Mumsnet haircut gone wrong

Did it a few weeks back, went great, took off about an inch, nobody noticed (a good thing in my book). Decided it was still too long so went at it again, and again.. And now one side is shorter than the other, it's still too long at the ends and the bit that is too short keeps falling in my face (not short enough to be fringy and also is not graduated enough to look like proper layers). I basically look like I hacked at my hair. It's not too bad if I blow dry it kind of scrunched to make it look 'mussed" but the front bit is still awful. Not much I can do about it bar give myself a fringe, or leave it grow a bit.

I think to make it all look a bit better, I need to trim the ends a bit shorter - currently just below shoulder length and think at least another inch would make it look a bit less hacked..
So please tell me how to do this without further hacking the fuck out of my hair??

Side parting with a clip.... ?
Ive butchered my hair too!

Can you go to a hairdresser?

Smidge001 · 02/10/2015 23:12

I did the same, wanted it and the layers to be shorter, so did a second cutting. Think mine was pretty straight though, but the longest layer was just way too long compared with the rest. (Gave a mullet sort of appearance Blush )

What I did was to pull the long bits to each side into sort of low bunches, and cut a couple of inches off them. It seemed to work pretty well tbh. Made the layers more even and way less of a mullet.

"I basically look like I hacked at my hair".

But that's exactly what the MN haircut is Confused.

Hairdressers tomorrow and get them to tidy it up. And step away from the scissors!

BackInTheRealWorld · 02/10/2015 23:13

Hairdresser.
The mumsnet cut looks utter shite. I put my daughter through it a few times when funds were low though!

LettuceLaughton · 02/10/2015 23:32

Yeah, a hairdresser would be best. What a PITAWine

I did the MN cut on myself for years but the standard version doesn't take any length off the hair from the bottom, back section of the hair at all. It can't. Well, unless you have very long hair, or go really, crazily short at the front. It's because it's just so far from the nape of the neck to the hairline.

I used to do an adapted version (with sectioning and faff) which did work well and give consistent layering. It was a cut of it's time though, I think. It'd probably look a bit dated on me now but then, my hair is poker straight. Hair with a bit more of a wave is likely more forgiving.

Thanks, no way to get to hair dresser have been slammed in work and am away from tomorrow for a few nights. Hairdresser in destination is completely booked Saturday and doesn't work Sunday or Monday. I'll figure something out.
Yes lettuce that's exactly what happened, I was trying to get more off the back and ended up too short at front. Lesson learned!

Oh that is annoying. Can you wear it up?

I can explain my old method but TBH it's probably best just to leave it be if you can put it up.

twattersonsmythe · 03/10/2015 07:37

Get someone to trim the bottom layer so that there's less of a difference in length. If you want to risk evening out the layers, do the MN haircut again, but put the pony tail on the crown of your head instead of at the front, then trim a cm off.

burnishedsilver · 03/10/2015 08:07

Omg. Put down the scissors. Do not attempt to fix it yourself! The mn haircut is basically a mullet.

Curl it or tie it up for a few days until you can get to a salon.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2015 08:41

Go to a different hairdresser?
I cut my own hair frequently. Its usually ok but then my hair is forgiving as its wavy curly hair and noone would notice it isnt perfect. I also wear mine up most of the time.

LettuceLaughton · 03/10/2015 09:02

Do. Not. 'put the pony tail on the crown of your head instead of at the front, then trim a cm off.'

Palomb · 03/10/2015 09:05

yy to mullet. Not a good look.

Kirby grips will be your saviour :)
