Washing cashmere

Need help - got all my winter woollies out some need freshening after having been packed away in attic (low on wardrobe space)
Tried washing on hand wash wool cycle and whilst not ruined didn't wash well and came out with powder residue in blotches
Thought overloaded so tried again with single item which did same
Then I realised I've changed washing machine since last winter - my old one washed all wool safely

Any suggestions - I wondered about trying again with liquid or lux flakes

I have bought some Eco balls but am worried they might ruin things - has anyone ever tried them on delicates?

I know it's not really S + B but more traffic in here and it is related

Thanks

I hand wash mine with soak. Google it, you just put a bit in cool water, then yep - soak and dry ( twist mine in a towel and dry flat)

Gwynfluff · 23/10/2015 18:10

I also use soak. If washing in the machine, you need a delicate cycle and woolite or other liquid wool and silk detergent

faustina · 23/10/2015 18:29

I use the silk cycle on my washing machine. A cycle which hardly spins it is what's needed. I use waitrose delicates liquid. Never had a problem

I do the same as Faustina and have never had a problem either. I prefer liquid as you don't get the powder residue.

getoffthattabletnow · 23/10/2015 21:01

I use the really delicate 30 degree wash and Woolite.I then spin for 2-3mins to fluff up and then hang on a padded hanger.Admittedly my cashmere is more Tk Maxx rather than Brora but I've been doing this for 3 years and it really works.

Fozzleyplum · 23/10/2015 22:58

I use Eucalan, which is a non-rinse wash for cashmere. www.eucalan.com
Once I've soaked it, I spin it and dry it over the radiator or bannisters. I know you're supposed to dry cashmere flat on a towel, but it seems such a faff and my Brora comes to no harm washed and dried like this.

Handwash programme, 20°c, spinspeed 1200, liquid washing agent.. I put good stuff in the dryer on the wool or silk cycle and finish off over radiators, with a teatowel between, if delicate.

Coastingit · 23/10/2015 23:40

1200 is the fastest spin on my machine, would that be ok?

Lurking for tips - I bought my first cashmere jumper this year - a bargain £40 from Boden EBay outlet. It's so soft and warm and I'll undoubtedly trash it when I wash it.

ThatsHowYouGetAnts · 24/10/2015 00:02

I have always just done mine on the wool cycle with Woolite, Ecover Delicates or (currently) Waitrose Delicates liquid. Never had a problem, they come up lovely.

Notoedike · 24/10/2015 09:08

Cold wool wash with Tresemme shampoo. Works just fine.

Skippedthelightfandango · 24/10/2015 09:13

If they aren't mucky but just need freshening then a hang on the line on a blustery day works wonders.

A cold tumble with a bounce sheet works well too.

I do mine like this all the time because any trace of dust makes me itch and sneeze!

onedogatoddlerandababy · 24/10/2015 10:38

Same as everyone else - wool hand wash on the machine with wool/silk liquid detergent. You need to make sure that you do not use any bio liquid/powder. I dry mine flattish on the airer don't bother drying on towels any more.

pdxs · 24/10/2015 11:40

I hand wash with liquid woolite. Dry by rolling in a towel to remove moisture then dry flat... never hang. I know its a faff but clothes are pricey so worth it to me

Larastheme · 24/10/2015 14:45

pdxs, I do that too, all my sweaters are very expensive and I can't risk putting them in the wash or taking them to a dry cleaner, I watched many Martha Stewart videos about hand washing here, and she has some good advice,
