Acid toner and retinol advice

SaltySeaBird · 10/10/2015 11:27

I keep seeing both acid toner and retinol mentioned on here but could really do with advice on specific products. Also, are both able to be used in pregnancy?

For acid toner I looked at the Clinique Mild Clarifying toner but I think it is quick weak, or is that all I need.

For retinol I have done a few searches, got confused so came back here!

I'd really appreciate it if somebody could link to the actual products they use!

Acid - pixi glow, Clarins exfoliating or bravura calendula
Retinol - I use LRP Redermic R

For retin A look at the SPC from the manufacturer

It says not to use during pregnancy

There is a risk to child

Glycolic is okay.

ilovetosleep · 10/10/2015 20:19

I have been using LRP redermic and a mild bha toner while breastfeeding a toddler and am now wondering if I shouldn't be. Does anyone know?

InternationalEspionage · 10/10/2015 20:26

BHA = salicylic acid which should definitely be avoided during pregnancy as its basically aspirin. Blood thinning and all that. I can't see how it would be bad to breastfeed on it but am no expert.

Kennington · 10/10/2015 21:07

Lrp redermic is sold over the counter so there shouldn't be any problem.
The levels in these products are super low.
Retin A is prescription only (and a derivative of vitaminA) and is a more potent.
Likewise the salicylic acid will be present in low doses and shouldnt pose a risk - if it did it wouldn't be sold over the counter

Acid toners: Clinique mild is really mild - I haven't noticed any real difference to my skin.
FAB pads (First Aid Beauty). Good - I think these do make a difference
Just started trying out Pixi Glow and have had a few spots since I started using it. Not sure if it's related to that or my generally crappy diet recently and/or the fact that I'm 40 weeks pregnant!

HixieRice · 12/10/2015 16:02

RetinA and similar are known to cause birth defects, don't risk it!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 12/10/2015 18:02

Lots of acid toners won't say "acid toner" on them. Olay Anti-Wrinkle toner is one, as is Boots Time Delay. Both cheap as chips and as good as the Nip and Fab pads I'm using now. Olay slightly has the edge.

mowglik · 12/10/2015 19:49

hixie this is referring to retinoids taken internally and advice now is that external/topical during pregnancy is fine. Read around though and obviously do what you are comfortable with

This will give you some info on why salicyclic acid should be avoided. Your doctor can advise further. Glycolic is fine...it has nothing to do with blood thinning.

Forget the idea that otc or on the shelf means pregnancy safe.

Australia had a great phone information line with medical staff who could advise on food and product safety in pregnancy and explain risks. Access was only given to women who were registered as pregnant in the healthcare system. Called morhersafe or something like that.

Maybe the UK has something similar. Good luck.

I've done the research mowglik...
