Contouring - has anyone tried it?

Youtube seems to be full of fairly extreme contouring videos. Has anyone tried these or are they only for the youthful and firm of skin?

Contouring under the cheekbones works on anyone when done subtly and with the right colour product.

Unfortunately not many people achieve this combo. Harsh stripes of orange is not a good look.

And I only contour the cheeks unless I'm doing drag makeup in which case it's cheeks, forehead, temples and nose!

thanks satan I can do that bit. It's the more extreme contouring with blue/yellow/green blended down. I think it sometimes gets called "clown contouring". I don't want to buy a kit if it's no good for middle-aged skin.

Yeah I wouldn't bother with that.

Remember that YouTube MUAs are constantly trying to come up with new trends and fads to get views and likes. Clown contouring is just the next one of those. In real life it would look obscenely OTT and unattractive.

TBH I don't truly understand why anyone would contour their whole face for the sake of it. If you have a wide nose then yep a subtle nose contour will take it look smaller. Same for a large forehead. But if you have well proportioned features then there's just no need.

Yeah, that's all for Instagram selfies on young girls who want to look like Kim Kardashian.

I'm not interested in the bronze look. I use a taupe blusher by Nyx. You can also check MAC for a subtle taupe shade.

NYX Taupe is my HG contour product. They've changed the formula so it's not as good anymore. I have one I'm using and two backups of the old one.

The NYX Wonder Pencil in Light is very similar and a cream formula so blends beautifully.

Illamasqua Heroine eyeshadow and Anastasia Beverley Hills Contour Powder in Fawn are both good non-orangey shades for pale skin.

I think it looks really good when indoors and highly lit but in the harsh natural light, not that good.

MamaLazarou · 19/09/2015 12:01

Nah. It's for people who like to wear a lot of make up, and who like it to be known that they have a lot of make up on.

Nothing wrong with these people, but I'm not one of them.

Getuhda348 · 19/09/2015 12:49

I do so I can hide my double chin and slim down my big nose... I swear I'm not completly ugly Grin sleek contouring pallete is fab and affordable if you are starting out. Have to be careful though hate seeing big stripes on faces but I think you can do it subtlety and not kim.k style if you start lightly.

SmugairleRoin · 19/09/2015 12:52

Yes, I do it a lot but with taupe rather than orange shades. I don't do it so much for daytime but contour/highlight is pretty essential for me on nights out - I have nice cheekbones and I like a bit of definition for them in pictures.

RachelZoe · 19/09/2015 13:49

Yes I do it every day. Not in that style though with the cream products and the real full on look. I use Charlotte Tilbury bronze and glow, it's powder and very light. You can do it subtly. The trick is to really blend it, on with one brush, then blend it in with a separate clean brush. A little contouring can go a long way. I don't like cream contouring products, they always seem to be far too dark/orange on me.
