I'm asking because at the grand of age of 37 I've never tried, and would like hints tips recommendations or warnings :0)

No. I epilate.

chanie44 · 18/09/2015 11:09

No, I'm sensitive down there and even when I get a salon wax it hurts and is delicate for a day afterwards.

Someone I know waxes at home and has no problems.

RachelZoe · 18/09/2015 11:17

Mine is all lasered but I always got waxed in a salon previously. I think it depends how far you're going, if you want a full brazillian/hollywood or are doing the under bit then don't do it at home, if you're just tidying up the sides then it's fine.

I would get a hot waxing kit though and do a patch test etc 24 hours before. Much better than cold waxing IMO/E.

DramaAlpaca · 18/09/2015 11:22

I used to, but now I epilate as it's less messy.

I recommend using hot wax, as a PP said. Also, take a couple of paracetamol beforehand and you need to be brave - hold the skin tight & rip the strips off quickly & firmly. If you get stuck Grin the wax washes off easily in the shower.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/09/2015 12:52

I do before I go on holiday and need to expose the old carcass.

I use a hot wax ( I tell myself it "opens the pores" which is probably rubbish Smile but I've never has much luck with cold wax)

Bodyscrub before, apply some talc.

I cut the strips a bit smaller, do a bit at a time.
Wax applied in the direction of hairgrowth, remove in the opposite direction.
Keep the skin tight and keep the strip as near paralllel to the skin, not 90 degrees.

I only do the edges not the Brazillian/full wax/landing strip effort.

Chicinwellies · 18/09/2015 14:08

Thanks. Seems ridiculous in the 21st century that I'm worried about a beautician waxing away down there - scenerios of them sat in the salon staff lounge having a chin wag about my bits, etc! Maybe I've thought and worried about it too much!!

My SIL does the full Hollywood herself using veet strips Confused she's been waxing forever though so maybe she has less/finer hair down there than the rest of us!

I get a beautician to come to my home and do a monthly wax. She uses hot wax for the underarms and hollywood. I bought a wax at home set (sorry can't remember what it's called) and I didn't have much success with it so stick with professional sessions at home now

sweetheart · 18/09/2015 14:44

Nope! I tried it once before a holiday - biggest mistake ever! I spread the wax, attached a strip and pulled - OUCH!!!! So bad I didn't get the strip all off in one go! I ended up a sticky mess and worst of all quite badly bruised my skin which looked great on holiday in a bikini!

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 18/09/2015 14:47

I'd definitely go to a salon for the first wax. It's better if someone who knows what they're doing does your first one.

If you're going in for a straightforward bikini wax, choose a salon where they do brazilians etc and comfort yourself with the thought that they often see women kneeling on the table with their faces down, bums in the air and their arseholes etc on display.

See - yours is v tame by comparison.Smile

WickedWax · 18/09/2015 14:53

I'm fully trained and do hollywood waxing all day long, I can do my own basic bikini but anything beyond that, I have to get someone to do it for me.

If you're going to try it, get a hot wax kit, the type where you peel the wax off once it's set, without using strips. Apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth and once it's set, get a good stretch on your skin, keep it nice and taut, and pull the wax off in the opposite direction to which you applied it. Make sure you pull parallel to your skin and not upwards, because otherwise you'll just snap the hair rather than removing it from the root.

Fwiw, I work from home so no salon chit chat about your bits on my coffee break, and tbh by the end of each day I've seen that many that I just wouldn't remember any individual one Grin.

Cheesybaps · 18/09/2015 15:02

I do - it all comes off with cold wax. I am trained though Smile

The biggest tips of all:

  • Make sure your skin is pulled as taut as possible, pull fast!
  • Applied in the direction of hair growth, pulled off opposite way
  • Do NOT keep going over the same area, you will damage the skin and bruise

I wouldn't recommend it if you have no experience whatsoever of waxing. Have you ever waxed yourself?

Generally, the bikini area grows down and inwards towards the middle, you would be applying strips down and pulling up. The undercarriage can be tricky as the hair can grow in different directions, and it's not always easy to see exactly where.

But for goodness sake don't do what my friend did...She waxed her own armpits for the first time and didn't realise that the hair there grows in all different directions. As the hairs weren't being pulled out (the strips were being applied in the wrong direction), she went over and over and over the same spot. She had to pull a sickie the following day when she had massive bruises, swelling and scabs under her arms and couldn't get her bra on!!!

I doubt you'll want to be waddling to work! Grin

Chicinwellies · 18/09/2015 20:50

Haha ok well (mostly) that has cheered me up, thank you very much ! I'll go down the professional route and take as many pain killers as legally safe before and possibly go in disguise as I am clearly a huge prude with attitudes of my grandparents lol

DO NOT EVEN CONTEMPLATE DOING THIS AT HOME. Seriously, some things are for professionals only. I have a friend who put herself in the minor injuries unit home bikini waxing.

Flumplet · 18/09/2015 20:56

I did it once. Never again. I thought I was going to die from the fanjo downwards. Worst pain I ever felt other than gallstones - I'll stick to my bic!

woodhill · 18/09/2015 21:01

I ended up with purple bruising so had to wear shorts bikini bottoms for a week, not recommended

Sloachie · 19/09/2015 11:01

I wax my bikini line all the time! Can't understand why others find it so painful. Half an hour and it done, no mess - use wax strips, cut them if necessary.

Sometimes i epilate there too, but it takes longer and can be a bit nippy!
I'd give it a try - maybe practice on legs first?

Etak15 · 19/09/2015 11:07

I tried once before going on hols yrs ago - ended with bruises! Used a razor ever since - mens razors are much better than women's Mach 3, although not the actual one that dh uses!!

Vixxfacee · 19/09/2015 11:17

I do a Hollywood at home.
Veet oriental and a glass of rum.

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 19/09/2015 14:53

I'm hoping that's to drink and not to rub on Vix
ouch stings

Fluffyears · 19/09/2015 16:06

Painkiller an hour before and go see the nice beautician lady. Honestly they are very matter of fact and professional and I got a Hollywood Shock. I tried it at home, had massive black bruises and still not as hair free as I'd have liked.

Paperblank · 20/09/2015 11:42

I epilate the edges just to tidy them up. I wax for holidays but the last wax I had just before I got married was bloody torture...I should have guessed that at 13 weeks pregnant it wouldn't be pleasant Confused

CakeForBreakfast · 20/09/2015 15:36

I do, using veet, I find the facial strips easiest. Hurts like buggery the first time and required extra plucking, but just like waxing anywhere else, the re growth is less tenacious so it all becomes easier.

I still giggle at the undignified positions I have to get into though!
