What message did her dress give and where is it from?

I think it was Roland Mouret but it's a real shame as it just didn't fit. I think she wanted to do a Nicola Sturgeon and come across as sharp, in control, business like. But Nicola gets her dresses made to measure so there aren't any weird lumps and bumps. It could have looked dynamite.

I didn't think she looked very professional-far too tight and eveningy.

I was much more concerned about the content of her speech.

Nice dress, but very frightening speech.

I will stick to talking about her apprearance. I've only seen a couple of photos but I thought she looked stylish and not 'evening' at all. In fact I'm wondering if I've seen different photos? I've no idea where the dress was from but I doubt it was TK Maxx - she likes her clothes.

The second, pseudonymity. The piece I saw was by Allison Pearson. (I'd rather not link and give it even more air time but it's easy to find on their front page.) It discusses, among other things, her weight loss and the shade of her hair dye. This is in their politics section not on their fashion page.

That is the one I saw, Floisme. A bit startled by the "mother superior to escort" bit and I wondered what the experts thought!

Apparently they're discussing it on radio 4. Depressing. As this is S&B however, I though she looked good but the neckline was distracting. She needs to rethink her haircut.

I don't know if you'd call me an expert, 7to25 But if I were a Telegraph reader, they would be feeling the sharp end of my tongue today.

I'm putting May's politics to one side as it's so rare to be able to discuss the clothing choices of a woman my age. I realise that sounds contradictory but I am capable of separating fashion from politics and so should the Telegraph.

(And May did at least tell the USA to do one over extraditing Gary Mckinnon. I applaud her for that.)

I think her dress was supposed to look severe , her dress needed to reflect her speech. Her hair was a bit messy looking and her makeup isn't smart enough but I think her dress did the talking.

I liked the neckline, WipsGlitter and I thought it was quite clever: distinctive - which she'd have wanted as she's making a pitch for leadership - but not startling or inappropriate.

The whole thing reminds me of that first episode of Borgen where the female politician starts off a televised debate by saying 'OK let's talk about my dress first and get it over with.' (or words to that effect.)

The dress was fine. I wonder why she never wears her hair up as the length looks kind of grown out and needing a trim all the time.

I just feel a bit grossed out at seeing so much of her skin I think they gave her the cutout neckline so people could see she was really human and there wasn't a join in her flesh suit ha you idiots, it's zipped up at the back

Ruth wore exactly the same dress on Loose Women yesterday.

hate her politics, but love that she a) probably styles herself, b) appears to have fun with clothes and c) doesn't give a shit about blending into the background like women in politics are supposed to.

I think it didnt do her any favours at all, she should have worn 'spanx' or something underneath

I dont care really how she looks, just if i was her shape and age, thats what i would do to make it fit better.

I have a feeling her microphone pack was underneath the dress at the back at waist level. I think this pulled the dress out of shape. She should have worn a necklace (like Prue Leith). This would have added interest to the front of the dress and made it less austere. Actually it was a smart dress and her hair looked good to me. Have any of the men looked any good, or do we just pick the women apart?

The dress itself is pretty and appropriate but it just does not fit her at all. She needs it to be properly fitted and altered accordingly.
The tummy section looks terrible.

I agree with everything JimmyGreaves says. It's refreshing to see a woman in a heavyweight job who likes clothes and isn't afraid to experiment and yes maybe get some things wrong.

Why don't we discuss the colour and cut of David Cameron's suit? - - or George Osborne's tie? - - why do women politicians get pulled apart for their appearance?? - I like TM and think she is a strong woman doing a good job - - what she looks like is secondary!.
