Hennes sizing.

Bought some trousers from H&M. (I've put weight on and have gone from a 10 to a 12 on a good day, creeping towards a 14). The 12 was really small, I couldn't do them up, more like how my size 10s fit now. I ordered the 14, still too small. Is this normal for Hennes? The 14 looks more like an average 12. I want to order some jeans but can't bring myself to order the 16 when I really need to get my weight back down to my normal size !

H&M sizing is all over the shop (excuse the pun), as has been noted here before, but generally on the small side.

I'm normally a 10, but would go for a 12 in H&M and have even had to go for a 14. Having said that, I bought a bodycon style skirt in there last winter and had to go for the 8 as the 10 was massive. Go figure.

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2015 15:45

Blimey, I thought I was the only person left who knows H&M as Hennes! Their sizing is bonkers and you have to try everything on.

mrsplum2015 · 08/10/2015 15:46

Yes I'm struggling to breathe in 2 pairs of their skinny trousers size 10 I bought (without trying) when size 10 is my normal size.

TreacleFiend · 08/10/2015 15:48

Yes, hearing 'Hennes' is a welcome journey into the past.

I used to like a trip to the High St Ken Hennes & Mauritz on holiday when there were very few (or any?) further North. I always thought I was shopping at a rather exclusive boutique. Blush

SirVixofVixHall · 08/10/2015 16:32

It will always be Hennes to me....Glad to hear that their sizing is unpredictable and often small. I'll order a 14 in the jeans and go from there!
I remember the Ken high st one! It did seem so exclusive.

I find they are 2 sizes smaller than other shops in anything non-stretchy, but their T-shirty tops and skirts that just come in size S M L are massive and I need a smaller size than usual. For example when I take size 18 I need size 22 in there (which they hardly ever do any more) but only size M in tube skirts!

SirVixofVixHall · 08/10/2015 17:04

Emma that is bonkers isn't it? The trousers I bought are non stretchy.

Utterly random to the extent that it's worth taking 3 copies of the same item in the same size into the changing room in case they vary by a crucial 2%.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/10/2015 17:16

Haha. Yes, the crucial 2%... I live in the middle of nowhere so its all online shopping, which makes the nutty sizing a real pain.

No idea about sizing but calling in Hennes has taken me back to my student days, going to the big store at Oxford Circus. .

MrsEdinburgh · 08/10/2015 17:20

Yes H & M sizes are bonkers! Like Anyone says different sizes into the changing room or hold item up and see if it looks the right size Smile

The first time I ever had money to spend on clothes by myself I went there. I bought a royal blue flannel shirt with black pinstripes and put the gold sleepers I'd had my ears pierced with through the collar tips. It was 1984, I was 13 and think it cost about £10. That's how much I had a month for clothes.

I bought a herringbone double breasted wool 3 piece trouser suit in HSK H&M in the mid-90s. I looked like an Edwardian barrow boy but I loved that suit. I asked my boss out of courtesy whether trousers were OK before I wore it for the first time and the bugger said "No!" His boss then over-ruled him on the grounds of it being the 1990s not the bloody 1890s.

SirVixofVixHall · 09/10/2015 19:25

Edwardian barrow boy is a look I aspire to meself. I bet you looked amazing.

H&M sizes have always been weird. I remember my steady size 12 mum having to get a size 18 in a non-stretchy but quite floaty maxi dress Confused

cheesehulahoops · 09/10/2015 19:42

Today I bought a blouse from there. It's quite a slim fitting style but I had to go to a size 16!!! I am normally a 12 although with big norks :))

I tried the 14 on and might just have got away with it but was worried there might be that horrible gaping at the buttons around the boob line. Having said all that there were some lovely tops in there (also bought a size 14 top) and tried on the infamous red and white tee/sweatshirt that everyone is talking about on here. The medium was fine but only just.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/10/2015 20:44

I bought a size 14 suit (for an interview) from there. I can fit into a 12 in other shops and a 10 in some, like Next. However, if I measure myself and look those measurements up, size 14 is the correct size, so it looks to me like H&M just hasn't gone in for the silly size inflation that's happened in the last few years. I'm willing to accept my 'real' size, plus the suit was cheap and I got the job.

kaymondo · 10/10/2015 22:14

I'm a 12 in jeans from most shops but my fave skinnies are a 16 from h&m. I ignore the label because the fit is so good - I have 3 pairs!
