SAHM style rut!

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 03/10/2015 20:03

I am looking for a bit of advice to break out of my style rut. Basically, in the winter it's skinny jeans or cords, plus Breton top, scarf and cardie or some form of over sized jumper.

My clothes have to be super practical. I often walk the 2.5 mile round trip school run (once, or sometimes twice, a day). I spend a lot of time with the toddler going to toddler groups in cold church halls, sitting on floors, in playgrounds, etc.

In terms of my shape, I'm a 14 (drifting very slowly back to a 12 with borderline 14 thighs). I am fairly tall and I don't do heels.

Any ideas? Is a jumper dress or something hideous?

Would love to inspire you, but I wear exactly the same. Think jumper dress sounds lovely, but not sure about the reality, like so many things in life.
I do quite fancy the idea of a cord mini skirt, but my kneeling days are over.
Have you considered flares? Might be the way forward, or even harem pants? Shirt dress?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 03/10/2015 21:43

So does everyone! I have checked the playground at school. Those who work part time adopt our uniform on their off days. The only people who dress differently are the very young mums (i.e. over 10 years younger than me) with the fabulous figures and the ability to walk in very high heeled boots. Or those who do 'jeans and grubby fleece, off to walk the dog'!

Flares make me feel old. I lived through the boot cut and it worries me! A cord mini skirt might be good. I could do that with 100 denier tights and boots maybe?

Or woolly perhaps? Long boots. I wear jeans every day of my life. I try not to, but I only feel good in jeans. Jackets or Blazers might be an idea. I also like cowl necks, but haven't yet found a nice one. Have you got a specific jumper free in mind?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 03/10/2015 22:02

No specific jumper dress. Wish I had!

I do have quite a nice blazer (worn with Breton, naturally!) but it does such a short window of weather...

I wear jumper dresses with dark trousers and black converse which look like shoes to work. I am on my feet all day and also need to be practical. Otherwise my style sounds very like yours.

I think we all get a bit stuck in this rut, but it's so easy and practical.
I try and wear a skirt once or twice a week. Tube skirts are pretty good for casual wear, enough give to run after children and long enough to sit on the floor in playgroups. I wear them with trainers, hi tops or ankle boots. Midi skirts and flats also work well.
Other people look good in shirt dresses & shifts, but they don't work for me.
Or if you're feeling adventurous a jumpsuit or boliersuit?

I made a conscious effort to force myself out of skinnies and into skirts and dresses at least 3-4 times a week. I tend to wear leggings instead of thick tights though as there is then less worry about flashing your knickers at toddler group. I have a charcoal cord mini skirt which is an ancient Kew one and gets worn an awful lot. Plus a denim skater style skirt which I really love as its a bit different. And round here (near the sea) tights under shorts is also a bit of a thing with the cooler mums (which I am not...).

hookedonamoonagedaydreem · 04/10/2015 01:09

I have a look on pintrest and see what outfits I like the look of, if they look like I could sit on the floor and change a nappy in them I go shopping and try and find similar. Some stuff comes from charity shops or TKMaxx so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't last forever. I also have to be really practical, so I need footwear (and bra) that I can run about in. I no longer sit on floors though as I have a bad back.

I like skinny jeans, or slim for a change, or cigarette...I try to avoid boot cut but might wear flares in the summer. TBH I try and avoid anything that screams 'mum'. If I also feel better if I don't wear leggings or waterfall cardies, I struggle with stripy tops as I owned at least 1 every time I was pg.

My theory is that if starts with my hair, if that is well cut then I am just more inclined to make an effort. Next on the list after hair is underwear. I also did a 'Marie Kondo' on my wardrobe and got rid of loads of stuff that was ill fitting and awful looking.

Instead of a nappy bag I have those plastic stationary wallets with a zip top, that way I can swap bags really easily. I also lurk on here a lot and get ideas of what to (or not to) wear.

I'm in the same style rut apart from I don't suit skinny jeans. I tend to live in Uniqlo heat tech tops with a short sleeve jumper dress, leggings and boots in winter.

I'm eyeing up this tunic top from Next

I wear a lot of jersey skirts (Hush do a lovely ruched one) with 200 denier fleece lined opaques (basically leggings in terms of thickness, but look like tights), with sloppy jumpers. Also jersey dresses, sometimes with a sweater or shirt over the top. I would in theory do a knitted jumper dress but haven't found a non-maternity one that works (wore them a lot when pregnant).

PeteHornberger · 04/10/2015 20:10

I know what you mean, I feel like I'm in a rut a lot of the time but also feel it's faintly ridiculous to wear massive heels and expensive stuff that just gets food wiped on it! Especially as 90% of the time I only see other SAHM and kids!

If I want a change, a jersey dress with leggings, brogues and a long necklace makes me feel a bit better about myself and like I'm not too dressed up but getting out of my jeans. I've got a nice dark green one from H&M at the mo which looks nice with black leggings and brogues.

cathyandclaire · 05/10/2015 08:21

Pete a dark green jersey dress sounds lovely, please can you link to it?

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 05/10/2015 12:25

Still jeans but have you tried boyfriend/girlfriend cut jeans?

PeteHornberger · 05/10/2015 19:57

Sorry, a link would have been helpful! Dark green jersey dress here

It doesn't look super-flattering, but it is - I'm big of nork and a size 14 and a medium fits me well. The jersey is nice and thick so it doesn't cling or bobble and it's got pockets which I love. Am going to buy the black as well and wear it with dark grey leggings (when something suits me, I wear the fuck out of it!).

That dress is gorgeous! hope they have it in stock when i go shopping this weekend.

deepblue · 05/10/2015 20:12

Hopefully, where do you buy your tights? They sound brilliant!

Primary sell thick fleece lines rights. They're super warm but they do go bobbly.

Hopefully · 06/10/2015 10:25

I buy the pretty polly fleece lined ones, from tights please

Toastedteacakewithbutter · 06/10/2015 11:53

I just bought that green dress and some boots . There's a 10% off code 3146

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 07/10/2015 20:11

Sorry. Didn't realise I had lots more answers. Thank you all. Some great ideas. Love the idea of fleece tights to open up skirt options!
