can you tell me , do i still need an eye primer even after using a face primer ?
and ive tried a few colours , all look shit on me except white and silver .

i have natural blonde hair and blue eyes . i suspect its just me being a numpty at applying it so im off to check out you tube for help aswell but do you have any recommendations for colour ? I am 40 and tend to just wear very natural looking stuff like pink lip gloss and mascara but i want to get better with make up and look better as i am starting to feel old !

Essence have a great eye primer called I Love Stage. So cheap (bit orange though) but holds colour beautifully.

Are you blending your shadows, or just using one over the lid?

Hamiltoes · 04/10/2015 23:46

Are you applying with a fairly decent brush?

Also, not all eyeshadows are born equal! A primer will help with the "worser" ones but a good urban decay/ mac shouldn't really need one. I usually go straight on top of moisturiser and I get enough pigment and lasts all day and night.

i havent any brushes , not sure what to get and so far i have just tried one colour over the lid . I kinda thought i just looked older and crepey tbh !

Zoeva brushes are really good, not stupidly expensive either.

Mac Paint Pots make good eye bases, they look good worn on their own too for a natural look. The shade 'Painterly' suits most people.

I think your best bet would be to visit a mac or urban decay counter and get a demo on colours/technique as it does vary quite a bit based on your skintone & eyecolour plus your eyeshape and other features as to what would look best

apply foundation to eyelids, use a brush (this one, www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/145/383/Products/Brushes/Eye/239-Eye-Shader-Brush/index.tmpl or a similar shape from another brand, including much cheaper versions from boots/sdrug or similar) - you can get more (blender, small shading brush) - but this will def do all you need to start

agree with hamil on primer - not nec if good shadow. The shadow needs something to 'cling' to (like foundation, or concealer, or a cream eyeshadow).. the primer will help it stay on IF you have oily eyelids

Also - I think the urban decay naked palettes (there are 3 to choose from) would be a great start to have enough shades for different but still relatively natural looks

You really need a brush or two. The sponge applicators that come with eyeshadow are useless. Zoeva or Real Techniques are pretty good and not expensive. You should have one that's sort of flat for patting colour over the lid, and one that's fluffier for blending out the edges, or blending two colours together. Blending is important to prevent the "OMG there's some eyeshadow!" look.

Or, as MsBojangles said, cream eyeshadows are good for patting on with your finger (use a clean finger to blend out the edges). Mac Paint pots are good, Maybelline Colour Tattoos are also good and much cheaper.

If you have blonde hair and blue eyes, cooler colours might suit you. Urban Decay Basics 2 palette is fabulous and pretty foolproof.

I have this set for eyes and it makes any of my eyeshadows go on so much better - my favourite is the crease brush - is foolproof.

There is a video on the website too

I don't need primer when I use no 7 eyeshadow. I just use a cheap brush to apply as well. Need primer with my urban decay pallete though so don't bother with it now. Not a huge fan off no 7 but found the eyeshadow brilliant!

thriftychicken · 06/10/2015 17:06

i will definitely invest in some brushes rather than the primer , not sure about colour , maybe its because im just not used to wearing it
