when others are drying.

I've heard that a 50:50 mixture of dishwashing liquid and olive oil are good for really mucky brushes, but I've never tried it.

I use a homemade brush cleaner for spot cleaning:
??1 cup distilled water (I use filtered)
1/4 cup isopropyl alcohol
1/2 tablespoon dishwashing liquid
1/2 tablespoon baby shampoo
1 tablespoon spray leave in conditioner

Mix and put in spray bottle. Spray onto paper towel and rub brush. I only use this with synthetic brushes, as I'm worried that the alcohol will dry out natural bristles.

I wouldn't put makeup brushes in the dishwasher, or otherwise get any part other than the bristles wet, as the glue holding the bristles in place might get damaged.

If you can get your hands on some (ebay is your best bet) then the Daiso brush cleaner is magical. I had tried everything else and I managed to get my hands of this. It sells out within days in the stores. It made the brushes look brand new and cleaned them in seconds. It's witchcraft I tell you!
