I want to jazz myself up a bit!

I don't wear makeup as I don't know how. Tutorials are a waste of time as I don't even own any 'basics' and the tutorials all require different brushes, powders, creams etc which I'm not going to buy.
But I can do lipstick I think?

I have the skin colour of jameela jamil, and she wears a lot of red lipstick. I've rooted through the dds makeup box (I don't own any of my own!) and tried a red on. I look a bit er, vampy? Wanton?!

What kind of colours may suit me? I have brown everything (skin/hair/eyes)! But usually wear black or navy.

Yes, so inventive!

Please don't send me to a beauty counter as its so far from me it's unreal! And any top tips for applying lipstick?

I am not a make up guru, I rarely wear it, but when I do I always think I should do more. Have you tried BB creams? They are like a tinted moisturiser, so you don't need to worry too much about blending and sponges. You can get them in boots or super drug, the Bourjois one is supposed to be good.
Red lipstick is gorgeous, so if you feel brave enough then wear it. Perhaps get a subtle lip liner so you can fill in more easily. If that feels too much get a lip gloss in a peachy pink, or whatever colour you feel good in, I think you need to experiment a bit, and have fun.

If you don't like the idea of a make up counter how about a consultation- more private - beauticians tend to do them, or house of colour do I think

CakeNinja · 16/10/2015 08:53

I don't think I want to veer into tinted moisturiser, Just the lips for now!

Is a lipliner supposed to be the same colour as my lips or the same colour as the lipstick?

And it's a flat out no to lipgloss, so sticky and my hair would be constantly stuck in it!

I'm not against the idea of wearing red, it was just quite bright! Maybe stealing makeup from 10 year olds is where I'm going wrong?

I'd be tempted to go and have a mooch about the stands in the supermarket or Wilko if you don't fancy the counters. You could just browse and pick what you fancy and then get used to that.

With your colouring you really can pull off the bolder colours, but it might feel a bit much to be starting off with if you're not used to wearing make up. You could do something in a bold colour but with a more sheer finish. Revlon Lip Butters are great and inexpensive for experimenting. Candy Apple is a soft red, Wild Watermelon a pinky red (my personal favourite), but there are berry-ish shades which would suit you and maybe a bit less intimidating than a red. I also like Sweet Tart, which is a lovely vibrant pink.

Another recommendation would be Clinique's Black Honey Almost Lipstick, which is a sheer berry, but buildable and suits everyone.

Go to Superdrug, buy a selection of £1 MUA and Makeup Revolution lipsticks and just get stuck in. You'll soon realise what suits you and what doesn't.

Lipliner should more or less match your lipstick. It gives a more polished finish but isn't always necessary.

Oh my god, it's a minefield!
Was having a look in sainsburys earlier and there was a huge array, it was all rather intimidating.
£25 for a tinted moisturiser? Confused my face already has a colour!
And none of them seemed dark enough to actually make my skin look, what? What is it supposed to do anyway? Make it look a different colour? (Why?) make it look the same colour? (The same as it already is? Why would I need it??)
Gah, I think I'll stick to being a plain Jane!

I remember walking through house of fraiser the other day and the women on the make up counters looked coloured in, like paint by numbers - it puts me off!
Thanks for the advice but it's too scary trying to be jazzy Grin

Cake, before you give up, try Clinique chubby sticks. Airport counters are less scary, if you are going away at any point. The chubby sticks are usually easy to get at without asking the scary, painted ones (usually on stand thing near counter). Go bolder cloud wise than you'd think. They are sheer and give you a nice tint. So, they don't bleed or go blotchy but naturally fade off, easy to reapply and an easy half way house for people like me who are too scary of lipstick. It might be Revlon do a cheaper one? (Clinique are about £16 Shock)

misslemonsfilingcabinet · 17/10/2015 07:49

Two ton tomato or chunky cherry might suit you?

CakeNinja · 17/10/2015 08:09

What the flipping heck is a chubby stick?
I don't want to be coloured in!!
I put something on the back of my hand yesterday and rubbed it in and it turned all chalky and grey looking. I just wanted an idea of what colour I should be looking for (think it was a foundation?) and it made me hand look weird and really one dimensional, like a Coat of emulsion Confused
Seriously, I'm completely lost and think I'll steer clear, just have it in my head that one day I might be able to do this!

It's really not that difficult.

Do you have any skin issues such as zits, uneven colouring, dark under eye circles or oily issues? If not skip foundation.

Re lipstick you need a matte neutral red so you don't need a liner. Next do an excellent one so you can just order it online or pop into their stores.
