what to wear over dungarees to keep warm

I have a bit of a grungy style, lots of black etc. I bought some black dungarees and they are awesome. The problem is that I can't work out what to wear over them. Normal coats look ridiculous, my leather jacket is a tad too long and doesn't look right, normal cardigans don't work either. The closest I have got is a cotton blazer, but it's still not quite right.

I love the dungarees, and want to wear them through the winter with black ankle biker boots, but won't be able to if I can't find something to go over to keep warm.

reccomendations would be fab. Even if you aren't the same style as me, just the shapes you have found to work over any dungarees. Thank you v much.

I have some and wear mine with parkas, either a lightweight one now, or a thicker one when it's colder

I bought the black Whistles ones at the beginning of spring and have worn them loads with either a black biker leather jacket, or a dark blue denim jacket, both hitting about waist level. I wondered about wearing them with a faux fur coat? I have yet to try that combo on, but I have definitely found that something which sits above the hip is best with them. My plan is to wear skinny polo-necks underneath (I got a lovely 70s lurex striped one from Warehouse and have a couple of plain ones too) and stick with the leather jacket for as long as possible, maybe layered up with a big blanket scarf.

Thank you! I have found that all my coats are too long really, and my parka doesn't look right at all. I have been coveting both a shorter biker jacket and a fur coat so I will have to try both. They are not tight on the legs, more a straight cut, which makes it difficult to pair it with coats as well.

If the coat hunt fails, I have seen them worn on pinterest with striped jumpers underneath with scarves. that may be another option. I just love them so much I want to be able to wear them through the winter!

Yup, for me it's about a (short) jumper under the dungarees

Layers. Cotton top or shirt and thin jersey under the dungarees and arran or similar boxy heavyweight cardigan over the top. Reckon my army surplus parka would work too. Once the rain starts my sense of style goes rapidly downhill - think deep sea fisherman

How about a khaki green utility jacket? Or you could layer up. Where long sleeved top underneath and nice thick oversized shirt on top?

Greengardenpixie · 02/10/2015 14:17

I am the same. I have the Toast denim ones and cord ones and they both look crap with longer coats on. I think the key is where the coat finishes. A shortish jacket is perhaps better. My dungarees are also slightly wide on the leg so you cant tuck them in. They look fine with a type of tennis shoe but everything else looks a bit crap!

flanjabelle · 02/10/2015 21:22

What about going the other way and going long? Would this work?

Which colour would be better? I was thinking the tan colour as a contrast against the black with a black long strapped bag and chunky scarf would work?

If I'm completely off the mark please tell me because I'm not very fashionable.

I have topshop black denim dungarees which I've loved wearing in the Sumner with t-shirts and blouses.
I'm currently wearing with slim fit merino jumpers underneath. You can pick these up in Gap or Uniqlo.
I'm thinking for winter, my khaki Parker will work.

All this is making me wish I looked good in dungarees! I just look like a transvestite builder.

flanjabelle · 03/10/2015 10:19

Hope have you tried black ones? I look fugly in normal blue denim ones, but black ones are fab.

try some capes and ponchos while you're at it.

Hopefully · 03/10/2015 16:47

Flanjabelle sadly I look even more awful in black. If someone would invent a lovely very dark mole/grey coloured pair, then perhaps I could make them work!

I am very keen to try a cape, OTOH. I suspect they will work well on me. Although not remotely well with my half-hour-school-run-plus-pram lifestyle.

IdentityRequest1 · 03/10/2015 19:09

A big wrap/open poncho?

I'm keen to try some dungarees... what sort of fit do you have on the legs, baggy or slim? What shoes do you wear?

blibblobblub · 07/10/2015 14:53

I have the black Primark full length dungarees (like a knock off of the Topshop ones!). I've found that a lightweight parka is fine (mine is from a supermarket children's section Blush I'm clearly all about high end clothes...)

Haven't tried it with my leather jacket though, will give that a go.

Any recs for super lightweight jumpers to wear underneath?
