Suddenly having a mid life fashion crisis!

I am in my early 40s and not feeling terribly happy with life at the moment.

Fashion is the least if my problems but I have always loved clothes and wearing something nice always makes me feel better. I have quite a few nice things but suddenly a lot of them just feel wrong. My figure has not changed - I have always been small and petite - but being a bit older and not feeling that great about myself I am suddenly drawn to much simpler, classic things.

Has anyone done that - had a bit of a wardrobe make over even though you didn't actually need new clothes?

Times change: your body and face change; your life changes; your tastes change. I think it makes perfect sense to keep reviewing your wardrobe to see if it's still working for you.

I've done it a few times. In my 40s, it finally clicked that I looked terrible in black and I started wearing colour. In my mid 50s, I realised my body shape had changed so I had to start all over again working out what suited me - that was a big overhaul. In my very late 50s, I've started investing in better underwear and gravitating towards more fitted, structured clothes because I don't look good in floaty, floppy stuff any more.

But what I refuse to do, is give up wearing something purely because of my age. If I still like it and I still think it suits me, then it stays.

So if you really like simple and classic and it feels more 'you', then go for it. But if you're doing it just because you're over 40 and you think you should, then I would say, no.

That's a very long winded way of saying, wear clothes that make you feel good. Don't be pressured into giving up things you like just because you've hit a certain age but at the same time, don't be afraid to change. I hope things get better soon.

I'm a similar age to you and have had to overhaul my wardrobe over the past year due to losing a lot of weight. I've found I've replaced my old brighter, patterned clothes with much plainer, more classic colours - lots of grey and navy which I've never been drawn to before. And I feel better in these more simple clothes with bright accessories that make it feel me. I don't think I could ever give up red shoes.

I think it's good to review your clothes regularly and take into account how your life has changed and how you feel about the clothes now. But I wouldn't change your style just because you think you should, only if it feels right and you're being drawn to different clothes.
