How consistant is clothes sizing?

I've bought 3 pairs of trousers, all the same size on the label and all from the same high street shop.

pair 1 = too small need larger size
pair 2 = just right
pair 3 = too big need size smaller

Is this a common problem? or is it just Evans?
Because it can be quite a depressing thing to go shopping for a large size pair of trousers and need to go back for an even larger sized pair of trousers!

I have found this in most stores actually, depends on the size of the hands of the ten yr old who has made them I guess.

next is terrible, especially their jeans

find places like warehouse and oasis quite reliable

dont get me started on levis' you could try on 25 pairs the same size (allegedly) and theyd all be different

There seems to be no consistant sizing anywhere - one of the main reasons I can't be arsed to order anything online as I never know what size to buy.In shops I can be a 10/12/14 so theres no point in ordering 3 of everything from an online store only to have to return most of them.

When I was (full-term) pregnant I remember having maternity clothes ranging from size 8-16 (thats 5 sizes!)

Think the cut makes a difference too, especially with trousers. I have slimish hips and can get away with a 12 and sometimes a 10 with a low rise pair of trousers but if they have a proper waist on them at waist height because I am thick waisted I would not be able to button the size 12s or they would be very tight, if I go to the 14 I often find they are way to big at the hips.

I agree, I find Jigsaw & Hobbs pretty consistent but sadly can't afford to shop there all the time!

I try not to worry about it, I buy the size that fits best but if I don't like the number on the label I cut it out! A few years ago everything was coming up huge but now everything seems skimpy (maybe it's because I'm pg??!) Or is it because there's a recession on the high street and they are trying to cut costs? I think some retailers try to con us into thinking we're slimmer than we really are by making things bigger to you can get into a smaller size. Primark are fairly skimpy, but then they are so cheap. M & S are quite generous. Bon Marche are most generous of all - it's the only place where I can still get into a Small (fantastic - pity I don't like much of their stuff) .
