To not want to wear tailored trousers

mostly because I don't really know what they are
I have just started work at a new school. It has been taken over by an academy and they have big plans. One of the shake ups is uniform, which also reflects on staff dress code. I've worked in a number of schools which have ranged from no dress code to smart casual etc and I've always been fine but this place is proper suited and booted and I don't know what to wear!!
Shirt with bow, pencil skirt and black blazer taken from funeral/interview dress but every morning I get stressed thinking I'll get pulled up on it.
I'm a baggy jeans and holey cardigan kind of girl so don't mind getting dressed up but I have no idea what to wear.
I'm a 12, 5ft 4, dark blond, fair skin, 36yo...
Anyone want to dress me?
Ps more likely to shop in Sainsburys than river island if you get me, but send me any ideas, I'm hopeless!
Not a fan of trousers for work unless baggy and flowery but willing to experiment - absolutely nothing skinny or cropped allowed.
How did I get to this age and not know how to do business dress? I want some creative, individual side, I wore my chakra necklace under my blouse today Blush

Really, S&B is a better place to ask this question, you'll find the experts hanging out there.

and this is not a AIBU

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 15/09/2015 19:59

Sainsburys do some great tailored workwear, especially patterned shirts /blouses! Reasonably priced too and wash well! Go for some tailored trousers, maybe a matching suit jacket and a variety of shirts. Hth!

PastaPrincess · 15/09/2015 20:03

I have to dress formally in my job and always wear dresses as it saves faffing around with separates. M&S and Next do some really nice tailored dresses, chuck on a suit jacket or smart blazer and you're ready to go. I've also bought a few work dresses from Sainsburys. I think Gok's new collection may have a few but I haven't had a chance to look properly yet.

See don't know where to even post, you're right, I started off aibu then got carried away, sorry!

I work in a school with a similar dress code. I just wear Asda/tesco. Trousers and jacket. I normally wear a shell top (hate blouses) with ankle boots. Job done. Or a smart dress with boots

SaucyJack · 15/09/2015 20:41

What about this?

It might be a bit casual for work (?) , but it looks very nice hanging up in our local shop and is exactly what I'd wear if I ever grew up and stopped dressing like a grungy tramp.

wowfudge · 15/09/2015 20:45

No - that's fab with opaque tights, smart shoes and a tailored jacket.

Wide leg linen trousers are my friends. I have about 8 pairs. They look smart and can be dressed up or down.

Sidalee7 · 15/09/2015 21:12

Black dresses are my go to outfit for business dress, you can accessorise with nice jewellery and it always looks smart.

I find Zara basics good for affordable workwear, they do great Jersey pencil skirts, nice with a floaty black or cream top.

peacefuleasyfeeling · 15/09/2015 21:24

Since my school got similar ideas, I have worshipped at the altar of the shift dress. Smart and chic, teamed with a little jacket or small cardigan. I wear opaque-ish tights and sensible ballerinas. And I salute your chakra necklace subversion; I did the same last week with a beautiful goddess pendant with big boobies Grin

Fluffyears · 15/09/2015 21:33

Erm no I wear it often (my tummy looks bad in pic but not in rl, I think it's the lighting in debenhams). I thought it was nice Sad

ihatethecold · 15/09/2015 21:38

Fluffyears · 15/09/2015 21:39

Thanks Ihate (was going to wear it tomorrow but might rethink now Blush)

I teach and am on SLT so I tend to make a bit of an effort even though we don't have a dress code. My work wardrobe is mainly navy/ white/ charcoal/ cream. Then I add other colours through scarves, shoes, perhaps a shirt.

It isn't very exciting, but does always look pulled together. I can get a dress or top/ skirt out and there'll be a jacket to go with it.

Sainsburys have a good set of basics, M&S are sometimes ok for a blazer or jacket. TK Maxx have some statement pieces.

Also I always wear make up- at least mascara and lipstick- usually a foundation and highlighter too. Finally perfume- everyday. It is a signature scent, it tells me I'm ready to go!

FWIW, I throw it all on in about 25 mins including a shower. I have a dog and DS that need my time in the morning!

Purplepoodle · 15/09/2015 21:44

I brought these from tesco last week. I'm only 5'5 so bit longer on me than on photos. I wear them with some smart ballet pumps and usually leggings but probably not smart enough

orlakielyimnot · 15/09/2015 21:51

Ignore that poster fluffy, s/he needs to get a hobby. You've got a great dress there!

Fluffyears · 15/09/2015 21:54
