Is there an age limit for over knee/thigh high boots?

MissTMornings · 18/09/2015 22:57

I had a fabulous pair of bright red suede thigh high boots in the 1980's.

I would love to get a nice flat pair in black suede but is this one of those trends that you should leave well alone if you remember the last time it was in?

I'm a black or grey skinnies and biker jacket type but I'm 43. I'm being ridiculous aren't I? I'm worried about looking the same age from the back as I do from the front iyswim.

Just no, at any age!

southeastastra · 18/09/2015 23:00

23 and a half

MrsMummyPig · 18/09/2015 23:01

It's a no from me too.

MissTMornings · 18/09/2015 23:06

Thought so Grin

Thanks

I think it depends on the overall look of the outfit and how tall you are. Some people can definitely pull it off, others look like puss in boots!!

Havalina1 · 18/09/2015 23:08

Totally depends on if you can pull the look off I think! Your silhouette and walk and length of leg I think decides it. I find the flat high boot look can be really impressive and can exude confidence - think it's the flat shoe part - it's brave - you need good legs and walk for it!

Russell & Bromley have those lovely Stuart wisemann ones I'm bagging a pair this winter (I turn 41 next week) - they look amazing on. Mind you they are just over the front of the knee but not at the back of the leg.

What height and size are you, if you don't mind me asking?

MotherOfFlagons · 18/09/2015 23:08

Oh. I must have not got that style bulletin. I have a pair of black suede over the knee flats and I wear them with a long sweater dress, opaques and I'm 43 too.

Alternative is leggings/skinny jeans and an oversize sweater. I've seen other women wearing this too so even if I was bothered about what people thought, it wouldn't be an unusual look. Definitely go baggy on top though rather than fitted.

mayum1 · 18/09/2015 23:26

Tall, knee-boots.

MissTMornings · 18/09/2015 23:39

Havalina I'm not very tall, 5'7" size 8-10 on the bottom but with 32HH norks so oversize jumpers are my friend anyway. I have long legs but not sure if I have got a good walk.
The Stuart Wisemann ones sound a lot like the ones I have been eyeing up.

mother I love the sound of the way you dress Grin

I don't usually care what other people think of my lack of style.

I coveted some from M&S but I got a good nights sleep and had a reality check.
In my mind I would be elegant and just a bit sexy in a Dandy Highwayman Rogueish manner.

In reality, with my cropped highlighted hair and Bitchy Resting Face, I'd look like Shirley Carter from Eastenders Blush

MotherOfFlagons · 18/09/2015 23:49

Yeeees? Grin

Seriously, wear whatever you want.

CointreauVersial · 19/09/2015 00:46

Well, I'm 48, and I have a fab pair of grey suede over-knee boots that I can't wait to dig out for the winter. They are flat, fit close to the leg, and I wear them with skinnies usually. I'm tall-ish and slim-ish, and think I look lovely in them. So there.

Thigh-high sounds a bit Pretty Woman, especially if they have heels.

MissTMornings

Im jealous of your rack!

Get the boots!

AHypnotistCollector · 19/09/2015 03:59

I have a pair of the stuart weitzman ones and can't wait to wear them again this winter. They are a fashion staple and once they're worn with the right outfit they look good at any age IMO.

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/09/2015 06:50

I have the R&B Weitzman ones with a block heel. I wore them lots last winter with skirts/dresses which covered the top of them.

I think they looked very chic.

I think flat suede ones look great with skinnies.

BrendaandEddie · 19/09/2015 06:53

i got some

felt a tit in them

AwkwardSquad · 19/09/2015 08:26

There was a gaggle of young women at the station the other morning, all with long hair, long legs, thigh boots and short dresses. Tops, actually, not dresses at all. I felt like my own grandmother.

HermioneWeasley · 19/09/2015 08:31

Unless you're doing panto, it's a no from me

HermioneWeasley · 19/09/2015 08:32

Or a dominatrix

Savagebeauty · 19/09/2015 08:33

I had them in the eighties when I was in my twenties. I would feel too theatrical in them now.
But I loved them . I am very tall with 35 inch legs and I felt great in them.

Branleuse · 19/09/2015 11:14

Youll look like something from Heart or Tpau.

Im trying to imagine who it might work on. Are you a full on goth? Maybe for a fancy dress party or for pole dancing?

LasAnya · 19/09/2015 11:18

I love them! Have been a convert for the past two winters.

I have flat ones in matte black leather and black suede. I'm late thirties and feel no shame Grin.

In my defence, I'm 5'11 and have good legs. Prosecuting evidence - I'm a bit of a tarty dresser in general, with Dominatrix tendencies Grin.

If you're going to go for them, just avoid the piratical ones with fringing, zips and/or a big front cuff and go for a riding boot style or the slim fitting, flat ones.

WhatamessIgotinto · 19/09/2015 11:36

BurningBriquette · 19/09/2015 11:43

I think they are a staple item -flat heel for me, in matt suede with no extras if tassels, garish zips or similar. Agree with posters above - you need to wear them with care and the 'right' outfit for you depending on your own look and what makes you feel stylish or happy. I go a bit bohemian and try to emulate Stevie Nicks hippie style (likely I fail miserably). With anything too tight, short or biker it may look too stylised ifyswim.

If it makes you feel good, and you feel comfortable or happy wearing it - then why not.
