Uniqlo ultra light down coats. Are they warm?

Am thinking of buying a long hooded uniqlo ultra light down coat, but am worried that it won't keep me warm in the depths of winter. Np but I really like the style of them. Anyone got one? Did it keep you warm in winter?

I'd say they are for an autumn chill rather than proper winter.
My sons have them.
I've had a similar weight coat on this morning when it was cold. Great as I can fold it up small. In winter I have a very thick coat - i feel the cold too easily.

Gillybobs · 29/09/2015 17:15

Definitely not, Not by a long way

Holymoly321 · 29/09/2015 17:33

Damn! I feared that may be the case! I'm really looking for a proper hardcore warm coat for winter that looks like the uniqlo ones. If it's waterproof even better! Any one got any tips?

Montane flux.
Or any other montane jacket. Super light and cosy - like wearing a warm cloud!

Holymoly321 · 29/09/2015 17:57

Thanks sunshine, but they only really do shirt jackets, am looking for something bit longer x

They're great for moderately nippy weather, but I wouldn't count on them for a real freeze. I took mine to Stockholm in November and it was perfect - I'm a permanently chilly person, too. In snow/rain/bitter blast-type conditions, I think you'd need something heavier, though.

Having said that, I do love mine. Actually I've just bought another one.

Holymoly321 · 29/09/2015 18:21

Moles op, I too am always cold. Is the coat waterproof or wind proof at all? Am so tempted just to get it because after searching online for a similar style coat, all the others look far too womany if that makes sense! I'm a converse and jeans girl! But I di like to be warm. Did you wear lots of layers u dear yours in Stockholm?

Sadly they're not waterproof (boo!) although I find they're quite effective in draughty conditions Grin. I wandered round in T-shirt, merino sweater and coat (erm, and jeans, obvs) - and felt toasty warm even on board boats and in the harbour. But it wasn't the depths of winter, just nippy-ish autumn.

Big plus for me is that these coats are so darn light, they're bliss to wear.

thisfalseinsight · 29/09/2015 20:34

I love love love these, but they're not proper winter coats. I have the short jacket and the gilet and I actually wear them under my wool coat when it's particularly cold - but definitely as an internal layer. I wear mine around the house, too, as I'm always cold, and it's more or less like a very warm (but light) jumper.

EldonAve · 29/09/2015 20:43

they are great but not windproof at all

Just bought this one - very lightweight, extremely warm, showerproof. Synthetic down, so can be easily washed without replumping feathers etc. really pleased with mine but not cheap...

Nearlyadoctor · 29/09/2015 21:16

It is longer than it looks - the back easily covers bottom to mid thigh, front is a couple of inches short and it looks very flattering on - not your typical Michelin man shape.

pinkfrocks · 30/09/2015 08:12

why not wait until they have their proper down coats in. They are thicker and mine is really warm, and for the price, around £80, was a bargain. I'm thinking of getting another one though TBH I only wear them when it's snowing or really freezing and a wool coat would get wet. Be aware of the colours as described online. Mine is 'brown' but everyone compliments me on the nice 'aubgergine' shade ' Hmm

Silverstreaks · 30/09/2015 08:28

I bought a slightly padded mandarin collared jacket from Primark a couple of weeks ago. It's synthetic, very thin, windproof and surprisingly warm given it weighs nothing at all!
I bought it to try out. I thought £15 was a good price before shelling out for a more expensive one. Mine is a warm light brown and they had black too. For the cold mornings it's perfect and would be great to put under another light coat if you want to bundle up.

niminypiminy · 30/09/2015 08:43

I have one and find it very windproof. If you size up then you can put layers underneath. The main downside is that they are really not waterproof at all. I'm looking at the 'water defender' ones which claim to be more waterproof.

Camembertie · 30/09/2015 09:04

I got a Uniqlo one and am quite disappointed tbh. I had a lands end down commuter coat that was calf length, vast and unflattering but I was never ever cold in it, even walking miles on school run in knee deep snow.

Uniqlo one is much more fitted and flattering but no way so warm.

Have you looked at Land's End?

FrustratedFrugal · 30/09/2015 16:05

I've had one of the shorter ultralight down jackets for a couple of years and it's cool summer days only. It's too cold already for one, I'm in the Far North. I have proper down jackets for winter.

FrustratedFrugal · 30/09/2015 16:24

Oh and it is not at all waterproof. Warmish dry days only i'm afraid. It's okay in wind but nothing like proper outdoor gear that is both waterproof and breathable.
