Can I wear a quilted coat without looking like a house?

I'm larger than I should be, by about half my bodyweight. It's not a good look but I'm trying not to be defeatist! I'm working on the weight problem, again, but meanwhile I have no coat. Well, none that will do up.

I want a cheap coat to do one winter and I hope not look too awful. I don't feel the cold much, so it doesn't need to be super-cosy.

I assumed quilted would be out, but so many supermarket coats are - can I get away with it?

Honestly- I think they're functional, utilitarian... Not stylish on anyone but very popular so not particularly noticeable, iyswim- more importantly they are warm and comfortable, which is surely a bonus! I would not be trying to find a stylish one, but I would embrace the fact that it's a useful coat, everyone wears them and you will be snug as a bug! Worry about stylish things underneath the coat, not the cost itself, I say!

AppleSnapple · 20/10/2015 21:58

That was very long winded, sorry.

To summarise- yes, you can get away with it!

Pocketrocket31 · 20/10/2015 21:59

Nope, quilted makes every 1 look bigger Sad what about a thick trench? Something belted?

amarmai · 21/10/2015 00:06

a belted quilted coat looks better.

Whathaveilost · 21/10/2015 00:10

No you can't. I'm a size 14 and I can't either even though I would love to. Anyone that is a bit over weight looks like a stuffed bag of spuds.
A belted one would look worse.

Find something else and when you have tell me!! I'm still looking for a nice warm coat that isn't one of my ski jackets or from The North Face!!

amarmai · 21/10/2015 12:10

i've been wearing quilted coats, some belted , some not for the past 40+ winters in Canada. I am size 14+/_ So speak for yourself Whatthe!

Whathaveilost · 23/10/2015 08:38

Anyone can wear a quilted coat armami it doesn't mean they look good, especially if like us at a size 14 you are large.

They are extremely warm and practical though.

spankhurst · 23/10/2015 08:43

It depends on your shape. I'm a pear, somewhat overweight, but with a small waist and broadish shoulders to counterbalance my hips, so I belt my quilted coat quite firmly and it looks OK.

If you're an apple they are going to add a lot of bulk in the middle, but they're so cosy and useful it's worth it I reckon.

Runningupthathill82 · 23/10/2015 09:09

I have one quilted coat and it makes me look huge. Like a gable end. Hence it's worn out in the hills, on cold days, only!

They are warm but they're not flattering. Mine makes me look spherical.

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 23/10/2015 11:25

I have one, I am aware I look like a walking barrel but on a really cold day I don't give a shit.

Whathaveilost · 23/10/2015 11:59

My mum said I looked like an insulated tank in mine. What was galling was it was when I was in my size 8 days!!!! She hasn't seen me out in my latest one now that I am a 14!!

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 23/10/2015 12:05

Yes insulated tank is about right. I like the fact that I can dress up under it, scuttle out into the darkness and arrive at my destination in warmth

LittleRedSparke · 23/10/2015 12:08

"especially if like us at a size 14 you are large."

Is 14 considered to be 'large'? I suppose if you are 4ft nothing, then maybe?

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/10/2015 12:11

Yes of course you can. And belted doesn't work if you are at all apple shaped.

I have one from uniqlo which is above my knee in their ultra-light down - something like that may work.

Nonnainglese · 23/10/2015 12:17

Halloween Shock Size 14 'large'?
I've got one, below knee, gorgeously warm and so what if I look like an insulated tank I love it.

Freezing for the sake of fashion is being gormless imo.

merrygoround51 · 23/10/2015 12:17

You can but I would try Comptoir des Cotoinners or Max & Co if you want to splash out. Getting one with a good cut will make the difference.

The cheap ones are all too bulky

OnlyHereForTheCamping · 23/10/2015 12:20

Uniqlo ones look lovely (as these things go). Do they last well?

SuckingEggs · 23/10/2015 18:56

Bumping in desperation! I, too, search the functional yet fashionable coat!

KateSpadeAddict · 23/10/2015 19:58

I got a really nice parka style coat from Sainburys last year, it had a toggle string thing around the middle on the inside so you could pull it in to give it some shape. It has a lovely furry hood Grin

Had you thought about something like that?
