Barbour jacket - public service announcement

I bought a Barbour jacket off this website: www.in18tagen.com and I'm pretty sure it was a scam - jacket never arrived. I emailed Barbour to ask them to check it out and am appalled at my own stupidity and gullibility. When you look at the site there are so many signs.

ALSO I am horrified that I have given name, address, cc details etc to stinking scammers and have even name changed here in case they come across this post and try to exact revenge on me.

I am so cross AND I have spent £90 on a coat which I will never receive.

DO NOT USE this site.

oh no :(

if you paid by credit card I am pretty sure you can get your money back? not 100% sure but definitely worth giving them a call

what filthy scammers, I feel for you as I was duped too by someone selling something on facebook, a designer bag. i paid by paypal so i would be covered but they kept stringing me along until before I knew it the 28 days had passed for me to get my money back

it was about 100 quid too

I wanted to share on fb etc but was too embarrassed

really hope you get your money back x

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 22/09/2015 10:43

The site does look genuine, I agree. Have you tried contacting them, and/or the courier? Not sure what Barbour could do.

BarbourWindsor · 22/09/2015 10:45

I have tried contacting them - no response. I didn't think Barbour could do anything for me but they should be able to do something about the site - I'd want to, if it were my brand being bandied about.

I feel such a fool.

OP posts:
PUGaLUGS · 22/09/2015 10:52

How long ago did you order the jacket?

verenti · 22/09/2015 10:54

I think you can only get your money back from a credit card company if you have spent over £100.

BarbourWindsor · 22/09/2015 10:54

About ten days / 2 weeks ago so I know it is not impossible that it will arrive but in my heart I know I've been suckered.

If you look at the FAQ bit of the site it has obviously been inexpertly copied and pasted from other sites or previous scam sites - "you items will remain in your My H&M" for example, and "your information is safe at vintijblue.com" (when you go to vintijblue.com it's a Coach site).

I could THROTTLE myself.

Barbour are very aware of the large number of counterfeit sites. They will check a site's validity if you contact them and iirc there may be a facility to do the check on their website.

Sorry to hear this OP Flowers

BarbourWindsor · 22/09/2015 11:06

Yes, you're right, I saw that "counterfeit education" section on their website after I'd got the wool off my eyes, and I submitted the site for them to look at.

Oh OP Flowers for you x

However you paid, cc or debit, write to bank about it. They might be willing to reverse the transaction and wait for the seller to dispute it. If it's a scam it's unlikely they will dispute it. A friend of mine bought a counterfeit Ralph Lauren item and his bank refunded.

LazySusan11 · 24/09/2015 07:56

I had this happen to me a couple of months ago, they had copied a website of a place based in Bournemouth it was only when my credit card showed a Chinese transaction I became suspicious.

I contacted my credit card company they opened a dispute and after receiving my dispute in writing (email) I was fully refunded.

Hoppinggreen · 24/09/2015 09:37

Something similar happened to me, as soon as I ordered I realised it was a chineses scam site. I phoned my bank and they said that they could only help if the jacket didn't arrive. Unfortunately it did and it was very obviously fake.

IRuthBolirsUhbniuzsDH · 24/09/2015 09:41

Oh God I did the same with an Ergo carrier about 2-3 years ago when I was in a sleep deprived, newborn haze.

Could have kicked myself. My bank got the money back but I got some Chinese spam and demands to pay for a while after.

How did you pay for it?

IRuthBolirsUhbniuzsDH · 24/09/2015 09:43

By the way I paid by debit card, and didn't realise I had any protection - I realisd after about 5-10 minutes it was a scam, and rang the bank but they wouldn't cancel the payment.

However they told me how to get it back, and after some faffing about, I got it back. I had to get evidence from an independent third party that it was fake. Thankfully a very helpful person at Born was happy to write me a statement.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/09/2015 09:50

The URL is a bit of a giveaway.

OP - Have you stopped the card you used? The FAQs are clearly stolen and mention 128-bit encryption but there doesn't appear to be any, so you need to get that card cancelled and a new card with a different card number.

If something arrives, you can take it to Barbour and get a letter stating that it's fake. Your bank will then refund you and advise you to dispose of the item - do not post it anywhere.

If nothing arrives, which is more likely although not certain as the website seems to have a Chinese address and says they will use slow shipping, you need to start a charge-back with your credit card provider. They may fight it as the goods are under £100 and the website isn't very genuine-looking, but it's fairly easy to get them to settle in your favour, so cross that bridge if you come to it.

In the meantime, absolutely secure your credit card and any other details you gave. Your address is probably fine - it might get sold around a bit so you might see more spam - but you don't want to risk your card details.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 24/09/2015 09:52

They only bought that domain on the 16th September 2015, and it's registered as an individual not a business so there is no contact details (and no site security).

Where did you find the link?

BarbourWindsor · 25/09/2015 08:02

Hi and thanks for your replies.

I cancelled the card, wrote to the real Barbour to bring their attention to the site, and then the jacket did actually arrive, postmarked China (customs declaration "shoes". It's a fake, a nasty sheeny steel color, not even made up in the style I'd ordered. The coat itself is a mishmash of irregular seams, cheap material, weirdly proportioned pocket flaps, bright brassy buttons, jagged zip and so on, very obviously a rip-off, but the labels do look authentic, both the sewn-in one and the swing tag thing. I suppose it's easy to nick a load of them or have them made up.

Barbour wrote back and said they'd looked at the site and could confirm it wasn't authorized and they'd add it to their list and so on - so that's fair enough. They said I could show the email to the bank to recover the money.

The domain name is of course a dead giveaway as are the shitey FAQs and the lack of an https and all the other signs. I pride myself on being quite savvy so that's me larned well and good!

OP posts:
BarbourWindsor · 25/09/2015 08:04

Anchor that's weird about the domain being purchased on 16th Sept because I bought the coat about five days before that.

Nice work, you'll probably need to go in to your branch and give them all the documents and print outs and they will put it all together in a file and fax it over to their claims department.

Ring first to ask what you need; if you're with Natwest they were pretty good.
