Knitwear for big boobs

FondantFancy66 · 14/10/2015 10:32

Hoping for some fashion help here! As its autumn I'm seeing a lot of gorgeous knitwear about, but I know that when it comes to wearing it, there's very little that seems to suit me, or maybe I'm looking at the wrong things. I've got quite big boobs, so I always feel that anything too chunky makes me look frumpy. And anything high necked is out. Any suggestions? What do the rest of you wear? For reference, I'm about 5foot6, size 10-12 (usually), mid 30s and my regular uniform is skinny jeans, top, trainers or ankle boots in winter. I'm not really a high heel person, so footwear tends to be flat most of the time.

Any ideas?

Are you me? :)
I went shopping with exactly this issue yesterday.
I came back with this, which was more money than I wanted to spend. But l love it!

What's your budget? Primark had some thin cosy knits in the other week but I appreciate you may be looking for something of higher quality Grin

That French Connection one looks lovely. If I wear jumpers, they tend to be longer length, I feel they're a bit more flattering than waist length.

Budget not really set. I'd spend a fair bit on things that I know would last, but equally, some cheaper bits would be good too. Nothing wrong with Primark, I'll pop in next time I'm in town.

Cowl necks are good and I've had a few nice jumpers from M&S. Obviously nothing chunky or polo neck. Longline fitted cardis are good too.

I struggle with this too. I'm 5', size 10 and an F cup, so have to be really careful with knitwear or I can look like a prop forward.

Having said that, John Lewis have basic cashmere V-necks in a variety of colours. They are not going to set the world on fire style-wise, but I will be teaming mine with my skinny jeans and using scarves / accessories to brighten thing up.

Hobbs also have some nice wool / cashmere mix. I am thinking of going back for this which worked quite well despite the higher neckline. Only thing is that depending on your proportions, you might find the Hobbs jumpers shorter than you'd prefer.

Jaeger have longer knits in this year. I went past them tbh because they were two long, but I am obviously a lot shorter than you.

Now if I could just find some tops that aren't jumpers I'd be sorted Hmm Grin

FondantFancy66 · 14/10/2015 11:43

The Hobbs one is nice, but I've got a longish upper body, so waist length jumpers are always that tiny bit too short. I'll have a look at Jaegar and Jhn Lewis.

I'm never keen on cowl necks and never think to try them. My mum was a big fan when I was a kid, so maybe I automatically see them as something for somebody older. Of course, in my childhood memories of my mum, she was probably younger than I am now, having had her children younger, so I probably being daft!

I know what you mean OP. The options that I find suit me don't feel very fashionable at the moment.

I find kimono/batwing sleeves are quite flattering and sometimes mean I can get away with a higher than usual neckline too.

Cowl necks do suit too (they also remind me slightly of my mum Grin but she was definitely younger than me when she wore them!)

Or v necks.

Mint Velvet have quite a few options that might suit - I've got a lovely jumper from there that I have had for years - it still looks great.

Have a look here

Are you definitely wearing the right bra size?

I ask because I struggled with tops until I found my right bra size. It makes a huge difference to how tops fit.

FondantFancy66 · 14/10/2015 13:27

Yes, I get my bra size checked regularly. Bravissimo are my friends.

Off to the Mint Velvet website.

I bought this recently:
m.oasis-stores.com/double-stripe-jumper/cardigans-&-jumpers/oasis/fcp-product/5521268

It's viscose which I prefer to acrylic and the two tone colour but at the bottom is quite flattering. And having been on the oasis website to get you the link I now have £115 of clothes in my basket. Oops!

Thin knits, not too high necked

I read a really good tip a while back... to go for slim fitting arms if busty (no batwing, or loose blousy sleeves ) - has helped me pick out more flattering styles

KatharinaRosalie · 15/10/2015 12:30

You say you don't like them, but honestly, give cowl necks a try. Not the ones that are called cowl necks and are really just a bit loose turtle neck. but this type is very flattering

FondantFancy66 · 16/10/2015 06:31

Actually, that ones quite nice. When I think of cowl necks, I think of ones where the neckline goes to your waist, that ones a lot more subtle.

You sound similar to me in your hunt for tops / knitwear that doesn't finish on your waist. I'm 5,7 and have a few bits from Gap Tall which skim my hips. They sell loads of knitwear so worth checking them out?

simonettavespucci · 16/10/2015 10:40

OP I have a similar body shape. I find seasalt is good for consistently long in the back knitwear (though not everyone likes the style). Subtle cowl necks definitely are flattering. Also things made from a relatively light fabric so they flow rather than looking upholstered. I nearly bought this from jigsaw for instance:

www.jigsaw-online.com/products/soft-mesh-silk-trim-sweater-11014

It's wool so it's warmish, but even with the relatively high neck it looks good on.
