Decent cardigans

plum1304 · 27/09/2015 19:11

I need some decent cardigans in basic colours that will look decent and not go bobbly!! This shouldn't be hard should it?! Can anyone recommend any please?

Watching with interest. Not Matalan (unsurprisingly). I got a couple from Gap Outlet recently, only couple of weeks old so can't really comment on bobble potential.

Greengardenpixie · 27/09/2015 19:20

Woolovers?
Lots of styles and colours. Cant comment about quality but a few people have linked on here before.

Gap or Uniqlo. Good quality and lots of colours to choose from. Both wash well although ime Uniqlo knitwear holds its shape a bit better.

dun1urkin · 27/09/2015 19:23

I second woolovers - I've got two of the silk/cotton ones. They're lovely.

Care: washed in the machine on a delicate wash, occasional light depobbling with one of those jumper scraper things

dun1urkin · 27/09/2015 19:24

I don't think there is such a thing as magic non-bobbling knitwear, btw

Greengardenpixie · 27/09/2015 19:28

The bobbles are nothing to do with quality. its natural agreed.

plum1304 · 27/09/2015 19:44

Thanks for the recommendations, I know what you mean regarding that wool will bobble but I just think they look so scruffy and tired once this has happened!!

Lands End? I have some nice tops and cardigans from there in a cotton mix. Also agree with the Woolovers recommendation.

mimiasovitch · 27/09/2015 19:49

I had several of these last year. Not a lot of bobbling, warm with a nice sheen to the fabric. I need to buy more. The green this year is lovely.

Twinklestein · 27/09/2015 20:09

Uniqlo merino. Wears and washes well.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/09/2015 20:23

I like the H&M cotton ones. Here No bobbling at all and cheap as chips. Obvs not terribly warm though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/09/2015 20:47

I have a few from H&M (beige, sage,bottle green,navy)
About £10 , wash nice and good to layer (I really don't need warm Grin )

Woolovers are lovely quality.

I always intend to buy Uniqlo but when I see them IRL, I'm Hmm at the colours.
I have a Uniqlo cotton jumper ,cableknit, sort of greige.
Really love it .

In general: merino is less inclined to go bobbly & stays new looking. Cashmere will bobble - this seems to be true for my clothes, merino can look new for years

I bought 2 new merino cardis from Linea (house of fraser own label) on Friday - they were 55£ down to £39 (as they were having a % off, should still be on)

Lots of colours, flattering as ribs over the 'muffin top' area & can be crew neck or v if buttons undone

www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Linea+Women+Knitwear/BRAND_LINEA_303,default,sc.html

Could not see the discount here but hopefully they will have it again - often seem to, & may also be some v similar in their clearance section

Mrswinkler · 27/09/2015 20:56

**Pixie, bobbling or pilling if you want to get technical is to do with quality. The tighter the yarn is wound (denser, more expensive) the less chance of bobbling.

Mrswinkler · 27/09/2015 20:56

But can't offer advice on good cardies sorry.....

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/09/2015 20:58

I had no idea the H&M ones were cotton (the writing on the label is too teeny for my elderly eyes)

I wash in a bag at 30c (so the arms don't tangle and stretch)

JemimaMuddledUp · 27/09/2015 21:06

I bought a few of the ones from Next with the "Looks new for longer" labels. I think I've had the oldest of them for about 8 weeks and have worn and washed it every week and it still looks like new. They are only around £18 too so good value if they continue to hold up that well. Obviously at that price they are synthetic.

pdxs · 27/09/2015 21:08

agree bobbling is to do with the properties of the yarn, but its the tightness of the wool before it is knit that will make the difference... and the bobbles caused more by wear (arm brushing across body) than washing.

I do only wash my knits once or twice a season though (several at same time so its less tedious) ... handwash, roll in a towel to wring gently & dry flat... its worth it to me for a pricier wool item, less so for acrylic/cotton as cheaper & don't need as much care... and i am nearly always wearing them over a thin T so I think that is hygenic enough

Snoozebox · 27/09/2015 21:10

I want a really nice thick one for winter for putting over dresses. Any help?

TheFairyCaravan · 27/09/2015 21:12

I've got 3 or 4 cardigans from Matalan. None of them have bobbled.
Last year I bought I nice red and grey one from Next, they've lasted well.

ChippyMinton · 27/09/2015 21:27

Uniqlo or House of Fraser, machine washeable merino are unbeatable IMO, if you can find the right colour. I have two black ones and they get washed weekly with no ill-effect.

pdxs · 27/09/2015 21:33

Chippy - I may drop the handwash routine then! I have had machine washable merino from gap, uniqlo (I don't like fit of the cardis as much - baggy round waist - but great prices) & M+S in past - all lasted well

maitaimojito · 27/09/2015 21:36

I have three from H&M - l wear them quite a lot and none have gone bobbly (yet!).
