Maternity clothes are so boring!

Everywhere is search I find a sea of grey, black and white. Dull dull dull dull dull! Share with me your finds and favourites and must have items. Last time round I wore any old thing that fitted. This time round I want to look stylish but not safe.

It's about creating a capsule wardrobe - for me it's been
Skinny jeans, spotty shirt buttoned through, leather jacket, boots, good makeup
Chinos, crepe top or fitted tee, fitted / smarter jacket
Harlem trousers, fitted top, either fitted Jersey jacket or kimono style top
Statement sweatshirt, jeans, converse
Embellished jacket/ statement jacket, black cigarette trousers,
Drape front top, drape jacket, skinny jeans, heels
Accessories are either total statement or very pared back

So- in a nutshell my usual style adapted- think Cos, Zara, with a bit of casual footwear chucked in

rageagainsttheBIL · 09/10/2015 12:54

Tbh I don't really do maternity clothes for that reason.

I've bought myself blue skinnies, black smart jogger cuffed trousers and black leggings from maternity range at top shop.

Wearing these with a lot of my normal clothes - baggier jumpers, jumper dresses, looser tops etc.

There are loads of drape tops and oversized woollens in the shops' normal ranges this season that would work.

I have ordered maternity stuff from asos and h&m but sent it all back...

I guess it depends on your style though.

Hopefully · 09/10/2015 13:07

I found ASOS, h&m and, randomly, Next were good for more interesting bits last time I was pregnant. I also wore non maternity leggings under my bump with long vests from h&m to hide the gap.

Dowser · 09/10/2015 13:28

I would fall on my sword if I had to show you what I wore when pregnant. In my defence it was the 70 s

Anything today must be better than that.

FauxFox · 09/10/2015 13:32

There are nearly 400 items on Asos maternity that are not black/brown/navy/white/beige/grey here

Seriously there is so much compared to when I was upduffed 10 years ago - I had twins and by the end the only top that fitted me was a mens promotional O2 rugby shirt DH got given at a corporate day Grin

Whoknewitcouldbeso · 09/10/2015 13:39

I think if you are slim and pregnant you can adapt your normal wardrobe. If however you put in a ton of weight or are heavier to begin with it's always a bit more tricky to look stylish.

I'm not slim sadly but have got by with some nice maternity jeans from H&M, stretchy dresses over opaques, a few specific maternity tops from ASOS which my bump can't fill yet!

Elfontheedge · 09/10/2015 16:38

Ok fauxfox I may have exaggerating a tad when I said everything was dull but really I like abut more colour in my wardrobe. A lot of the maternity tops that are otherwise ok are a bit high in the neckline and are making my FF cups look huuuuuge! I am also a really fussy bigger Grin

I've been thinking the same thing! Angry
I'm 22 years old and have always been into my high waisted jeans and wedges, both of which I can't wear anymore :(

At the moment I just end up buying bigger sizes in the clothes I would usually wear with the exception of jeans which I have purchased a few pairs of topshop maternity joni jeans which I literally live in!

H&M have some nice things in but I'm having trouble finding the sizes atm because they come in S-XL instead of actual sizes :\

Also have found that these boring clothes are quite expensive aswell, I just can't justify it.

mrslebon · 09/10/2015 23:05

I'm 19 weeks and a size 8, and have just embraced the 'over the bump' jeans that H&M do. I'm really pleased with them and people have no clue that they're maternity. I have the black/grey ones in these and the mid blue are on order: www.hm.com/gb/product/85143?article=85143-A

Unlike most of H&M's other maternity jeans, these have a decent amount of cotton in them and are nice and soft.

Obviously being pregnant doesn't affect shoes and bags so I've bought these boots from Boden to wear with skinnies: www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Shoes-Boots/Boots/AZ217-DPR/Womens-Burgundy_Burgundy-Leopard-Keira-Boot.html

I have these for a more casual look with the H&M skinnies (got them for £20 in the sale):
www.hm.com/gb/product/82180?article=82180-A&cm_vc=SEARCH

I treated myself to this Jigsaw leather tote bag which I'll use as a change bag when baby no 2 arrives:
www.jigsaw-online.com/products/leather-tote-bag-11222

I've bought these two coats:

www.johnlewis.com/collection-weekend-by-john-lewis-wool-coat-blue-black/p2095131

This in khaki: www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/161384

Both of these are cut so there is room for growth.

I bought these faux leather trousers for work - note the elasticated waist! I bought my usual size 8:

www.riverisland.com/women/trousers--leggings/cropped-trousers--joggers/black-leather-look-slim-joggers-672017

..and I'm wearing them with these tops in grey marl and dark green:

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 09/10/2015 23:34

I wore less specifically maternity clothes with each pregnancy.

I did buy maternity jeans but just bought stretchy tops in a size or two bigger than normal (these are less depressing and more flattering to wear directly after the birth than proper maternity clothes too)

Also I found a few nice accessories helped. I had a great necklace that I wore lots and it lifted fairly simple outfits.

Featherstep · 10/10/2015 08:02

I had the same thought too. A lot of the maternity styles like wrap tops and dresses, tunics, empire line stuff and long tees are just not my style and I still can't bring myself to buy those. I'm a petite size 8 normally.

Now about 17 weeks, I've caved and got a pair of Topshop maternity jeans on ebay. So far so good. Eyeing the H&M ones, lots of people seem to rate them! I think I'm going to wear these a lot with my normal jumpers this winter. Can anyone advise on the difference between the H&M skinnies and super skinnies? They look virtually the same in the pics...

There are some nice looking things on asos but I don't want to spend a lot on clothes I'll only wear for a short time, so I'm also planning to just adapt my wardrobe.

I've found that a cheap jersey black maxi dress I bought on ebay is WONDERFUL for pregnancy. It's one of those basic racer back ones. I just add a long sleeve tee or a jumper, and it's so comfortable and slimming too. I'm planning to get a similar plain jersey midi dress in gray.

Probably a knit, close fit jumper dress would get a lot of wear too, like those roll neck ones that are in fashion this season. Knits are stretchy and a dark one would be quite flattering with a bump I think. Like this maybe: www.asos.com/vero-moda/vero-moda-long-sleeve-roll-neck-knitted-dress/prod/pgeproduct.aspx?iid=5530635&clr=Black&SearchQuery=roll+neck+dress&pgesize=36&pge=0&totalstyles=59&gridsize=3&gridrow=5&gridcolumn=1

Dowser · 10/10/2015 10:21

Anything here op. I was in new look yesterday and saw the blue butterfly dress and a dark red with the white bird outline. Pretty but for a winter dress they are just thin polyester which seemed a bit ridiculous to me.

Page two. Those dresses are £14-99

Bodicea · 12/10/2015 21:12

I have given up on maternity jeans/ trousers. They just fall down or give me thrush!!
I have been sticking to dresses in this pregnancy accessorised to the max. Have a few nice plain black/navy dresses that I accessorise with statement jewellery / cool scarves/ fitted jackets ( non mat worn open). Wear with leggings or tights now it's getting colder.
Also have a few nice non mat dresses - tube dresses that I could never have got away with when I wasn't pregnant. Enjoying showing off my bump.

Elfontheedge · 12/10/2015 21:51

I have just ordered this [http://www.next.co.uk/x6d2230s1#774556x56] dress. Hoping it's not too thin. I also got a nice t-shirt in the H&M sale with a gold pineapple printed on which I thought was kind of fun. Payday next week so will be buying a few more things then.

Speaking of Next, I found some amazing black coated skinnies in their maternity range: www.next.co.uk/g412150s2#402801

Weirdly, if you click on Denim, you get the black ones - at least, that's what I got in my order today! They're really flattering on and sort of faux leather -ish but not as shiny. Really chuffed with them!

mrslebon · 12/10/2015 22:42

Forgot to add, I bought this shirt dress in Zara at the weekend. It looks lovely with a berry coloured roll neck underneath (I got one in Uniqlo) and over tights with tan knee boots, or over pleather leggings.

www.zara.com/uk/en/woman/dresses/view-all/printed-shirt-dress-c733885p3037064.html

Not sure I'd wear it tied at the front like the model though. I prefer it as it is with a skinny belt just under the boobs to pull it in a bit.

u32ng · 13/10/2015 08:24

Jo jo maman Bebe wrap top!

They do lovely jewel colours. You wrap them yourself so they will fit you throughout pregnancy and for as long as you want after.

I had 1 in my last pregnancy and wished I'd bought it sooner. This time I've bought 2 more and they are just fab. Also flattering to the bigger boobWink though you will need a vest top underneath.
