Tell me how you clean your makeup brushes

I had a MAC makeover last week and was given a 'how to look after your brushes' daily/weekly/monthly

I was wondering what real people do & use Smile

I wash the regularly used ones - so face brushes basically - once a week or so depending on if I've worn make up.

I wash mine with liquid soap and warm water, bristles down, swirling them into the palm of my hand until clean. I then let them dry naturally hanging off the edge of my vanity. I do not own 'spot cleaning' fluid as its a waste of money in my eyes and I don't really like the idea of using chemicals on my brushes!

Imo, expensive brush cleaners are a con.

Fill the sink with warm water and baby shampoo or Dr Bronners. Thoroughly wash brushes. I go from least dirty to dirtiest, usually changing the water once.

Leave to dry at a downward angle (to protect the ferrule). I use rolled up towels to lean mine on.

I use the tresemme naturals shampoo that gets rid of build up

Baby shampoo and warm water here too. Leave to dry naturally on the windowsill usually. I did buy a proper 'make up brush shampoo' once but it was rubbish.

I wash mine with Hibi scrub in the palm of my hand rinse. Reshape, then dry them flat with the brush head hanging over the edge.

I use a spot cleaner and clean them with that after every use or sometimes every other if I am in a rush and know they won't dry by next use. I then wash with soap and water weekly.

I wash mine about every five years! Blush

RainbowCake · 14/10/2015 09:22

I wet mine then swirl in my palm with baby shampoo. Probably about once a month. Then leave to air dry.

Watched a YouTube video where you blob washing up liquid and olive oil in a dish, then use your brushes to swirl and mix them up. Washing liquid cleans, olive oil keeps the fibres in good nick. Rinse and dry standing the brushes with bristles downwards. Works a treat, I probably do mine monthly, don't wear make up often.

I use the bobbi brown brush cleaner on a cotton pad after I've used the brush - it's the kind that you spray on a tissue and wipe the brush over to dissolve the make up.

I don't wear make up every day so deep cleaning is more infrequent for me. Once every 3 - 4 weeks I give them a wash with baby shampoo, don't totally submerge them as it loosens the glue holding the bristles. After I've rinsed them I lay them angled downwards to dry.

I saw a "how to" clip on American TV which works a treat: squirt some liquid detergent (I use baby shampoo) on a sponge; swirl the brush round and round then rinse. Repeat if needed then lay brush on a piece of kitchen towel or stand it up in a pot if preferred. Works a treat. The sponge and swirl really seems to get into the middle of the brush, especially the big ones.

I wash mine with shampoo in the sink . Then drip dry .

Judydreamsofhorses · 14/10/2015 15:22

Every Sunday - washed in baby shampoo, then air-dried on kitchen roll. I have duplicates of them all so I have one lot in use and the other drying, and will sometimes switch over midweek if they're particularly skanky.

RachelZoe · 14/10/2015 15:27

Isopropyl alcohol and normal shampoo/conditioner.

I give them a wash once a week and then isopropyl in between/post wash.

pdxs · 14/10/2015 22:58

Wash once a week or fortnight (if lazy) with hand wah or shampoo. Wipe excess gel eyeliner off in between but that's it. Brush cleaner really good (for gels, foundation ) but $$
