My dd is turning 1 in December. I had the idea that I could get her a charm bracelet now and then for each following birthday get her a charm relating to that stage in her life and then give it to her when she is 16.

So

  1. Please tell me if this is a crap idea.
And
  1. Please point me in the direction of a lovely charm bracelet!

Not a pandora according to a thread in AIBU... Do you want it to fit her now? Or when she will be older?

Also, I like the idea.

Personally I would buy the charms but leave the bracelet for an older birthday. She might want to wear some of the charms whilst still very young and a cheapish bracelet would do to be replaced by a better quality one at 16.

I wouldn't go for s type of charm where you can only attach one brand of charms, go generic that way you can buy them on holiday or get the odd one from tiffany's.

Haha gaston I saw that just after I posted this. I think one to fit her when she's older would be better. My mum did a similar thing with me buy now the charm bracelet is too small!

Lucked sorry I should have explained I wouldn't be giving dd the charms for each birthday so she wouldn't actually know about it till I give her the whole bracelet if that makes sense? Definitely agree with the not just one brand bit though!

My mum did this with my daughter. It's a lovely idea. She went to an old fashioned jewellery shop and bought a bracelet. She gave it to her on her 13th birthday with all the charms. She treasures it

DD godmother bought a charm for her christening and every birthday - actual bracelet when she turned 13

Generic charms - DD is now 24 and wears the bracelet on its own - but mixes up the charms on chains, as earrings etc depending on her mood

I know Pandora is seen as a bit naff on here but DD also has pandora bracelet full of charms

I have a leather one with only a few charms but not my thing and the rattling annoys me when I'm at work so will be E baying soon

No advice on brands, but what a fab idea! I think she'll treasure it when she's older.

Go to a decent jeweller and go with an old style charm bracelet. Much more variety in charms which also means you can get ones more meaningful than the majority of Pandora style ones. They're also pretty timeless and not faddy.

You could even get some charms made for her. You don't have to stick to specific sizing and brands then either.

Oh I love the idea of getting charms made triptrap !

Old Style vote here too. I've had mine since I was five - my DG bought most of my charms and I love it. I have a Nomination and Pandora but my "vintage" one is my favourite.

Ebay is a great place to look for charms - my bracelet is far from full!
