Moving on from Clinique?

Hello,

Not the world's biggest issue but I need to pick beauty brains.

I have used Clinique for years as I have periodically sensitive skin. It can be fine but if I am run down or sometimes for no reason I can pinpoint I develop sensitivities to make up. Generally Clinique is the one brand I can consistently use without a reaction no matter how am feeling

I typically wear eyeliner and mascara on a daily basis and occasionally foundation and a cream blusher and eye shadow (I can't wear any powder eyeshadow any more). I also use the foaming wash, purple liquid stuff and the moisturiser as mil very kindly buys it for Christmas.

So. Finally I get to the point! I recently discovered that Clinique still test on animals and I am not comfy with this at all. I honestly thought this was no longer ok anywhere. I feel a bit of an idiot actually.

So does anyone have a suggestion of what I could use instead? Similarly hypoallergenic and ideally available on the high-street.

Thanks!

This is difficult now as a number of big companies that were previously cruelty free have now resumed animal testing to be able to sell in China. Someone posted a link to a great blog listing cruelty free companies, I'll see if I can find it.

I use Bobbi brown they say they don't test on animals m.bobbibrown.co.uk/customer-service-faqs

I am now quite confused. Clinique say they don't test on animals or condone it. But they don't get to use the leaping bunny. I presume this is because they sell in China therefore do actually test on animals.

wonky do you have sensitive skin? Is bobby brown ok for this generally?
I know it can't be a guarantee but a general idea would be good

I've got sensitive skin and use Liz Earle cleanse and Polish, moisturiser and their tinted moisturiser. I've also tried some really nice camomile cleansing oil this week by body shop and my skin is super grateful! Both of these are good for getting all make up off including waterproof mascara. Not sure on the animal testing front for Laura Geller but they do fantastic baked cream foundation, bronzer and eyeshadow (crap mascara though)

Passmethecrisps · 26/09/2015 19:54

Thanks dolly. Sadly body shop is out after a fairly large reaction to mascara some years ago. I love it though. Boo

Bobbi Brown sell to China so they aren't ok. Liz Earle is a safe one. Some info here

I could try the cleansing stuff though. I am generally fine with cleansers and the like. It is eye make-up and nail polish which aides reactions.

Body shop is owned by Loreal so although they don't test, the parent company does.

Hmm. Just raided my bathroom cabinet. It appears lots of bunnies have suffered for my vanity.

Yeah it's really crap, so many companies that used to be ok now aren't. Hopefully China will change their rules. A few organisations are pressuring them to make a change.

Passmethecrisps · 26/09/2015 20:27

It is weird. I hadn't even thought to check for years.

I hadn't realised it would be so hard to find a suitable alternative. Given I have a fair amount left to use I will keep my eye out and maybe ask mil not to buy her annual bulk purchase just yet.

If I wasn't terribly insecure my skin behaved itself I would have plenty of options

I've been thinking about ditching Clinique for the same reason. I was going to look up alternatives on the Ethical Consumer website but have been lazy haven't got around to it yet.

beaucoupdemojo · 26/09/2015 20:42

Superdrug own brand don't test. Not quite Clinique in terms of branding, I grant you, but lots of people on MN rate their Vit E skincare and their GOSH cosmetics are okay. Might be a decent stop gap until you find another luxury brand that doesn't test.

Passmethecrisps · 26/09/2015 20:49

I had heard good things about super drug hot cloth cleanser so it might be worth a whirl. I will check boots as well for the mascara and eyeliner.

The luxury aspect is nice - freebies and such but I know that it isn't really free and lots of it goes unused anyway.

If I move to superdrug the mil will have more cash to spend elsewhere.

Yes I do have sensitive skin, I changed from Clinique to BB many years ago and have never had a problem with their products.

poocatcherchampion · 26/09/2015 21:16

Can someone explain the China thing? You have to test on animals to sell there?

The China thing is that you cannot sell products in China which haven't been tested on animals. So companies who ceased testing have now started again because they want a share of the market in China.

They tend to not advertise this new development when selling to European consumers though, who just remember them stopping testing years ago.

poocatcherchampion · 26/09/2015 21:47

Wowsers! Thanks beau

Twinklestein · 27/09/2015 08:26

I use Logona organic rose cleanser and moisturiser, with rosewater toner. And also Dr Hauschka and Neal's Yard. All cruelty free.

I used to use Clinique as a teen but their stuff is so strong and chemically and my skin is sensitive, I had reactions to it and gave up on them a long time ago.

beaucoupdemojo · 28/09/2015 09:39

There's a piece in the daily mail today(feel like I should say sorry Wink ), recommending vegetarian and vegan cosmetics and skincare ranges. It's online, so might be worth a look

thirtysomethingmum15 · 28/09/2015 11:46

I had no idea about this, until i read this thread! I honestly thought animal testing nearly a thing of the past... I have a tinted moistuiser by Laura mercer, which i love. How will I ever find an alternative as good??!!

thirtysomethingmum15 · 28/09/2015 11:47

Op... I have sensitive skin, prone to outbreaks. I use Dermalogica
